  • One of the greats.
    A peerless Classic campaign continues for Sea The Stars - winner of the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket and the Derby at Epsom, the brilliant Cape Cross colt justifies his short-priced billing as 4-7 in the Coral-Eclipse for trainer John Oxx, jockey Mick Kinane and owner Christopher Tsui.
    Sea The Stars would go on to complete an unblemished three-year-old campaign with further victories in the Juddmonte International at York, the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp to establish himself as arguably the greatest throughbred of all time.
    2009 CORAL-ECLIPSE FULL FINISHING ORDER:
    1 Sea The Stars (4/7F)
    2 Rip Van Winkle (11/2)
    3 Conduit (9/2)
    4 Cima De Triomphe (11/1)
    5 Steele Tango (100/1)
    6 Jukebox Jury (50/1)
    7 Twice Over (14/1)
    8 Malibu Bay (100/1)
    9 Lang Shining (150/1)
    10 Cornish (200/1)
    Sea The Stars was attempting to emulate Nashwan, who was the last Derby winner to gain a victory in the Eclipse against older horses back in 1989.
    Sea The Stars romps home to see of Rip Van Winkle to win the 2009 Coral Eclipse

    One of the greats.To win a Guineas to an Arc and all those Group 1s in between showed such a versatile horse and at such contrasting tracks and look at the quality of horses he beat along the way.Fame and Glory won an Irish Derby and an Ascot Gold Cup,Conduit won at two Breeders Cups and he beat a top class Arc field.Would have beaten Frankel at any distance I reckon

    He was a great horse, there is no doubt, the vid here is the second fastest Eclipse of all time, a track record broken at York, one of the fastest ever 2000 Guineas, and you brought in time to doubt him even if his Derby was a slow time his Arc win was 4 sec faster than standard. There is also no real claim that his oppostion was moderate taking into account all the G1 winners he beat.

    Rip Van Winkle is fantastic as well. He's coming to the states for the BC Classic. I can't wait! He's my pick to win the classic unless STS comes over. Sea the Stars winning over him just makes STS look even better. Fingers are crossed that STS makes the trip as well.

    QR will never beat RA. She was just only a tick off the track record at Monmouth Park over a track that had not been playing very fast all day long. Both STS and RA are the two most brillant horses in the world today. They race on two different surfaces, but are both sheer class. When they step on the track, you think 'boy, what are we going to see today'? They have already stamped their places in history as two of the greatest to have ever raced. RA will be facing older soon. Just enjoy them.

    This was a really tough field of competition that Sea The Stars took down on this day. A lot of really good colt's in this race. Usually, just beating Conduit is quite a challenge, but STS made it look like just another day at the office. Even in defeat, this was probably the strongest run that I've seen Rip Van Winkle make. Even knowing that he won the Sussex and the Q.E. II.

    MrPapaBill. I agree that the century has only started, and another champion may come along. I personally think the best horse in the last century was Dan Patch. He also ran in the first part of the last century. Eclipse is the most recent great one you have had to my mind in Britain. Note that this race is named after him. If STS is so great, then the race will be renamed the Coral Sea the Stars maybe.

    Dessie. The problem is that horse racing just doesn't have the same impact as it had, say, at the time of Dan Patch. We still remember the great horses of the past. Today, it is all about people like David Beckham, Serena Williams and Tiger Woods. In the last century, horses had this sort of fame. Hollywood movies were made about horses like Phar Lap, Seabiscuit and of course, Dan Patch.

    John Oxx never said he wasn't sure about his STS's trip , he was pulled from the Derby at the Curragh because of soft ground and he was never intended for the KG. Oxx stated that the plan after eclipse was the Juddmonte , Irish Champion & ARC. Your comment about the ARC is silly as STS would have beaten any field as he was quite simply the best of his time , and again Oxx did not state anywhere. Please get your facts right for the public.

