Pretty much like Adam Schefter in the NFL. Reporters are at the top for long enough, and they ruin their own legacies either getting a huge ego or trying to generate stories that will keep them on top of the mountain.
The fact that leagues even put reporters in a hall of fame is already stupid in of itself. Hockey isn't the nba, no one cares about garbage like "storylines" and if they do we're gonna end up with the complete mess and disaster that the nba is, where no one actually watches the actual sport of basketball and instead just tune in to instagram highlights and instagram "beef" or other celebrity nonsense. The only place reporters should have in sports is coach/manager interviews. And they should be knowledgeable enough to ask tactical and insightful questions such as those, which are topics that are very difficult to see for most fans if not downright impossible. But no, instead the majority if not all of reporters are complete idiots, so we're left with the constant braindead bullshit of: *player scores hattrick* "How did you feel after scoring that hattrick?" Or "what were you thinking when you were 1on1 against the keeper" to which players then have to come up with complete bullshit to pad their answers otherwise the answers would be "I was happy" "I was thinking of scoring"
The funniest was earlier this season when Klim Kostin got Mattie in a scrum - “I think the fans don’t like your questions - you need to change something”.

I agree with your comments. I like Draisaitl - he hates to lose and doesn't suffer fools. The reporter should have shown some respect, or at least some insight.
Love Draisaitl and his response. The only frustrated or "pissy" here is Matheson himself, embarrasing to hear from a person with that kind of experience, complete lack of decorum and propriety.
Honestly, i think press interviews with players is the dumbest thing, in any sport, any player. It's just dumb and pointless. They all give these canned generic answers...waste of everyone's time.
Oiler fan for years. Matheson is in the HoF because of the right place at the right time. There in their hay day when all the world followed this Gretzky guy and his dominant team. That was 30 years ago. The guy is washed up and has been for 2 decades now. His written stuff is that of an grumpy old man, and his in-person reporting skills are, well, there you have it. He's also part of a long list of Edmonton reports, like Rishaug and Spector, that ask these ridiculous questions and pin players in a corner to answer them. Seeing Draisaitl and others call their bullshit is nice, but it should never come to that. Sure, ask some hard questions, but today's reporters are absurd with their jobs. Time to retire, Jim....
I remember the North Division in 2021 when all the Canadian teams were facing each other, and the Leafs and Oilers had a 3 game series. Toronto shut them out the first two games, and Edmonton only scored once in the third game. The final score was 6-1, and if Andersen held on for the third straight shutout, the Leafs would’ve been the first team to ever have 3 straight shutouts with 3 different starting goalies. After the third loss, a reporter asked Draisaitl if it was frustrated being held pointless for three games. He just responded with a sarcastic “No, we love that.” Who hires these people?
When I first heard it, I thought the reporter asked, "Why are you so "pithy"" because the answers were very short and direct, which seemed semi-appropriate. However, after replaying it several times, I think you and all the other commenters are correct, he did say "pissy". And I agree, that is not very professional. Interesting, that his last question is about LD keeping his cool during a game(his job) when the reporter just let his emotions get the best of HIM in this presser(his job). heh
I absolutely hate that the players are both a) forced to give these interviews and b) expected to answer them in a specific, on the line way. "How do you feel about this game?" - how the fuck do you think I feel? Should be a valid and acceptable response.
100% spot on....Reporters seem to think they are more relevant then they actually are.Add in Hall of Fame reporter to the title and its 10 fold worse. Ron Maclean who I have no use for is the all time King of injecting himself into a conversation to make him self relevant no matter what the situation is......High profile writers and TV personality's have a hard time just listening. It's the age old saying, Taking when you should be listening, in the real world it usually ends with a Blackened eye from the talker..
The best, I mean Masters Level at handling annoying so called "journalists" is Torts. No one in the NHL, absolutely no one, does it better. But Leon is holding his own. I got my BA in journalism, which doesn't even exist in our world today, unfortunately. I don't work in it anymore, except for my own podcast about running. I walked away after seeing what it really is. Glad there are a few in hockey fighting back.
