  • A remake of Night Slashers was recently shown off, so why not go back and play the original? I am a bit late for the horror-themed month, but I'm going to get back to more consistent uploads now.
This is a pretty good game to start off with. It's not difficult, it looks great and has awesome aesthetics, and it's fun to play despite the ever-present Data East jank. My only real complaints about the game is how you need to carefully inch your way forward at certain points, especially towards the end of the game. Otherwise tons of enemies will be flooding the screen, and they can easily overwhelm you. I'm sure there are some ways around that, like knowing where you can rush forward and press the bomb button to wipe almost everything out (like I do a little after the start of stage 3), but even so, just bypassing the enemies like that isn't particularly fun either. But I still like the game. Its presentation does some heavy lifting for a lot of the design faults, for me at least.
Jake has got to be the strongest character in the game by the way. I think the only really dangerous part (at least for him) is the double boss in stage 4, but even that isn't too hard to get through.

Back when I was a kid, I used to go to a skating rink with neighbors every month or so. One thing they had there, was a small arcade, and in it, was this game. At the time, it was the goriest game I could ever think of, it was constantly being vandalized by parents who didn't want their kids playing it (this was back in the late 90s, when the 'violent vidya games corruptin' tha youth' scare was in full swing) and I loved it, even though I was kinda bad at it and never got past stage 4.
Thanks for this playthrough - I always wondered what I was missing further into the game. Also, that is some *finely aged* boss cheese you pulled off.

How the hell did you do it? I always play as either Chris or Hua and can not get past the 3rd stage( on 1 credit, that is). Chris kills most things in 5 hits and Hong Hua has to use charge moves.

This was a interesting game...a 3D reboot with more cutscenes would've been fun.

They're making a hand drawn remake. Not sure about how it looks.

Nice clear, but shame on you for not playing the Japanese version. Like with Undercover Cops, the music alone is superior, not to mention the complete lack of pointless censorship. The dialogue is infinitely better too... in fact, it just occured to me today that it's pretty difficult to tell whom is even speaking in the American version, whereas in the Japanese one, you know precisely who is because of the different ways Jake (masculine), Christopher (aristocratic) & Hong-Hua (feminine) talk. (^_~)

Yeah, personally, I always prefer to play the Japanese/original version of a game because during this era especially, there was a high chance that the overseas versions were altered. But I figured it'd be better for TH-cam if most people could read the story. At least the alterations for Night Slashers aren't as significant as they are for a lot of other games.

Who cares?! We still had fun with this version.

@@p6mkq Well, fundamentally it is the same game. As with many other localised titles, I suppose if I had played it back in the days of the arcades instead of in MAME years after the fact, I undoubtedly would have agreed with you. Ignorance truly is bliss as they say. (^_^)