  • @YourTVFriend
    @YourTVFriend 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @botelho27 You're right that there are other superstars who would have given him a race, but jockeys didn't try different tactics? At York it was Mastercraftsman and 2 Ballydoyle pacemakers vs. STS in a 4 horse race, and they let Mastercraftsman kick early. In the Derby they sat off him with Fame&Glory, then in Ireland surrounded and let Fame get first run on him. Fame then pocketed him in the Arc. They set suicidal paces for the Juddmonte and Irish Champion, and crawled in the Derby...

    Sea the Stars doesn't go flat to the boards to the line, as you can see in this race, he idles when he gets to the front and does just enough to win.
    Oxx and Kinane have talked about this numerous times, and perhaps is why people think hes so great; we never got to the bottom of him

    This Group 1 race often includes a classic winner/winners and Sea The Stars is the latest of them all. I feel that is an openly contested King George at Ascot and Conduit who placed in the Eclipse has a chance.

  • @Newworldman66
    @Newworldman66 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @zarakhast STS doesn't 'quicken again' - it's an optical illusion. RVW is closing on STS but when he gets to half a length off him Kinane waives his whip in RVW's face. RVW flinches then jinks to his left but despite this only loses by around a length. STS was just keeping on at the same pace.

  • @amazed66
    @amazed66 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Newworldman66 people sometimes have a perception or mind's eye view of events & see it one way & so if anyone offers up an alternative version then they tend to still feel their own one is the correct one.
    I personally think if someone offered up something different to what I thought then I'd take a second look if only to satisfy my own curiosity but if they were to be specific with their details, then I would probably take even more notice. The 3:47 part is fairly specific. :)

    @zarakhast We look at everything biasly no doubt.DB needed his turn of foot to be more 'sustained' because in his Arc victory he came from further back than what STS did.He would have won the race no matter what the circumstance and it was visually incredible to watch.All the same on the point of 'battling' I think DB was put through the mill by Eddery in his Arc win and to an extent in his KG victory.Did STS have to dig deep in winning his Arc?He won in the same manner as in all his wins...

    @zarakhast It is right, the incident happens at 3.47. Watch for RVW at that point moving his head sharply to his left. This has actually been covered by many people on many racing forums and there's quite a large article about it on a racing website although oddly enough there is no mention of it on the allegedly superior The Racing Forum on their 2009 Eclipse thread.

    I would have bet any amount of money, with maximum confidence, that Sea The Stars would have beaten Dancing Brave over any distance. Remember too that C4 racing and Racing UK were aware of the comparisons between STS and Dancing Brave - and Nashwan. They then set out to illustrate what STS would ( in theory ) have done to both had they met. After running VTs of 86 and 89 Eclipse side by side with this, the concensus was that Sea The Stars would have left Nashwan and Dancing Brave toiling.

    Watching the replay of the Coral Eclipse again, and also having seen both replays of his win's in the Q.E. II and the Sussex Stakes, I am still more impressed, even in a 2nd place effort in Rip Van Winkle's run in this race for the simple fact that he gave his all, and nearly ran down the best thoroughbred in the whole world. JMO.

  • @forsoup
    @forsoup 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    How on earth can you say Sea The Stars' turn of foot was overrated?! Hahahahahaha!!!
    You just saw Rip Van Winkle absolutely accelerate up on the outside of Sea The Stars so Kinane just took him up another gear and RVW simply had no answer.
    7 Group 1's in a row is pretty spectacular considering he 'didn't have something extra'.

  • @Newworldman66

    As a racing expert you'll know that Leopardstown is a much more testing course than York which is slicker. MC was a miler who didn't quite get home at York, if he had then he'd have won that race. He was toiling in the ICS from about 3f out on more testing ground, so he gets beat by a much bigger margin by STS. Go figure!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Just watch the Juddmonte International back from last season, Are you telling Me STS would have beat Frankel there? Ballydoyle employed 2 pacemakers again and even ran to the far rail to ensure it was a proper test of stamina instead of sticking to the inside. Frankel merely cantered alongside the pack and put 7 lengths between himself and a Gr1 field in the space of a furlong. Like I've said before thats the difference between the two...

    Sea the stars was a proper mile and half horse running in a 10f race. He didn't hold Rip van Winkle, he was starting to pull away and recorded a record time in that race.

