  • This famous recording is already available on TH-cam, but it was never edited properly. The constant distortion always desperated, at least, me, and i suspect many others too. This version is finally without the imminent distortion, which should make it much more listenable than before.

    Как жаль, что сейчас не услышишь таких голосов...Их нет, от слова-совсем...А Марио Дель Монако здесь не то, что проконсул - абсолютный император!!! Его голос, жесты-всё крышесносно! Если Марио на сцене, смотрю только на него, хотя главная героиня здесь- Норма. Магия великого Марио Дель Монако!

      Уважаемая Ирина, а меня больше поразила в этой постановке Elinor Ross. Я ещё не слышал такой Нормы! А вот Марио Дель Монако какой-то холодный, каменный, особенно в последней сцене. Явно артистизма не хватило, как в "ПАЯЦЫ", например.
      Про голос, молчу. Очень хорош в этой постановке Massimiliano Malaspina.
      Я слушал как-то "Норму" в Ковент-Гарден, где Pollione пел Джозеф Каллея вместе с Соней Йончевой. Голоса конечно хуже, НО!... какой артистизм! В последней сцене у меня, мужика, ком в горле и слёзы на глазах. Здесь я этого не почувствовал.
      "Норма", моя самая любимая опера и с интересом, с надеждой услышать самую шедевральную постановку слушаю оперу с любым составом. Всегда наслаждаюсь музыкой Беллини!

Ведь он влюблён в Adalgisa, а Норма была ему препятствием..Да, конечно, Поллион оценил её самопожертвование-ну ведь мужчины...Ну это так..отступление.Я ,думаю, Марио здесь был очень сосредоточен на вокальной стороне сложнейших арий, ведь не так много времени ещё прошло с момента аварии, в которую он попал и нужно доказывать, что Дель Монако - по прежнему Дель Монако! А что касается вокала, то он бесподобен у всех! Norma, Adalgisa, Flavio, Oroveso-все бесподобны! Но Марио, для меня, просто-недосягаемый космос!

      Ирина, возможно Вы правы, но сама МУЗЫКА композитора в финале
      говорит, даже кричит о человеческой драме. Поллион осознал, вдруг, что любит Норму, мать их детей, а Адальжиза была только увлечением. Ну, как здесь можно быть холодным?! Они в последний раз видят своих детей и идут на костёр вместе.((
      Ещё раз повторюсь, к голосам у меня нет претензий, только к актёрской работе. Может быть постановщик этой оперы не донёс такие детали до певцов.
      Например, Норма в последний момент сообщает своему отцу, что она МАТЬ, но реакции отца, Оровезо мы не видим, а она должна быть.
      Жалко, что финальной сцены не нашёл, но послушайте дуэт Нормы и Поллиона(Йончева-Каллея) и оцените АРТИСТИЗМ певцов. А финал ещё сильнее!

      @@levpetrenkov Лев, но эта мизансцена ужасна...(режиссёрские фокусы).Проконсул Рима с окровавленной физиономией, которого пинает любящая его жрица??Жалкое и неубедительное зрелище...По либретто, в этой мизансцене Норма предлагает спасение Поллиону, если он откажется от Альджазиры, но Поллион предпочитает смерть! И как убедительно и очень артистично эта сцена выглядит в исполнении Дель Монако и Росс! Я не буду хвастать, если скажу, что очень хорошо знаю творчество Марио дель Монако и уж кого, кого, но только не Дель Монако можно обвинить в слабой актерской игре.. Он не только фантастический певец, но и ПРЕКРАСНЫЙ АКТЁР! А уж роль Поллиона-это его "боевой конь", которую он стабильно исполнял с начала 50-х годов.. Считаю его Поллиона - лучшим и непревзойденным до сих пор!!!

      Artiglieria pesante...secondo me non era umano...assolutamente inimitabile, unico per timbro, armonici, potenza, capacità di cantare sul fiato senza pari, acuti metallici e tonanti.

    I don't really care this excellent mezzo gets lost in part of the duet: a young unknown singer that almost outsings Del Monaco can do more than that and still deserve an ovation. Can you think of any mezzo nowadays that could do the half this one does, even among the most well-known ones? You're lucky if you get to hear them from the upstairs levels of the theatre.

