    I've only seen 25secs of the video so far but OH BOY do I understand the need for this.
    I very clearly remember this one time, I was leveling up Dark Knight and got into Aurum Vale, a lvl 50+ white mage neko-girl was our healer and we wiped three times on the first boss because for some reason I coudnt stay alive. I was blaming myself and they were blaming me too... until I saw that the WHM had level 20 gear, very neatly glamourized with mogstation stuff so it looked decent.
    I pointed that out and got kicked in seconds.

    PS for new peeps: Especially do the Hall of the Novice trials at level 15! It'll outfit you with a set of gear which can actually carry you to about level 20-30 (definitely upgrade if you get dungeon gear that drops once you hit around level 24 or so if it's better, and make sure to keep up with the rest of your gear, but I've found that even the tank gear can keep up with dungeons such as Totorak).
    You'll get a chest piece, hands, legs, and feet...plus if you do the final trial, you get a ring which gives a good +3 to all the major stats and increases the exp you earn if you're level 50 or below (this exp boost does not apply in PoTD). So, from about 15-24, you only really have to keep up with your weapon (as the weapon provides some of the highest stats) and possibly accessories (you can probably skim the surface with the accessories and just get them as quest rewards or through your GC).
    I've never tried the Hall of the Novice with a caster dps, but you can get caster gear (balanced Mind and Int) if you go in as a healer, tank gear if you go in as a tank, and melee dps gear if you go in as any of the many dps classes (even ranged classes like Archer).
    Also, if you decide to level via PoTD (and-or HoH), please do your class/job quests (this will require you to be geared)...especially if you're a tank. Your job quests will give you very important skills (like your tank stances, which you'll always have one of the two up at all times once you obtain them).

    Many people also disregard upgrading their weapon if tank or healer, when they are also super important both to keep aggro output ahead did what the spa generate and to increase your healing potency. If you are a tank or a healer don't disregard your weapon, it can have a very very big impact

      When I first started playing I was told that if I go healer or tank then I need to make sure that my gear is within 5 levels of the dungeon that I'm trying to enter. DPS can far away with 10 lvls difference.
      Having casually leveled almost every class in the game now over a span of 2k hours I can say that that was some sound advice.

    After watching the video, I think the responsibility swings both ways in making sure no player has a miserable time with leveling. I never felt right about chewing out new players over their underdeveloped gear, tho I still point it out to them. I try my best to educate them on how to get adequte gear and if their on my same server, I try to point them to someone who can make them gear (if not myself). While I do agree that it's not everyone's constant responsibility to look after new players 24/7, I also feel as a community we have to play a role in friendly guidance and mentorship so we don't create any scarring toxicity that could be someone else's scar.

      Exactly. I always give tips to players who seem to be struggling. Yes they annoy me sometimes but I always collect myself and then point out something which they can improve on.
      Unfortunately there are people who are absolutely maniac and will destroy you if you don't do things perfectly. I had a guy quit a dungeon once because I didn't have the better weapon for my lvl. Dude I was leveling up so fast that I will touch my gear when o get to lvl 60. And it's not like we were doing something difficult.

    Omg thank you, this is exactly what I’ve been trying to find for a while now. As a new-ish player (only a bit into HW) I kitted myself out in gear with the Tomestones but stopped collecting them cause I didn’t know if they were only a RR thing and maybe HW/SB were a different currency. It’s really tough to find guides like this for middle game stuff. Everything seems to be directed at brand new players or endgame players.

  • @NagaTales
    @NagaTales 5 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    To be specific on when Level Cap (50/60) gear "expires" and what gear is better:
    - lvl50 Augmented Ironworks gear (i130) falls slightly behind High Quality lvl54 gear (i133); and the first Dungeon that awards better gear is The Aery at lvl55, which rewards the Orthodox Set (i136).
    - lvl60 Augmented Shire gear (i270) is slightly worse than High Quality lvl64 gear (i273); and the first Dungeon to farm for upgrades will be Bardham's Mettle and its Nomad Set at lvl65 (i276).
    Judging from this pattern, it's safe to say that the lvl70 i400 Augmented Scaevan Set can be expected to hold up until you start getting HQ lvl74 gear (i403), and the lvl75 dungeon should reward an i406 set.

