My first encounter w/RC was in an interview he did in The Wittenburg Door. Seems like a million years ago.
But then we discovered him in earnest on his radio program, 1997~1998. His “Chosen By God” series changed our lives.

I fully agree with all of that Dr. Sproul has said. IMHO partial preterism is the best and most honest explanation of the text of the olivete discourse.

“Let the reader understand,” is not mysterious. He meant it for everyone and knew his words would reach everyone.
Electric Boogie, the phrase “let the reader understand” was not spoken by Jesus but later added by Matthew, and since this was written down some decades after Jesus spoke these words, it shows that his great tribulation prophesies and warnings were still in the future.
Matthew basically sandwiched this guidance inside of Jesus’ warning: _When you see the sign_ (Matt: let whoever reads this understand) _then let those in Judea flee to the hills_ … because that’s followed by the great tribulation.
@@electricboogie709, I got the idea from red-letter Bibles, but I just looked at commentaries about this, and several made a case for Jesus having said it, referring to Daniel's prophesy. That makes more sense. I've changed my mind and now believe you're correct. Thank you.

Love his analysis. I just recently discovered Dr Sproul, and was saddened to hear of his passing. I am now seeking out more of his works. In the context of this lecture, I’m convinced he misunderstands the time frame and context. The term ‘this generation’ has to refer to the last generation when the tribulation begins at the end of history. On another matter, Jesus said that the destruction of the temple would be complete and that ‘no stone of the temple would be left standing on another stone’. The wailing wall belies His statement and as such proves that the wailing wall was not part of the temple, but was in fact part of the fort of Antonia. Additionally, the fact that the Lord has not appeared with his angels to gather His elect, nor has the new city of Jerusalem, Gods holy city, come down from heaven also proves this event is yet to happen. These events give credence to the fact that ‘this generation’, of which He speaks has to be the generation at the end of history.
Dr John. How do you know that the Lord did not appear with His angels? And how do you know that the Holy City has not come down? It all depends on how you interpret what His appearing was and how it happened, as well as what the composition of the Holy City actually is.
If you believe that the city must be an actual physical city, but at the same time you believe that Jesus' coming vanquishes all evil and disposes of all evil, then you also have to deal with Rev. 22 that describes as still existing outside the gates.
These are issues that must be answered, because they will color your interpretations of whether or not Jesus has returned and whether the Kingdom of God has appeared.
@@moodberry well, if that event had already happened then everyone would know it as the thousand years of His reign on the earth requires all nations to come to the city each year to worship the Lord.there is no evidence in our history of that happening.

@@moodberry you are mixing this up with something entirely different. This scripture is referring to those who have accepted Christ.they will be allowed into the city. But those who do not accept Christ remain outside ready to be judged.
This definitely points out the immeadiate value of Jesus" words. Doesn't stop the later application though
Unfortunately it does. We cannot have our eschatological bread buttered on both sides. If we try to give the Lord's words some future interpretation as well we would not be honouring what the word of God actually says.

@@dylancromhout you are correct. The very principle of ' study of last things ' makes multiple ' applications ' unreasonable. If prophetic statements have multiple applications ( and I think they mean multiple fulfillments, in reality ) it totally negates last things....there will be no last days to a person who believes in multiple applications. In other words, the end never comes -- the last days are not realized.

Were the disciples able to understand the nuances in the Olivet Discourse about which things to be understood literally (i.e. fulfilled imminently--70AD), and which things would be fulfilled much later?

