I have Christine Issues too... and yes Charles Dance was such a sarcastic Phantom. In only that version I believe, Christine had some character of her own. Some love for a person who was never loved.
Also I have been looking for the paperback of Phantom by Susan Kay everywhere but it's not available in my area. And the ones that are here are way too expensive.

I should tell you that there was a fan film of Phantom called Erik :) th-cam.com/video/6JXbIQrHjPk/w-d-xo.html AND there is the Robert Englund Phantom movie. It's gruesome. But I LOVE the score.

We've talked about it before, but I completely agree with you about Susan Kay's "Phantom," I read it last year and loved it. As you said, the sheer breadth and depth of the novel made it so absorbing. I've been dying to see the Charles Dance version, but the DVD is out of print and super expensive.
I noticed you skipped over the Robert Englund version. ;)

Shockingly (or not) I have not seen the Englund version. I read about it in a book that discussed a lot of versions, and was pretty sure that was one I didn't need to see... :D The Charles Dance version is excellent - I didn't realize it was out of print. Such a shame!
