For me, especially with non-pleasure reading, it's become harder to just read. I usually feel the need to read every word mentally. My eyes can read the words quickly, but my brain lags behind trying to take in every word while trying to balance the mantras and worries that I can't seem to let go of. I feel the need to always hang on and worry and feel guilt. It's a struggle.
Thank you so much for such a helpful and compassionate video. I have been really struggling with re-reading OCD, which has been so painful since I'm a huge book lover. OCD always attacks the things that we love. Thank you again for your advice. Sending good vibes and strength to everyone dealing with OCD!
Everytime OCD gets me, i watch this video and read people comments. This is very helpful, it’s like mastering the art of not giving the f*ck. I know people will keep reading this comment, guys move on - learn to handle the discomfort. It’s just in your head, we got one life so enjoy and stop bothering for things like these as we have bigger issues to deal with.
Even i am reading my comment again😂 for the sake i conveyed my message correctly. I know i did but still i re-read it. Lol. Yeah it’s hard to fight your brain, but let’s move on.
This is super helpful, but also terrifying. The uncertainty is hell. The foundation here is changing your whole mindset to simply not give a f*ck. And it'll probably make life easier in so many other situations 😁
Thank you so much for this video. I struggle with this every day, and it’s heavily impacting my school work. I haven’t been able to put my finger on the issue, but recently I thought about the problem more, which helped me stumble across this video. I used this video as practice, as I was tempted several times throughout the video to go back and listen to what you said again. But I saw that the discomfort isn’t that bad, and I actually feel more clarity when I finish the video without going back over and over. I hope everybody going through this gets better. I know it can be stressful, but you are stronger than you know. You ARE capable of handling your OCD :)
Thank you. So. Much. Sincerely. This is probably going to sound dramatic, but OCD rules so much of my life and ruins so much of it. The top two that I struggle with are religious OCD and reading OCD. I noticed that it gets worse whenever a certain stressful situation pops up in my life (I won't go into detail here, but it's a specific person who I have to see every weekend) and just like clockwork, my symptoms get worse to the point that I'm barely functioning. This video was not only helpful but empathetic. Obviously, I'm not going to be cured by a single nine minute video on TH-cam, but within a few minutes, you made me feel seen, heard, and not so alone. These problems make me feel weird, like I'm this black sheep. But you gave me the confidence to actually pick up a book and read three pages while only rereading once or twice. That may not sound like a lot, but for me, not even exaggerating when I say it takes me up to five minutes to read one page because of how often I reread. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
I'm at Uni and I get this when listening to my recorded lectures; I end up spendinng a whole day just on one 45min lecture. Thanks and I will try this; the compulsions are really strong esepecially since I'm on a course where attention to detail is key

For me, its also about where I stop scrolling from. It has to be a new sentence at the top and no words can be cut off on the bottom. it has to fit into one 'page'. If I'm reading and notice words have been cut off, or I bump the screen or mouse and scroll further up, I have to reorientate before I can read again or restart reading. Luckily now I've taught myself to mostly just keep reading, but the page still has to fit nicely before I can continue. I have had people ask me what I'm doing before but don't have an answer they'll understand. I have gotten much better at just reading through however. It still gets me sometimes, and its a good opportunity to use your advice! Thank you!

@@keepmeinstitchesss A lot of what the video said are amazing points to help! For me, when I was doing it by myself, I got to a stage where I was exhausted and very broody, and decided to use that as a motivator for when re-reading back that I'd re-read closer from where I got stuck than completely restarting the whole paragraph. For example, instead of rereading from the top of the paragraph, I'd start at the last full stop I'd last read. It can take a lot of tension, upset and patience, but slowly reducing the amount of influence your OCD wants to make shows yourself that you make the rules and compromise instead, shortening it each time that it no longer bothers you as much. Music playing on my headphones during reading tends to make the thoughts less profound. Sorry about the late reply. This is my first timing searching about this. I love to read, but I always find myself rereading a word or a sentence, until it feels right. I can mess up on one word and have to start from the beginning of the sentence. Sometimes I force myself to continue to read, but man is that hard to avoid. I had to go to google, because I always felt that something wasn’t right. It took me years to actually look into it, but here I am. Thank you for sharing this video. I am not proud of this, but I am also not embarrassed by it. It is aggravating and sometimes it makes me not want to finish reading because of becoming overwhelmed by it. I was put into a program for reading as a kid because I didn't test well in the school reading tests for reading comprehension and reading speed. They figured I could barely read picture books and as consequence, wouldn't let me read chapter books that I wanted to read. Funny enough, as an adult, I can now tell others what I remember: the environment was stressful because they timed me while I read, and they let me know they were going to ask me questions about what I read, so I would reread and stumble over the words so that "I made sure I understood what I read" and did so "quickly". lol I read fine; I just didn't do well in the environment.