Confirmed but not fulfilled. If you go back to your OT, one of the verifications that you were a true prophet of God, was that if you were prophesying some far future event, you were also to prophecy an event that occurred in the life time of the audience. 70AD does not fulfill all the predicted events. This is made obvious because 25-26 yrs later, John writes of the same things with further detail, being yet future.
@@leefury7 John wrote Revelation and you can see the urgency all throughout. The time is “at hand”, “shortly to take place”, “coming quickly” etc… he wrote it in 63-67 AD. In that same generation. Seems like perfect harmony if we let the text speak.
@@Jus4kiks No. It was written from Patmos in the '90's long after the destruction of Jerusalem. Don't know where you get the early date from. You should keep up with the latest biblical archeology.
@@leefury7 Completely disagree. From my looking into it, I didn't see much merit in the later date of Revelation. 'When Jerusalem Fell' was a book I referenced when looking into the earlier date and then the obvious abundance of textual evidence in the Bible.
@@Jus4kiks As I said, you are not current with archeological findings. Also, the Ephesians history needs to be taken into account which was also after 70AD. Then there is Domitian. John was there during his rule which was 81-96. There are so many factors that place exiled John on the island long after 70AD that to maintain an earlier date is nothing short of eisegetical presumptiveness.

And the Book of Revelation is proof that one of the disciples did live to see the Son Of Man coming in the clouds, and he recorded it for us
When Christ said the Gospel must first needs preached to the Nations.He was talking of the 12 tribes this is why he told the disciples to remain in Israel Preaching for 3 plus years..Far as the final end to come there is no signs,,,But there were signs pointing to AD70,,,This generation meant THAT GENERATION,,,YOU DONT DO ANYTHING WITH IT TAKE IT FOR WHAT IT SAYS
JESUS SAVES, in Matt 24:34, Jesus used the Greek particle _an_ G302 with verbs in the Subjective mood, which indicates supposition, wish or possibility. That means he did not say that generation _shall_ not pass away before these things are fulfilled. He said that generation _might_ not pass away before these things are fulfilled.
And in Matt 10:23, Jesus used the same particle and mood, so what he said there was that they _might_ not have completed the cities of Israel until the Son of man comes, or that he wished they might not have completed the cities.
And in Matt 16:27, Jesus used the same particle and mood, so what he said there was that some standing there might not die before they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
Consider the following passages to get the complete picture:
Matthew 24:3
Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
Mark 13:4
Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?”
Luke 21:7
So they asked Him, saying, “Teacher, but when will these things be? And what sign will there be when these things are about to take place?”
Four questions Jesus answered
• When will these things be?
• What will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled/about to take place?
• What is the sign of your coming?
• What is the sign of the end of the age?
It was more than just when and what sign.

I disagree that Jesus included his coming in "all these things". Yes he previously mentioned in summary of events his coming, however, he states in the fig tree illustration that he is only "near at the door" when they see "all these things" occur. Leaving out his coming is in line with the clear statement that he did not know the timing of his coming. Only that "all these things" refer to the immediate fulfillment of that generations judgement as he just clearly stated in chapter 23 of Matthew. He was answering the first part of their question regarding "when" "all these things" would befall Jerusalem and the temple. The disciples question is not one but two questions. When will all these things occur AND what is the sign of Your parousia and end of the age? He answers it in two parts.