I remember where there was another interview with him last season near the middle where he said something along the lines of "yeah no we won 4 in the past 14 games. it's great" and then he walked away from it, i think
It's funny he asked Draisaitl why he showed frustration. Nobody ever asked that when Crosby or Ovi broke their sticks on the bench in frustration. On the other end, if these players don't show the frustration, those reporters will come up with narratives saying "These players don't care about winning." You're never getting away with it no matter what you do. I understand if some fans on twitter do this because they poured their passion and maybe money into it, but as a reporter you gotta be professional.
Some more context here, Jim just baited Tippet (Oilers coach at the time) to throw their goalie under the bus a couple weeks previous. This resulted in a ton of articles including ones back in Finland and was the final nail for Tippet. Oilers were in the tail end of a skid (this was a week or two before Kane joined) and the media was being relentless especially the Edmonton media.
Larry Brooks does this, but because he’s a short and nosy snob from the Ny post, players would do the same. You can look up how Dan Boyle went off on him. Leon is being respectful instead of the funny clips like Russel Westbrook’s “what!?”
Dude, I love this interview. As a Calgary fan? It couldn't but make Draisaitl seem cool AF. (As an aside, I showed it to my wife and made the remark 'Smash'....I don't show her videos anymore).
Oh yeah. Agree with both sentiments - Draisaitl seems like a sharp guy, and major props to him for not taking the bait. And your wife is right, he's attractive AF
I have always found that watching interviews is painful, no matter how it goes, Dumb questions are asked too often, and it is obvious the players don't want to be there, but have to be to satisfy the media. It could stop tomorrow and I would be happy
I remember when I saw this I was thinking the same thing, players have tough nights and get pissed, they don’t have to be nice to the reporters and the reports need to realize that’s all they are, they report on someone else’s life
Same ole Edmonton media playbook, try to get a teammate to throw another teammate or coach under the bus, always stirring the pot causing drama. Then these same media members have the nerve to accuse the fans of driving players out of town. Zero respect for Matheson, Spector etc... For context, every Matheson question for days was about Edm's poor goaltending and asking players if the goalies were letting them down or tryin to be cryptic asking "if theres 1 problem with the team what is it?" ps. I see others have explained this exact thing, but I raced to comment cause this angers me as well. Cant stand these entitled reporters.
If i was a player who had to deal with journalist like that i would give the same answer not matter the question. How do you feel after another loss? - Pucks in deep. How do you prepare against a team that is really playing their best hockey of the season? - Pucks in deep. You feel its appropriate to show frustration on the ice? - Pucks in deep.
I truly believe that if players can get fined for giving certain answers, reporters should get fined for certain questions. Why is it ok for them to ask a question, when the answer they want will get the player fined?
As i first heared that i thought the same what leon said "what??" Did he really say that. For me its disrescpectful. You have the right to ask questions but not to get a good answer. I miss the empathy here or at least a bit of feeling for the situation. You handle with humans and not with stories
One of the biggest problems with sports media is sports media over the years they have become entitled and lazy in their reporting. These players owe them nothing and nothing I love to see more is when a player or coach gives them the business.
If it was Daryl Sutter or Tortarella answering a question like that it would be funny, he was being brutally honest, he didn’t want to expand on his explaination
Something to note is while this was a losing streak, I'm pretty sure this was after a practice. So it wasn't even right after a game. It was a slow media day for the Oilers and Jim couldn't have that
big agree, we in Edmonton really don't like Matheson, he asks leading questions that are nearly always negative in one aspect or another, he constantly tries to have one team mate throw another under the bus and his questions are almost never pertinent to the greater situation the team finds itself in, him and specter are just two of the worst guys on our media team

👆👆👆for your surprise package and offer 👉👉@EckHockey
See now that they don’t do the livestreams anymore I missed that but good for him
Hey man I get a bunch of these type of hockey videos come up in my feed but I only ever click on yours. Love your takes on stuff! keep it up!