    • @RealRowas
      @RealRowas 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except that for SB, the Defense stat is VASTLY superior on the HQ i273 gear, so for a tank, if you have the option for the HQ i273 gear, you should take it.
      The HQ gear is better than i270 in every regard and actually makes it much, much easier to get your hands on the i276 gear from Bardham's.
      (HQ i273 have 11.92% more defense than Aug Shire for tanks.)
      Healers, maybe, take the gear, I can't really say since I don't really play healers.
      For DPS, if you have access to it, do it, just try to get the weapon at least.

    Something also to note is that in the earlier levels, any job can equip any gear. I've seen tanks wear caster gear before, healers wear casting gear. So just make sure you equip the right type of gear for your job. I've seen people equip the wrong type of gear before and they are squishy as hell too. It's as bad as having someone under the minimum item level you "should" be to complete a levelling dungeon (even though those don't have ilvl restrictions).

    • @justinpurdy3117
      @justinpurdy3117 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justinpurdy3117 Compatability goes downwards. Tanks can wear DoW gear and most mage and DoH gear is 'All Classes', so it's possible to see a tank wear something completely mismatched, but the only way for a mage to run around with the wrong pants is by wearing DoH equipment.

    When I was starting new and playing through initially, I found even a new player can keep up gear good easily from 1-60 since even vendor gear was available in main cities for most part and market board gear was pretty cheap too so that was not a problem. The BIG problem I found at least while you're working on the MSQ for the first time in Stormblood for 60-70, you can so easily outlevel the gear process for those levels just doing roulettes everyday so you can get to be high level in only level 60 gear and still be a ways behind on the MSQ and the big problem is in SB, they made the gear vendors for certain levels be in certain areas along the line of MSQ so like I got to 1 point where I was 66 or 67 still in Poetic lv 60 gear and only on about lv 62 or 63 MSQ so I couldn't get to lv 66 vendor gear and market board gear was WAY too expensive for a new player to afford cause they were 50k-100k or even more for 1 piece and at those levels as a new player, I only had about half a mil or less gil. Thankfully I found some great people in the free company I joined that I asked for help and they went and bought some lv 66 gear from vendor and came out to meet me and traded me the gear so I could survive a lot better and it didn't take forever to kill anything. The fact 60-70 vendors are spread out rather than in Rhalgr's Reach or Kugane is bad for times like now with new players. They could stand to change that at least.
    Sorry for long ramble but since you mentioned gearing while leveling, I wanted to share my experience while being a new player again (player before and lost account info so I had to start over when I returned).

    • @rct2fanatic
      @rct2fanatic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Should add also that my experience came from the fact that I paid the extra $50 to also boost a job to 60 (although I wound up not playing it long and switched cause I couldn't get the hang of rotation as a first job but will go back to it later) and skip straight to Stormblood MSQ and skipped ARR and Heavensward story.

  • @nauscakes1868
    @nauscakes1868 5 ปีที่แล้ว +82

    Two things I want to add.
    Please for the love of God, do NOT roll need on items you're just going to sell for seals. Let the new players get upgrades if they need them. Seals are NOT a need situation.
    Also, if you're running duties--ROLL or PASS immediately when loot shows up. That stupidly undergeared tank could need 3 upgrades, and they're all just 'sitting away' in the loot window, because some one's too lazy to roll and would rather just let it time out. I can't tell you how many times as a tank I've literally stopped pulling to yell at people to roll or pass.
    --------
    Additionally, that augmented gear Happy was talking about can be dyed if that helps motivate people to get it.