Where do you get the idea of this "end of history/end of time"?🤔
If you read all the way to the end of Revelation, AFTER the beast, false prophet and the devil who deceived them were cast into lake of fire, and AFTER the New Jerusalem came down from Heaven and was setup on New Earth - we get this depiction of the life on that new earth and the things that exist within the city, i.e. "the tree that bears fruit EVERY MONTH...", "a gate that is never shut during DAY OR NIGHT"...So obviously, it's clear that TIME is still continuing and being measured! 😉
I know mr Sproul has passed, so this question is open for anyone to answer.
At the time of each or our deaths
It isn't & shouldn't be just "One" Sign, but rather a "Few" Signs; but most important " of a line-ment of the Stars in the Month of "February of the "First "Two weeks "Only"..........! A standard "Star-Chart" & the Bible explains all......!
It's good that mention was made about "no stone will remain standing on another ..."
The more important prophecy and sign that matters is
regarding His Resurrection referred below:
Mathew 12:39- 40 > But He answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
But, it's amazing how preachers skip over the anomaly of Friday crucifixion and Sunday resurrection when Scripture clearly reveals otherwise and prophecy demands fulfillment.
How is it possible that after a Friday crucifixion and burial before sundown on that day (which marks the beginning of the Jew's weekly Sabbath) then enables the women to buy the spices when shops are closed and then prepare the spices and rest for the weekly Sabbath etc.
The right explanation for events concerning His death , burial and resurrection should be on the following lines:
14th day of Nisan was the Passover. From evening after 6.00 PM till 6.00 PM next day is the order of Day from the beginning in Genesis.
Thus on the day following the Passover was the 15th day of Nisan which was a "High" Sabbath .
John 19:31 > The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an "high day" being the Feast of the Unleavened Bread) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away (because they had to bury Him before 6.00 PM as on High Sabbath day no servile work permissible as commanded in Leviticus.)
Leviticus 23:5-7 > In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD's passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
On the following day after the 15th day of Nisan from
evening 6.00 PM to 6.00 PM is normal day when shops are open and people can buy things - which is when the women bought the spices and prepared them.
Then again on 16th day of Nisan, from 6.00 PM till next day 6.00 PM
was the Weekly Sabbath and no work could be undertaken and thereafter it's too dark for the women to go to the tomb.
Thus early on the first day of the week they reach the tomb and are told by the angel that He has risen.
Thus Jesus was in the grave for 3 days and 3 nights. Exactly as He had said would be the sign in Mathew 12:39-40.
Passover Day to Resurrection Day is 3 days and 3 nights.
Preachers who advocate the Friday to Sunday (one and half day timeline) should preach a different Messiah who will come to fulfill Jesus's prophecy in Mathew 12:39-40.
It's disconcerting that preachers will focus on Micah 5 and Bethlehem, and Isaiah 53 etc from Old Testament at length to establish that Jesus indeed is the Messiah but conveniently ignore Mathew 12:39-40 and still continue without missing a heartbeat.
Else they should tell the Truth according to the Scriptures.

In the days of Jesus, does GENERATION refer to 40 years? Or the 40 years generation was coined recently?
Based on his explanations in other sermons, the term “this generation” meant within 40 years to those people he was speaking to then. Jesus says “this generation will not pass away”, as well as “some of you will not taste death until…” when he was speaking to the men around him.
What did Dr sprout die from and what yr
Wish there were a "how to" avoid Hal Lindsey, Darby, Joël Osteen, Creflo, Joyce... & their ilk of spawns from hell. But then, it is written that "deceivers must come"...

I do believe Hal Lindsey was truly trying to understand the Word in an attempt to better know His Savior and just because someone thinks differently I don't think is a good reason to give Christianity a bad name with the name calling divisiveness and unloving not just your neighbor but a whole group of people you consider to be lost? Live peaceably wherever it is able and love your neighbor as yourself is what we need more of in this world. Become the example!

Could the preterist be in danger of missing a second coming?
What we believe or do'n't believe will not change God's plans for His return for His Church. A born again believer is saved. Having differing views on end times doesn't change that either. Whether He came back already in 70 AD which is what a full preterist believes, or whether He is coming in the future doesn't change the fact that we will be with Him for eternity at some point, and we may never figure out before it happens.

Bill Hesford, as the saying goes “there are no atheists in foxholes,” there will likewise be no Preterists in the great tribulation.
@Jeremiah Lawson, thanks to Josephus’ detailed account of the first century First Jewish-Roman War, we can be certain that the prophesies about the Antichrist/Beast did not take place, Daniel 9:27 did not take place, and the terrible events described in the 7 Trumpets and 7 Bowls and Second Coming and Armageddon did not take place.
@Jeremiah Lawson, I studied the prophesies for myself and found an amazing sort of tapestry that’s woven thru all literary genres to tell a consistent story. I later found the preterist approach, and to be frank it’s the most selective thing I’ve ever seen and mars the tapestry beyond recognition. I would sum up how that system deals with prophesy with the phrase: ‘It’s not what it looks like.’
So you have Matthew 24, Mark 13, and Luke 21. Very interesting that John to whom is given the Revelation of Jesus Christ wrote nothing in his gospel about what is being spoken of here. Curious.
You need to read Revelation again sister; it’s very much about the Olivet Discourse ❤️🙏🏽 (not our own future, although there will always be lessons to learn)

