Another video I've been waiting for. So many memories. I owned this version instead of the sega version because the graphics and sound are superior. Many hours spent playing this back in 1993-1995. "Chest Hair Fatality" ftw. 👍👊
It’s all about the memories, while this game might not be the greatest because of several factors it still holds a huge part in my childhood and teen years because like yourself I played it quite a bit, I never had the Genesis version growing up this was it for me. Me and my buddy had some epic battles on this cartridge. Thanks for the comment PAX I appreciate you bro 👊🏼
I lived in Chicago in the neighborhood around the Midway office. In MK3, they used the area around their office for some of the level backdrops -- the subway stage looks like the Logan Blue subway stop closest to their office, Belmont St outside looks like one of the street backgrounds near their office with the garbage blowing ("Chicago, the Windy City"). The games were fantasy but they did involve some local easter eggs . Neither I nor Midway are there now....ahhh memories
Wow that’s a really cool story my man thank you for sharing that, sounds like some great memories also. I love hearing those kinds of things in comments so I appreciate it! 🙏🏽👊🏼
my biggest issue with this game besides the censorship was the laggy controls. Every button press seemed to take a few frames for it to register. What i found fascinating about this anomaly, however, is how it registered jumps in the same way. By design, Liu Kang should not be able to fight reptile because his fatality requires holding the block button to perform the 360, but as a kid, i managed to pull it off once without holding block and fight reptile as Liu Kang bc of how the game takes a while to register inputs.
This version was my introduction to Mortal Kombat. It's laggy, it's got a couple of awful neutered fatalities (though credit where credit's due, a couple of awesomely animated new ones; Raiden and Sub Zero, that also became something of a template for them in all future installments) and the hit detection was also very, very questionable. HOWEVER, it looks absolutely gorgeous (possibly the best looking home console version from the time?) and god I absolutely LOVE the music of SNES MK1. It's got this pure Hong Kong cinema horror movie sound to its score that for me absolutely outdoes even the original arcade soundtrack, those harsh chords clanging like some haunting Oriental apocalypse. Personal highlights were The Palace Gates, The Pit, The Warrior Shrine, Shang Tsung's Throne Room, the character select screen and the grim percussive procession played upon the performance of a fatality; *MWAH* (chef's kiss). For atmosphere alone, I still consider SNES MK1 one of my favorite moments in the franchise. Absolutely love the sound of this version and wish modern MK sounded this eerie and mystical. Street Fighter 2 got three versions released at full price on the SNES, and all were successful, one can only wonder what would have happened had they released the uncut and expanded MK1 Nitro Edition in the lead-up to MK2. I'm not convinced it would have hurt MK2's sales in the slightest and if anything, would have further improved the SNES's reputation as a force to be reckoned with.
Fun fact: because this and the genesis versions are what I grew up with I never knew the original game had blood in it until I watched the history of mortal kombat video from deadly alliance. Was probably 14 years old when I figured it out

They have hearts of stone. All organs are made of stone in this version. When you punch someone in the face the grey stuff that flies off is just the rock surface eroding and Johnny Cage can even punch you in the stones.
I'd love to see someone like yourself that is knowledgeable of the combo system, dig into the crazy juggle/corner combos found in the PAL SNES version.
CPU will NEVER...do a fatality or knock you into The Pit on Super NES. Likely a further effort to distance from the violence. As a kid having never played it on Arcade I didn't even think there was fatalities (despite "Finish Him/Her"). Then a friend told me there WAS fatality and that Scorpion's was Up, UP. Went up, fired the game up, did it, MIND MELTED! Anyway, Johnny Cage and Sonya will never defend against sweeps. NEVER. If you fight either of them on The PIt...easy Reptile fight is in your hands!
That’s cool that you remember seeing that Scorpion Fatality, I think we all remember our first time (in Kombat 😂) as for the tips on JC and Sonya, I had no idea so thank you for sharing that 👊🏼
I remember getting through the SNES version by spamming low fireballs from Liu Kang. Then I played at my friend's house, that had a Genesis, and I won by spamming the superman with Raiden. I was always jealous of the Genesis version, but SNES made it right with MK2.
This SNES Mk Version was my first ever direct Gateway into Mk entirely since 1994.✨ For an Adaptation from the Arcade, the Graphics & Sounds was Great, unfortunately it mainly Lacked Blood & a few poor fatalities, which was a huge deal breaker for heaps..