    • @ChaseFace
      @ChaseFace 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Unless, of course, you're a tank/healer and you're the only one that can use the equipment. In which case, duh. I'm not going to give away every piece of equipment to players that MIGHT use it for a second or third job, the roll system exists so people have a chance to roll for it, and if you lose, better luck next time. It's nice to think of others, but I need ventures for my retainers and books for my crafters and gatherers to level up faster. We can't all be super generous carebears.
      And really? Holding up the whole party to insist everyone rolls for loot? That's super petty, just move on, the timer is only like 5 minutes. Worst case scenario everyone will get it when the non-roller exits the dungeon.

    • @Randsel
      @Randsel 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I say everyone choose need on something they need. You have no idea 99% of the time what player/roll needs what gear. If I know I can sell something for seals I will need it. I play this game to help my player grow. If someone asks in chat for certain items then for sure I'll let them have it, I will pass. But if its just a cash grab, every man, woman or Miqo'te for themselves lol

      This makes no sense, a new player running anything as Tank or Healer will ALWAYS get the gear they roll need on because no one else can. ARR is an exception since more classes share gear, but at this point of the game, gear is much more cheaper vs HW or SB.

    For me the gear progression for my alts is: 1 - 15 use quest items (not really important), 15 - 30 (or Brayflox unlock) use the Brand New sets from Hall of Novice + Friendship Circlet or Quest/Dgn helm, 30 - 45 use any Dgn drops you get until 45 then swap in your AF gear, 45 - 50 use AF gear + Dgn body until 50 then switch to full AF set then start farming Poetics to get ilvl129/130. After that just start collecting Dgn drops once your gear starts falling behind all the way to 60 then tomestone gear again, then do the same all the way to 70.

    So many people forget about Centurio Seals. If you keep up with the Hunt Side activity, it can be an amazing way to gear. Right when you hit 70 at the current patch for catch up, I think 1k seals and some change can get you almost a full set of 330 (maybe 350 I can't remember atm) gear, which will go a long way to getting you ready to finishing up all the MSQ post 70, and the item level requirements when you first hit 70. You can start getting Clan Centurio seals in Heavensward, so if you start as soon as you can at 50-60, and then pick up the quests and do hunts 60-70, should def be enough to gear up a fresh 70 and its also great for alts too.

Keep up with gear, rather slow down in your progression in order to gear up, than being undergeared. You are a tank, you are supposed to take the hits, in order to do so you MUST be geared.
    Second tip though: "know the content (dungeon/trial/whatever) and the mechanics BEFORE you play it.
    If watching a 5 minute video on TH-cam before you tank something first time is not your thing, please don't be a tank. There are other people depending on your performance and (technicly) you are expected to know what you do. So please do!

    Something as simple as adding a min ilv for msq dungeons will do alot to solve this issue. Currently, most MSQ dungeons at any level do not have any gear requirement at all, probably done intentionally to not gate players from experiencing story content. Most of these players probably don't know they're doing something wrong, the game sure doesn't tell them. You don't get as much of these issues with 'expert' dungeons and trials/raids as those typically have min ilvs attached to them. At least something to warn players that they need to up their gear a bit would be much appreciated.

While it might sound bad, I don't intentionally join current level dungeon and typically only use the roulette which has low odds of getting me into a dungeon in which I'm under geared, also do mind that tanks can negate having poor gear to a certain degree by staying in their tank stance, pulling slow and using cooldowns.

    As a brand new player, I am leveling so fast that my gear can’t possibly keep up. At level 33, I am getting geared by the level 20 quests in the main storyline. This is not because I ignored the MSQ... the leveling bonus is simply pushing me faster than the quests are gearing me.
    I started out doing all of the side quests (because I like questing everything out), but had to drop that early on because I noticed how bad the gear was pacing. Now I have reached a point where I’m level 33 with an avg item level of 15, and I don’t have anywhere near enough Gil to make a real dent in that number through purchases.
    I think I currently have about 20k Gil. Looking at the Market board, that will get me 3 to 5 pcs of gear that will (at present pace) be obsolete within 4 to 6 hours of play. I am loving the game so far, but this is a bit rough. They should probably let you pick at least 2 items from MSQ rewards.