    I couldn't give a shit about popularity so dont give me any argument on this, the horse doesn't care, your York fact is again just trying anything to put him down, you cant use that against him in The Coral Eclipse, the 2010 winner of this 18 lengths down in this one. 4 lengths more than the 2012 Interntional which says STS is more stronger than you give credit for. I'm going to see a defense of Twice Over now.

    There's nothing contradictory about my remarks. FYI Conduit only ever won in handicap company at 10f and his best form was over 14f on soft ground. STS may have broken the York 10.4f track record but he only won because MC folded in the last 100 yards, STS was 3-1 in running! STS was certainly the champ of 2009 but had to work too hard to win his races against moderate opponents. 6 G1s looks great on face value but none of the horses he beat upheld the form elsewhere. v.good horse just not great

    @zarakhast ....actually think exists yet DB actually had it himself.DB was'being caught at the line'but that seems to be o.k. Heard of the line 'needs his head putting in front on the line'?Why?Because some horses stop when in front beleiving they've done enough.So many horses have this idiosyncrasy and I've ridden some myself having been an apprentice with R.Hannon.Mr.Brooks was such a horse who won the July Cup.Why else would M.Kinane say STS would never win by more than a couple of lengths?

  • @GBeret83
    @GBeret83 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know that Aidan O'Brien has been trying to use Ryan Moore as much as his schedule with SMS will allow in big G1 races that Ballydoyle has entries in, and Jamie Spencer has been primarily riding F&G and Cape Blanco now that part of both of them have been sold to the lady that Spencer rides for. But before I'd want to see Ballydoyle take on Jamie Spencer to replace Johnny Murtagh? I'd rather see them take a chance with Jimmy Fortune. He did right by Rip in this race, IMO.

What does it really matter whether Dancing Brave had the ability to draw away in a race, and STS only won his races by a couple of lengths? Really, what does it matter? The bottom line is getting your horse across the wire FIRST!!! Mick Kinane did so quite effectively with STS. A win is still a win on a horse's record, whether he win's by 2 lengths or 22 lengths. STS was great enough to win 6 straight Group1's

    @szetotakwa I actually dont think the Derby/King George/Arc treble should be considered the real treble, because a guineas is a classic and over 1m, it shows how versatile a horse is if it has the speed to beat horses like delegator over a mile then step up and beat the worlds best 1m4f horses, and judging by what won 2009 king george (conduit) i think STS would have won the king george if he went to it.

His greatness is based on the fact that he is first horse since Nashwan (20 years ago) to have won the English Derby / 2000 Guineas double and the last horse prior to that, to do the double was Njinsky. But lets break that down a bit here; Out of the last 20 winners to have won the 2000 Guineas only two (Golan and Refuse To Bend) have ran in the Derby. Most of the top horses retire early so unlike jumps horse who race till 11,12 it can

    Looks like I've touched a nerve!
    DB has a rating of 141 in the International Classifications which to this day remains the highest ever awarded. STS's current rating is 131. So for him to bridge this gap he needs to show a lot more.
    Am I not allowed to highlight what I see as the flaws in STS's form? Isn't that what racing analysis is about?
    As I said previously to say Oxx fears no one with STS is false. He was pulled from the Irish Derby on the morning of the race avoiding a rematch...

    Anotherblonde - I take your point. Yes - S.T.S clocked the fastest time in the Eclipse since 1969. But so what ? Horse racing is NOT like Athletics where a fast time tells a lot about the competitor. A lot depends on the pace and the ground, granted S.T.S still achieved a great feat time wise. No doubt S.T.S will be rushed off to stud at the end of the season there by maintaining it's mythology as to its greatness. S.T.S is the Rocky Marciano of horse racing.