This interview was hilarious the answers Leon gave were funny af
👆👆👆for your surprise package and offer 👉👉@EckHockey
I was just thinking about this earlier this week. Weird.
lol same
So unprofessional of that reporter 😂 he needs to grow up
So does Leon.
@@8mondaymonkey Well, you know what they say about opinions….
@@happycanayjian1582 he gets paid huge to play a game for our entertainment. Shut up and dribble. What does he think he could do without us or these reporters? Cure cancer? Imma bet no. Entitled little prick......and really really pissy. Don’t go away pissy.....but please go away.
Just imagine the reporter saying that in a closed room with no one around
Less to do with the subject material, but I got into hockey at the start of last season and I found your channel the more I watched hockey. So I would love to see more of your backlog of things you wanted to cover previously! These are so fun to watch!
As an Edmontonian, myself and many other hockey fans follow Oilers media and instagram pages and the memes in the weeks to come after this were hilarious
As an athlete we also have the responsibility to answer the media too. This was a toss up.
These interviews are a complete waist of time. That’s why they are fun. I would be so sarcastic it would make their heads spin. He did a good job.
Honestly, i think press interviews with players is the dumbest thing, in any sport, any player. It's just dumb and pointless. They all give these canned generic answers...waste of everyone's time.
Yup. Non-jobs for which there is no demand.
Most media are ruthless. He handled it perfectly. Crazy, coming from people who probably never played sports
Never saw this clip! Thanks for the old stuff!
Drai handled this perfectly in his second language. What a beast.
Drai took the high road. Respect
Not a fan of the Oilers, but I’m totally on Draisaitl’s side here………..glad he didn’t take the reporters BS.
The interviewer sounds like John Tortorella
he is there to play hockey.. let them play.. this reporter should be fired
18 ?????? My dad stopped asking me that when I was 12.
He just responded with a sarcastic “No, we love that.”
Who hires these people?
He should've just been like.."Wouldn't the world be a better place if you just sat back down and stopped asking questions"
When I first heard it, I thought the reporter asked, "Why are you so "pithy"" because the answers were very short and direct, which seemed semi-appropriate. However, after replaying it several times, I think you and all the other commenters are correct, he did say "pissy". And I agree, that is not very professional. Interesting, that his last question is about LD keeping his cool during a game(his job) when the reporter just let his emotions get the best of HIM in this presser(his job). heh
The entitlement of reporters is just 🤦🏻♂️
Leon handled that perfectly!
I absolutely hate that the players are both a) forced to give these interviews and b) expected to answer them in a specific, on the line way.
"How do you feel about this game?" - how the fuck do you think I feel? Should be a valid and acceptable response.
"Yea it's a great thing" LMAO
Canadians trying to sound angry will always be funny
?
Can you please talk about the interview with Dylan Larkin and Bizz about Dylan Larkin leaving the red wings?
Love you stance on this, i gained a lot of respect for drai after this interview
Professional Hockey player 1 Non-professional acting reporter 0
i got no problem calling someone pissy. that point is null, but the place youre calling a person pissy does matter lmao
‘Why are you so pissy Leon??? 🤣🤣🤣
Draisaitl is hardly a schlub either. Sports journalists can be real d-bags at times.
Matheson was trying to get Leon to call out his goalie and Leon didn't take the bait.
Not an Oilers fan but this really ticked me off as well.
I remember where there was another interview with him last season near the middle where he said something along the lines of "yeah no we won 4 in the past 14 games. it's great" and then he walked away from it, i think
👆👆👆for your surprise package and offer 👉👉@EckHockey
"Yeah you are!" What a prick lmao
i genuinely thought the title said "This interview still pissy me off to this day"
Another Edmonton Journal Oilers writer suggested using sinks as urinals when Rogers Place had a shortage of bathrooms when it was first built.
