A virtual trip along the Strzelecki Track

  • The Strzelecki Track is a famous mostly unsealed outback “highway” in South Australia. It is 475 kilometres long, with no shops or petrol stations along the way. The road connects Innamincka (in the north) and Lyndhurst (in the south).
The Strzelecki Track takes its name from Strzelecki Creek (which it follows for part of the way) and Strzelecki Desert to the south. Explorer Charles Sturt named Strzelecki Creek in 1845, after the Polish scientist, philanthropist and explorer Paul Edmund Strzelecki, who (among his other accomplishments) climbed and named Australia’s highest mountain, Mount Kosciuszko.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Strzelecki Track was a major stockroute and, prior to European settlement, the route was used by indigenous folk for trade, custom and travel. The route follows a series of waterholes, important in bygone days, when the availability of water was essential for travellers (on foot, camel or horse).
Today, the road is used by truckers, workers and pastoralists, as well as travellers (like my husband and me) who want to experience the “real outback”. It is also used and maintained in part by Santos, the company that currently has the rights of exploration and processing of natural gas at Moomba and other sites in that part of South Australia.
For us, the trip took 8½ hours, as we stopped on several occasions, for a break or to explore the area and take photographs. There were quite a few “40” zones, due to roadworks, and one section where we stopped completely to observe what the workmen were doing. Otherwise, we were able to travel (on the average) between 70 and 80 km/h on the gravel.
I hope you enjoy your virtual trip along the Strzelecki Track as much as we enjoyed the real thing!

Did this trip in 2017 via Cameron Corner and marvelled at the bird numbers at the Montecolina Bore

You would have noticed a big difference when you got off the sealed bits of road. A liked the 3D sign "Drowsy Drivers Die". You did not have to fight for a seat at the Strzelecki Creek rest area. I noticed the little wrens on the fence at that stop. Some lovely photos of the countryside in bloom. You would have liked the signs sealed road 5 K ahead etc. AS usual a well documented video Judy thanks for sharing!!

Maurie, yes, there were many interesting signs along the way, and (of course) we looked forward to those "sealed road 5K ahead" signs. Thanks for your feedback!

How did you manage tyre pressures with so many changing surfaces?

We had brand new tyres, which stood up to all kinds of surfaces throughout our entire trip of more than 7500 km!