    Mi sono piaciute molto le voci dal timbro scuro del soprano e del mezzosoprano, capaci entrambe di intensi affondi contraltici come di acuti elevati ed potenti. Del Monaco immenso Pollione a ben 52 anni, con la sua voce voluminosa dal bellissimo timbro baritonale intatta e sempre potentissima. 💔👏👏👏💯

    Sin duda alguna el más grande Pollione de la Historia...no es que vamos a botar por la ventana a Corelli...o a Caruso....pero la diferencia aquí la crea lo que Franco Corelli....decía sobre Mario del Monaco....Mario poseía en su voz, trazos heroicos...frase.explosivas vocalmente, vulcanicas...y notas singulares....de enorme vibración al Teatro...que causaban un efecto en el publico, maravilloso....si vedaba que Mario esas notas las había ''trabajado''....'' ci aveva laborato proprio'' .....un gran estudioso...vivía para mejorar su instrumento !!!! o sea la cosa no era simple....!!!!

    It has been told to me that Del Monaco's singing suffered or was lacking after the 1963 as a result of his " incidente stradale" in 1963, however there is absolutely no evidence of that here in this recording, several years after that unfortunate event. He sounds as strong as ever.

      December 1963, MDM was in an almost fatal car accident, where all his ribs were broken, his pelvis and kidneys were severely damaged, having to be on kidney dialysis treatments, ''which are very tiring'', a few times a week until he passed. Around 1962 to 1963 he was experimenting with a higher brighter sound that is evidenced on his Montovani LP as well as his Lamento Di Federico here on YT where he sings the entire aria mostly in mezza voce. He returned to the stage in an Otello performance late in 1964 with is original production or technique. Even though his voice never returned to what it once was in the 1950s, it was still a most formidable voice compared to anyone who was around including Corelli. MDM was a master of his complicated technique and committed his life to the art form of opera.

    Even at 52 years of age and singing since his debut 1940 as pinkerton its amazing how well he still sounds and saying that he is far from his best here, that said id take him over any other tenor singing this role today

    Ross was such a good singer and a good, if not a great, Norma. The voice is huge, luscious, and reasonably agile. What I miss in her performance is the play or light and shadow, and a lot of the singing seems unremittingly loud. I find her acting quite excellent and a perfect fit for this music. It's so tragic that Bell's Palsy ended her career.

    Thanks for a cleaned up version of this classic. I would hate to endure the less listenable posting you mention in your comment as this one, though listenable, has some distortion. Your effort in posting this is rewarding however, to be able to not only hear but also see this performance is wonderful indeed. It's rare to have a watchable pre-'70's Opera to enjoy and the quality of this one is surprising. L516C79V18594/:-)

      Reply to Remo Mazzetti: It is not a perfect performance. No performance is ever perfect. Also, the recording of this performance would be considered to be primitive by today's standards. Elinor Ross, a relative unknown, was substituted at the last minute and she gave the performance of her life, I think. As I noted before, if it had been me, I would have left in the ,,coda" in 'the Pollione Adalgisa Duet. But one cannot deny, I don't think that it is probably the best performance ever, particularly for del Monaco and Vighi. One has to pierce the veil of the cuts and transpositions of every performance, not only this one, in order to hear the essence of what it sounds like. I think that is true of all recorded performances. Even when one attends a live performance, different people hear different things and probably that is a good thing.

    Ho guardato ed ascoltato questa eccezionale edizione. Bravissimi tutti gli interpreti. Alcuni non li conoscevo, ma sono stati meravigliosi. Un appunto al grande MDM che in questa recita ho trovato scenicamente troppo statico, troppo statuario, non cambia posa. Ovviamente è il mio parere.

      Es cierto, pero resulta sorprendente la potencia tan constante y duradera que pudo conseguir con esa pequeña respiración. Mario debería ser referente de la capacidad vocal humana.

    This is great! Many thanks!! While Mario Del Monaco is solid as always, this exceptional performance is dominated by Elinor Marilyn Rosenthal who was extremely underrated and suffered from unfortunate tragedy.

    Was this performance in Venice or Berlin? Sources say she sang Norma with this cast in Venice at La Fenice, but other sources say this is a German video. I can't find anything definitive. Can anyone cite a definitive source?