    • @jeuznova
      @jeuznova 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      depending on where you are exactly on the MSQ, we can probably say that you're not exactly under-geared.. You're mostly likely over-leveled. in which case you should be fine. The gear rewards from the msq, and the sidequests combined should net you a good enough gear for the current msq content that you're in. You won't be able to get the higher level dungeons anyways without any progress on the msq. aaand you're probably gonna run into some good gear in your dungeons as well. So you're probably doing fine :)
      I have just returned to the game as well from years long hiatus, started a new character so that i could train myself well again, and honestly my gil was only spent on food, chocobo food, and the true end game content - Glamour Items :)
      OH. and job quests will actually give you full sets of armor eventually too.

    I know it wasn't the goal but as a player since 2.0 it makes it sound like the players are assess if you're not already at the gear level that the dungeon gives you. That's one of thing that bugged me about current tier raid content is them wanting you to already be at the ilevel you get rewarded. That being said I remember at early Heavensward not having access to a good astro weapon trying to heal Dusk Vigil and struggling immensely because of being under geared. I'd just say don't try and punch above your weight class and keep an eye out for any upgrades you can get, even if it means spamming the same dungeon over and over again to try and get some upgrades.
    The biggest problem is weapon upgrades, i recently got Samurai to 70 and went about trying to gear up through dungeons and if i hadn't lucked out and gotten a Seiryu katana on a rando ex run i'd still be stuck with my lost alagan katana due to not having enough mendacity and crystaloids for a better weapon.

    A lot of this makes much more sense after you are already deep in the game. For those not yet that familiar, it is confusing. Not the concept of better gear = easier life for all, but the where to get gear. I have a week of play time - first time playing FF but I’m very knowledgeable on MMOs. I, did quite a few side quests (all blue ones I found at each map) and all my job quests so far, reached 52 a few hours ago and going for the Ultimate Weapon quest/dungeon on the main quest line. Dressed with my BLM set and all other things that dropped from the dungeons, quest rewards and duty finders I did so far, and I am struggling to find info on gear: still rocking a superb ilvl 59 :/
    I had no idea what PotD was, the folks on towns whenever I shot a few Q’s weren’t that helpful after all and I still need to find some more source of data for the game. So it is not my entire fault I am lost in the world, I’m just not that up to speed as more experienced players are.

    I would have liked more detail to be honest. I feel there are definitely certain dungeons where the ilvl can sneak up on players who may only have 1 at level piece or who are still carrying a lvl 5 main body piece. Like Brayflox can be a rude awakening for DPS classes. Especially the last boss. Even when a tank doing a decent job in keeping the last boss out of the acid pools or minimizing the amount of time in pools, it can be a long fight even when properly done. Or rage quit inducing where you have a mechanically weak team and now don't have the needed damage to compensate for mistakes.
    Then Sunken Temple of Qarn can be a wake up call for the whole party. Even with the nerf in the bees, a poorly geared party will make for some really slow progress with a potential wall with the 2nd boss. I've done it a few times where we just can't get past it since either/or and sometimes both the tank and healer are undergeared.
    Aurum Vale also another likely dungeon to hit road blocks. The dot damage and debuffs can eat through HP where it gets to a point you're fighting an enrage timer with some groups.
    In HW I think the only dungeon to really look out for would be the Vault. Unless you got some really good healers for that, the last boss will make or break a team of mostly Ironworks Gear. Not worst in the Vault then finding out that you don't have enough HP or MP to survive the last boss. Well, nothing worst besides the following cutscenes...*sniff....
    And so on and so forth. I would have liked to have heard your thoughts on those kinds of dungeons. Especially in regards to what kind of trouble a more casual group would run into.