In this old classic mortal kombat the best attack is the flying punch believe me what I tell you master the flying punch they cannot touch you just like the arcade😊
I was/is a genesis fan (that blood though) so I’ve not seen the ending on this one. The credits are making up for it by referring to themselves as “dudes” I guess? Like “we’re cool dudes, dude!”. Thanks for keeping it real with the family friendliness that this game promotes. You took your beatings very graciously by not raging. (I’ve seen the mythologies run, very funn- I mean, very shameful language). Kano in this version “steals your wallet”, but I do like your take: rips your armpit hair out! Very helpful of him (saves on shaving time). I also noticed that Mr. Shang is calling out the names of the various souls as they exit his body as he “dies”. Very nice of him!
I liked the graphics better on snes than sg, was just unfortunate they didnt put the blood. Raidens fatality I actually liked turning you to dust is actually just as brutal if not worse than making your head explode when you think about it.
Between the SNES and Genesis versions the Nintendo system looks and sound very close to its Arcade counterpart. Gameplay though suffered with high latency of inputs.

You don't have to imagine no blood in MK2. Just play the super famicom port. All the blood is green, and fatalities are done in black and white. I'm not kidding.
One cool thing about Cage's fatality in this game is that they redid it for the MUGEN game MKTX, and they really made it into a pretty good fatality. They also improved Raiden's SNES fatality in that game.
Interesting video! Thanks for sharing, and it's a shame about those niggles. The graphics and fluidity do look good, and they've got at least some of the SFX and music there making it feel and look of the time. But I feel your pain with non-responsive controls, that can kill enjoyment of a game. Love the fatalities also! 😆 Thanks for enduring this for our entertainment!! 👊
Input delay. But the game allows for buffered inputs. This is the version i grew up with. I never played the arcade. This is my favorite version of mk1.
as a kid i would put masking tape around my knuckles and rub them as fast as i could back and forth horizontally from A to C on the genesis controller to build up power in the bonus stages to win. probably harder to do with the button positions on the snes controller.
Back in the day the Reptile hints in the SNES used to creep me out. I guess because they gave him Shang Tsung’s laugh. In the arcade Reptile just jumped between the fighters without the laugh. Now it’s funny because now he looks like a Chad and his actual name is Zysoth.
Had this version had the same hidden blood cheat code as the Sega version, it literally would’ve been the best home port. Nintendo learned their harsh lesson and completely decimated Sega with MK2.
It is mind blowing that an opinion like yours could possibly exist in 2024. It was a terrible port and Nintendo has nothing to do with the poor control that makes it so.
One of the good things of this version is the arcade accurate ending after you beat Shang Tsung and all the characters morph out of his body. Even the Genesis and Sega CD couldn't get that right. Oh, and the Rayden spelling is because of the arcade vertical shooting game Raiden. They didn't want any copyright issues. And Raiden and Raiden 2 are some really great games!

The other two "censored" Fatalities (Rayden and Sub-Zero), I don't really a problem with, and in a way, Subbie's is more brutal than his original.

You can't have blood in a video game, but you sell people cigarettes?
Nintendo made the choice not to put blood…as I know Nintendo never sold cigarettes…your comment made absolute no sense at all lmaoo no correlation whatsoever
@@louisfernandezleija69 I find you to be dumb and attention seeking.
At least play on mediums man.
I played the heck out of this game it's not that hard honestly
You can’t say that on you tube 😂
I know what you’re getting at lol BUT I wasn’t referring to someone but someTHING and I think that’s ok lol I dunno.
The music in this version is so ridiculous. Sounds like bad Castlevania. Genesis with 6 button is the only way to play it on console.