Why will Jesus says "nation against nations, earth quakes, famine, kingdom against kingdom" if He only meant Jerusalem? Critical thinking says He meant the world because HE did not only come for the Jews but He said He came for the world:)
Yes he was speaking to the Jews firstly. However this is also meant for the whole world due to the prophecy by Paul for the Gentiles. So yes Jew first Gentile second. No one is excluded.
I definitely recommend listening to the entire teaching series on escatology in context before reaching any final conclusion however throughout R. C's time in this earth he was not opposed to a further fulfilment of the coming of Christ. It's a good idea to listen to his expository and theological teachings on the Gospels. Much blessing.
Didn't Jesus tell Christians to pray for God's Kingdom to come and for His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven? God's Kingdom is a heavenly government ruled by Jesus Christ as King. Soon Jesus will bring beautiful changes to the earth. There will be no more death, pain or sorrow on earth, Revelation 21:4,5. No more wickedness on earth, Psalms 37:9-11. After Armageddon the meek will inherit the earth and live forever on it, Psalms 37:29; Matthew 5:5; Proverbs 2:21,22. The earth will be cultivated into a Paradise like God intended in the beginning, Genesis 1:28; Isaiah 55:11. Jesus will do on a grand scale what he did when he walked the earth including raising those who are asleep in death, John 5:28,29. There will only be one government ruling over mankind forever, Daniel 2:44. Jesus said that this good news of the Kingdom would be preached about in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come! In order to receive everlasting life and the blessings that God has promised, we must worship the Father with spirit and truth, John 4:22-24; John 17:3; Isaiah 42:8! Will you? These are the last day's to worship God in spirit and truth! Our lives depend on that!

I see what you are saying, but I think RC was making a distinction between His judgement that was coming to the Jewish people verses His second coming. I guess we have to watch the follow up video?
Escatology was not his Forte, but nevertheless his position must be respected.
Another important point is that particular verse that he kinda jumped over that is key in reality:
“Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” *(whoever reads, let him understand),*
Matthew 24:15 NKJV
Jesus knew about the upcoming writing of the Bible (New Testament) but the hearers did not therefore "whoever reads" had no relevance to them but to the actual *readers* of this particular prophecy.
Like I said in other occasions, we will never know for sure fully accurately the escatologycal part of the Bible untill The Day that we'll see Jesus in His Glory. We must work out our salvation in humbleness and joy untill then and not enter into an interpretational war between us.

Doctrinal Watchdog......oh yes, He did. He came in judgement of Old Covenant Israel. That is not what people think of as His final coming .
I think you suffer from a single method of viewing information: hyper literalism.
Matthew was a disciple, whereas Mark & Luke were not. They were apostles after Jesus’s ascension. Mark was Peter’s scribe. But Luke was Paul’s disciple & never met Jesus in real life. So I tend to give more credence to Matthew since he lived and walked and talked with Jesus from almost the beginning of His ministry. Although Mark, being Peter’s scribe, was around for some of it too. And Luke was just a great and thorough historian.
On that basis, you’d give little credence to the human author of most of the NT because he became a believer after Jesus ascended.
I don't think you understand the implications of what you are saying. 1) you're assuming that there isn't a harmony of doctrine between the gospels. 2) you're denying the inspiration of ALL scripture, hence the sovereignty of God in the authorship and inerrancy of His word.
RC It isn't hard to understand bible prophecy. Unfortunately , you made it hard. The bible says what it means, and means what it says. Why would Jesus say in Rev.1:3, that those who read and study the words of this book would be blessed, if we weren't able to understand it?