      Its moreso along the lines of having to unlearn bad habits nurtured by the deep dungeons. An entire team of DPS can get through them with smart pulls and taking their time, something that you cannot do in a normal dungeon. Not to mention that, in a normal dungeon you have to be able to play your class decently in order to succeed, with less of that emphasis on the DPS ofc. You can get by as a shitty DPS for the most part, but where the bad habits learned in the deep dungeons hurt the most is on the tanks and healers.
      I've been witness to these "deep dungeoneers" on many occassion. Just one today while I was leveling NIN. An SCH that had done exclusively PotD up until lvl 47. All they did was spam physick, didnt know what Adloquium was, and when I tried to give them some constructive criticism, because I main SCH, they just up and left because they refused to believe that it was their fault, instead blaming the tank and calling them an asshole for leaving. It wasnt even the tanks falk. This healer couldnt even heal a 4 mob pull, with standard being 6 because all they did was spam physick, which you can get by with just fine in PotG or HoH, but not in a regular dungeon.
      So no, the premise of "teaching bad habits" is not retarded, because it actually does happen. Yes, you'll do dumb stuff when leveling through regular dungeons, but at least people notice, because it effects everyone, and they'll be corrected and hopefully learn, something which rarely happens in the deep dungeons.

    Thanks for this video. I started shortly before the Twitch Prime offer came in because Steam had an offer for the complete game and kind of went with what I got.
    To the credit of having the Road to 60, I was level 20 when I first went to the Walking Sands and took a hard break with skipping side quests completely, doing my best to catch up. And because I was so desynced, I bought vendor gear every now and then when I saw that some spots were far behind. Which lead me to noticing how bad vendor jewelery is. Just two stats against three or more? Still had to stick with what I got. Or the Vendor gear I picked up when some slots were far behind my character level. Dungeon drops blasted me away every now and then because some slots are just not that regularly updated. Then I didn't update them until the 45 and 50 Job Quests.
    Anyway, I am glad to hear that there is real meaning to grinding and progressing through the level 50 content. Is it a pain? Yes. Especially since I am coming from WoW where Heirlooms circumvent that issue altogether and you just don't care about anything before the current expansion. Or current max level content, rather.
    I will definitely look into crafting gear now too for my second Job, not being sure what it will become. Second: Summoner
      Withholding possibly switching to Summoner at one point because I am thinking about leveling it before hitting Heavensward.
      Third: meme jump killed me, AGAIN!
      Fourth: if you don't want me, I will take the ONE melee you want, at all times
      Fifth: Let me play you a song

      Summoner is just interesting to me, despite the wind-up. But I don't even know how far I will get in the game. There's nothing wrong with gearing per se, provided that you were playing the game on content. The game provides plenty of free gear gated behind various main and side quests and content. The issues arise when you are a new player blasting through older content with various exp buffs, which generally encourage players to skip said side quests that gives them the gear. Plus, we have those players that don't play MMOs for the story, and you can see why alot of gear that is freely offered to most players are so easily missed. Happy is also covering this issue for players that are leveling alt jobs, where you might not have kept random healer gear when were you a tank main.

    • @KonDragon008
      @KonDragon008 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's broken, but I do sometimes wish there was an ilvl minimum on some dungeons. A few days ago, I did ex roulette and we got a healer in The Burn who still was using a 290 weapon. Needless to say, we wiped multiple times (I stopped counting after 5) on the final boss because two hits and they were dead...plus I was healing for more than them and I was RDM. I felt bad for them, and we were all still nice and understanding (and tried multiple times regardless, but couldn't get the boss below 5%), but some players just don't keep up-to-date on their gear and it's an inconvenience to the other players.
      So instead of yelling at those players, a guide like this is helpful because it's constructive; it's telling people who don't really understand the gear upgrades and how necessary they are how and where to get better gear. So it's not so much that the ilvl/gearing system is broken, it's just players who either don't fully understand how to properly gear up...or the ones who who are lulled into the false thought process that their current gear is sufficient because of a lack of ilvl restriction.

      @@lxlthecrowlxl i read what you said but I've encountered people like you and people like you make MMOs a bad experience. It's a game, a persons worth isn't measured by how well you do in a MMO. I swear 🙄... Chill or perhaps leave but no reason to be a rude prick. What's the joy in all that? Shit happens. Wipes happen, its not the end of the world and so trials have tons of mechanics that'll wipe and the most experienced players can wipe it. It happens. You just keep at it. I've been in trials for hours with experienced people and I've run through them with less experienced people and had less wipes and I've been in groups that just couldn't get pass a boss no matter what.. Usually because someone is giving bad advice as fact. It varies.