  • @Mr_Nigeria100
    @Mr_Nigeria100 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    be hard to gauge how good a horse like S.T.S really is. Maybe S.T.S is just a great horse in field of mediocrity ? What I do know is that if New Approach, Zarkava and Authorized where still knocking around THEN we would be able to see how good S.T.S really is. New Approach pretty much emulated was S.T.S has done. However in the 2000 Guineas he game up against a great miler in HenryTheNavigator b4 he went on to win the Derby. Zarkava is the greatest horse I have seen. He won the French

    @zarakhast The thing is you seem to want it both ways and are contradicting yourself.DB went to the front in his KG the same time STS went for home in his Arc.If DB's "turn of foot" wasn't short lived why did he 'run out of steam'?Or was it that he simply thought he had done enough for the day?.Eddery thought so because said he got there too soon and wouldn't make the same mistake in the Arc.So why is it alright for DB but not STS?Fact is STS was never tested and had a trait that you don't....

  • @Newworldman66
    @Newworldman66 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @tigerarmyrule STS didn't run in the KG! Oxx didn't fancy STS taking on the older horses over 12f at that time of the season so he swerved it preferring the 'challenge' of the 10.4f Juddmonte against a miler and 2 AOB pacemakers.

    Don't be silly.
    Sea The Stars holds Rip Van Winkle all day long. Evidence?
    The Guineas- won by Sea The Stars
    The Derby- won by Sea The Stars
    The Eclipse ;)- won by Sea the Stars
    Give the horse some credit- he could cruise, he could accelerate, he could dig deep. Outstanding.
    Rip is an outstanding horse- as seen this week at York, but Sea The Stars was simply brilliant. Kinane almost went too early on him in this race.

    @barbaro370 I think he is the best looking racehorse since Golden Fleece in '82 and before that Nijinsky in '70.V.O'brien always said Golden Fleece was a magnificent looking horse with an enormous stride,depth of girth and constitution.Nijinsky speaks for himself but I can't comment on the Great Ribot.

    Few will agree with you Broph1 that STS has achieved more than DB did at this equivalent point. STS isn't half the horse DB was, nor is he likely to be.
    STS has so far only proved himself to be a good horse over 10f on fast ground. To be a great you've got to do a lot more than that.
    As regards the Eclipse it seems RVW's best trip is a mile and 10f is way too short a trip for Conduit. Yet STS had to work really hard to win and was gritty rather than stylish....

    Sea the Stars clocked the fastest time in winning the Coral Eclipse since 1969 - this speaks for itself. Anyone who knows the first things about keeping horses in training will know how difficult it is to keep a top horse fit and well and in top form to achieve such race victories. Hawkwing was in my opinion the most over rated horse in recent times.

    Brilliant horse, best since Dancing Brave. If RVW didnt get the clip down the nose off Kinane this might of went to a photo IMO, RVW was just getting to STS. On this performance I dont think STS would of beat Dancing Brave though or one or two other Eclipse winners.

    No, I mentioned his slow Derby time in regard to Oxx not being convinced 12f was his best trip, which he inferred in an interview - his next 3 races were over 10f!!!!! Using race time to 'prove' superiority is a simpleton's argument, of which you are well qualified to make. Oxx pulled STS from the ID on the morning of the race as the last 3f was g/s, he only had F&G to beat!!! KG was swerved as apparently KG and Eclipse at 21 days is too close. Yet Juddmonte and ICS were just 18 days apart!!!!

    You talk like Frankel couldn't have produced 2.01 if he needed to, RVW was a very close match to STS over 10 furlongs whereas STS came into his own over 12 furlongs. He was a great mile and half horse and a mediocre 8/10 furlong horse who wouldn't have had such a record had Frankel been around in that 2009 season...

    @Newworldman66 Of course, you're absolutely right. Jim McGrath, Nick Luck, Steve Mellish and Graham Cunningham have all got it completely wrong. How could any horse, let alone Sea The Stars ( who afterall only won every group one race he entered and bettered every race time Dancing Brave ever set ) be superior ? In your tiny mind it doesn't happen. Therefore, I suggest you go and lie down and dream some more about that 1986 Arc. Afterall, it is how you get your rocks off, is it not ? LOL.

  • @ASupremeOwl
    @ASupremeOwl 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Don't get me wrong, Sea the Stars was a very good horse but not as great as some people think. I think he'd have been beaten very easily in previous generations gone by. But the same can't be said of Frankel. I reckon theres only been one miler in the last century who would have given him a race over that distance and thats the Brigadier and I don't even think that was Frankel's best distance either...