“Why are you so pissy” HES A HOCKEY PLAYER.
Matheson became a sports journalist to ask "why are you so pissy?"

And your wife is right, he's attractive AF
i love the vids ekk! keep up the great work!
I have always found that watching interviews is painful, no matter how it goes, Dumb questions are asked too often, and it is obvious the players don't want to be there, but have to be to satisfy the media. It could stop tomorrow and I would be happy
So Eck, two questions for you:
1. What is your favourite team?
2. Why is it the Edmonton Oilers?
I remember when I saw this I was thinking the same thing, players have tough nights and get pissed, they don’t have to be nice to the reporters and the reports need to realize that’s all they are, they report on someone else’s life
Same ole Edmonton media playbook, try to get a teammate to throw another teammate or coach under the bus, always stirring the pot causing drama. Then these same media members have the nerve to accuse the fans of driving players out of town. Zero respect for Matheson, Spector etc...
For context, every Matheson question for days was about Edm's poor goaltending and asking players if the goalies were letting them down or tryin to be cryptic asking "if theres 1 problem with the team what is it?"
ps. I see others have explained this exact thing, but I raced to comment cause this angers me as well. Cant stand these entitled reporters.
Id never answer one of his questions again other than a yes or no after this.
"Why are you beint so pissy?"
Yes
"Whos under performing?"
Yes
Matheson: "OMG I can't believe you won't just let me bait you into throwing your teammates under the bus! You're so pissy!"
Love you videos man keep up the great work👍
I truly believe that if players can get fined for giving certain answers, reporters should get fined for certain questions. Why is it ok for them to ask a question, when the answer they want will get the player fined?
clearly that writer NEEDS to be more professional. This is coming from a Sports Journalist myself for 8 years.
Matheson was looking for a quote for his headline and Draisaitl wasn't giving him what he wanted. It was Matheson getting "Pissy".
Congrats on 75k
As i first heared that i thought the same what leon said "what??" Did he really say that. For me its disrescpectful. You have the right to ask questions but not to get a good answer. I miss the empathy here or at least a bit of feeling for the situation. You handle with humans and not with stories
Draisaitl was awesome in this press conference. Dude absolutely embarrassed Matheson!
One of the biggest problems with sports media is sports media over the years they have become entitled and lazy in their reporting. These players owe them nothing and nothing I love to see more is when a player or coach gives them the business.
Your channel will have players watching one day. It's always quality content. Your like the Jomboy of hockey for me.
Very interesting hockey clips are timeless and the more time goes on your able to add more to what it really is
If it was Daryl Sutter or Tortarella answering a question like that it would be funny, he was being brutally honest, he didn’t want to expand on his explaination
Something to note is while this was a losing streak, I'm pretty sure this was after a practice. So it wasn't even right after a game. It was a slow media day for the Oilers and Jim couldn't have that
If he wants to call him pissy to his face, good for him. The issue is whether he's right or wrong to characterize him that way.
big agree, we in Edmonton really don't like Matheson, he asks leading questions that are nearly always negative in one aspect or another, he constantly tries to have one team mate throw another under the bus and his questions are almost never pertinent to the greater situation the team finds itself in, him and specter are just two of the worst guys on our media team
Torts should be in Leons place. He would put that "journalist" in his place.
The face Leon gives Jim is the group chat picture and we still ask each other randomly "why are you so pissy?". Jim made himself infamous in this city and I'm surprised he still has a job considering I don't know anyone that reads his trash pieces.
Leon should’ve just said, “Next question.”
“Why are you so pissy?” I would’nt have given that any answer other than “Next question.”
ye, that's why over here some clubs flat out refuse to talk to certain media outlets.
I like the part where you talk about how the oilers lost this game. Warms the cackles of my heart
Maybe in the sub cackles of our hearts?
When he told him, “That’s a bad answer,” Leon should’ve said, “It’s better than no answer,” or, “Well that’s subjective journalism.”