    Thought id ad some extra tips for ya.Number 1.Dont forget centurio seal gear if you cant get many mendos/genesis early say its your first character the lost alagan gear is 330 upgrading to 340 which is nice starting out say if you have no tomes for the other stuff at 70.Number 2. As was taught to me there is a priority for upgrades for the best efficiency the order for most bang for your buck is Weapon since all abilities/healing/dps rely on it the most then Chest piece is second Leg piece is third, then Helm/Gloves/Boots,the Belt is after all of that cause it provides less then the others.Accessories aka the rings/necklaces/ears/bracelets last since they provided only 1 defenses and are mostly stat sticks.also yeah 2-5 levels below dungeon is a good setup for tanks and healers dps up to 6-10 level below. though try not to be on the extreme far end of that cause it really hurts your overall.

    I was doing the vault the other day leveling my warrior. I had to pop a ton of CD every pull. I thought I was taking a ton of damage the healer started DCing so while waiting someone inspected his gear. Level 34 WHM staff.... needless to say he was kicked pretty quick.

    I feel like this is a slight exaggeration. A fully augmented ironworks/shire set should carry you all the way to 60/70, at least in my own experience. Though it probably matters a lot more if you're playing Tank, since it's mostly the defensive values that drastically increase at the 55/65 mark.

    • @DracoSuave
      @DracoSuave 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correction.
      A fully augmented ironworks/shire set will let a group carry you to 60/70.
      I'm sorry, but so many times I see dps or tanks do this, and they can't do chainpulling in Doma castle when stuff should actually die swiftly.

    Ok so hopefully I'm not alone in this endeavor but am I the only one who thinks its a bit overwhelming to pick a server when creating a new toon? Since you'll be doing lower level content just maybe you can kinda give your thoughts on picking a server since the economy varies from server to server? :)

    Curious why he said the turning point was 54/64 when everyone basically says 56/66 with the level 57/67 dungeon being the major turning point. I mean I guess it's not wrong, but everyone I've ever spoken with says as such. My guess is it must be for more inexperienced individuals, who may not know how to maximize the gears potential.

    • @Mrhappy1227

      54/64 is where the armor officially outscales the previous expansion's best (outside of weapon which is the best until 55/65). Imo better to enforce the idea of players watching this being aware of the breaking point earlier, as a higher level might cause players to think they can squeak by for just a few more levels.

    Ummm.... Don't your job quests also give Gear at level 50, 60 and 70?

    • @LookItIsHope
      @LookItIsHope 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but the gear the Lv50 and Lv60 ones give you have pretty laughable stats. The 70 one is also bad, but it wasn't too bad at 4.0 launch. The last job quest gear is just good at expansion launches and are meant to just get you through the last quests for expansion launches. It is best to replace that gear asap. I'm sure it'll be the same case in Shadowbringers.

    If you are skillful as a healer you can let your gear go a bit longer in Stormblood and only replace it with pieces you pick up during the story and doing the dungeons for it. That is 60+. I never spent a single gil on gear for stormblood at all when going through it.
    The only time it became an issue for me was the level 70 white mage quest. Because my main hand weapon was still my relic from Heavenward. But I forced through it knowing I'd get a new one once I beat that quest.
    I would say if you don't replace most your level 50 gear for Heavenward by 56 then make sure you do before the next dungeon. But for Stormblood you can go to 67 with very little issues in level 60 gear. But only for healers or dps as long as you remember to dodge!
    Tanks need to have the best gear that they can at all times as your ability to take damage relies on it and just your raw hp. Plus with lower gear you will have a harder time keeping agro, moreso with over geared healers and dps.
    The point is you can make up for a bit of lost in each healing by being skillful as a healer.