    Very good quality film of this famous performance of NORMA, Berlin January 1967.
    The Oroveso scene which begins the final sequence is missing but it is a minor peeve.
    Good mezzo, even if she gets lost during the second duet cabaletta.
    Mario del Monaco? Yes ok he still has a stentorian voice and prolongs every high or strong note he can but one hears the reduced vocal volume compared to the mid-50s, and of course he offers virtually nil characterisation.
    Now, Elinor Ross is indeed admirable in this famously impossible title role. Her stamina is impressive, her fortissimo high Cs glass-shattering and there are some beautifully spun passages (Son io ...), although she leaves a lot to be desired where delicate, subtle singing is needed, and her trills are nonexistent.
    But her stage presence is very pedestrian with exaggerated gestures and too many rolled Rrrrs.
    A spurned housewife she may be; a divine Druid priestess she is not.
    Best filmed live Norma? Montserrat Caballé at Orange, 20 July 1974.
    Best recorded live Norma? Callas on the opening night of La Scala, 7 December 1955. Sublime...

      MDM'S reduced vocal volume? He's 52 years old here and the voice was still very formidable during the years after his 1963 almost fatal car accident, which required him to be on kidney dialysis 2 to 3 times a week until he passed. In 1950, MDM was 35 years old. In spite of some criticism that may have come his way, MDM still had a 35 year career and was revered by many of his peers, including Bergonzi, Corelli, Di Stefano, Tebaldi, Hines, Baum, Tucker and Lauri Volpi, Tucci Protti and Domingo to name a few. His is a voice that had to be heard in the theater to be fully appreciated. For some interesting reading, you may take a look at 'Naamloos document - Opera Nostalgia'' Looking back on Mario Del Monaco by David Akins where he mentions that Bjorling and MDM were his favorite tenors, but also writes about other singers as well.       @@sugarbist …indeed there is a lot of knowledge missing among those who criticize MDM. A BIG voice over the entire dynamic range, overwhelming stage presence. A unique artist. He still has no successor in his league. More or less mediocrity reigns supreme. Mostly less. RDS

      @@mk5244 Let us also take into consideration that after MDM's almost fatal car accident in Dec.1963, where he broke all his ribs, fractured his pelvis and damaged his kidneys, he remained on the tiring Kidney Dialysis treatments 2 to 3 times a week until he passed. I don't believe that any tenor before or after MDM ever had the option to sing the way Del Monaco sang. He also had a great 35 year career.

      ....a voice like MDM remains big over the whole dynamic range. I would be delighted to hear a tenor of todays generation - only a single evening- at a dynamic range MDM had for decades...however mediocrity reigns supreme.

      @@sugarbist credo che riusciva ad eseguire i colori nella voce meglio di chiunque altro tenore,anche se la sua mezza voce non era inferiore a nessuno,benché la usasse poco...tuttavia i colori che emetteva erano straordinari in teatro !!! Saluti

      @@giampierone010 Corelli disse che era difficile per Del Monaco a cantare mezza voce, a causa della tecnica che a usato, soppratutto col passare del tempo. Corelli invece, era nato con la mezza voce`

    Fatemi capire: della Callas non hanno mai realizzato un video di “Norma” e invece hanno immortalato questa patata della Ross?! Del Monaco solo stentoreo, degli altri si taccia. L’unico vero artista con un po’ di stile belliniano è Mario Guggia, gran professionista.

      Non esiste solo Callas in Norma...ci sono altre interpreti di questo ruolo,più o meno brave ...ma questo è il 1967,e Callas era già al caffè! Naturalmente non è brava come la signora Callas,("ma chi lo è")Se a lei non piace il Pollione di Del Monaco direi che è uno dei pochi a non riconoscere la grandezza vocale insieme alla sicurezza di emissione e alla recitazione scenica,che non la troviamo in nessun altro interprete!!! È l'insieme di tutte le prerogative,che occorre ,per essere un Pollione credibile! Il Flavio di Guccia è ottimo glielo riconosco...il problema è che Mister Del Monaco l'ho visto molte volte in teatro ed in svariati ruoli...mi creda a quello che sto scrivendo...nessuno al suo pari...cordialmente
