    An Excellent and informative video , Steve .............. need more of these !
    IOn and old pc , and using an AtoD converter , got some software , and showed battery voltage over time , with a resistive load ... not one cell , met the rated cell capacity ............. 9900 mA hrs , is just ridiculous !! well done .

    That protection is there to prevent over-current and over-discharge. That cell probably doesn't have a high enough CDR for vaping. I did this assuming the batteries would be sufficient and the regulator on my mod exploded.

    I didn't realize until it was 2 late I bought a bunch of 18650s and the positive side has a giant nub when compared to my ecig batteries. I truly thought I was getting a good deal and my guess is these are cheap because their uses are limited. I thought maybe I could easily remove that cap but I don't think I can so it means I have to sacrifice one to see if I can or maybe sand the nub back enough for it to fit.

      Steve Brace lol I was just messing about. Thanks for the video...I already did this, I just wanted to see if I did it the correct way. I wouldn't recommend people do this on mechanical mods, though.

    • @SteveBrace

    Slightly altering this method can also be used to turn a protected cell into a solderable cell.
    There have been a few times when I've been able to avoid the high cost of overnight shipping (and make a quick repair) when I desperately needed a SOLDERABLE 18650 cell. On a protected cell, peel or snip off only enough of the interconnecting strap(s) to leave enough as a "stub" sufficient to solder to. Leave intact as many as possible of the original spot-welds. The more original welds the better. Soldering to the strip stub(s) instead of directly to any part of the cell...
    1) MUCH easier to make a fast, much higher quality solder connection to the cell(s),
    2) Helps considerably in preventing internal heat damage to the cell(s) while soldering.
    *WARNING: a solder connection performed by an inexperienced person **_may be INSUFFICIENT_** to handle the high currents found in some vaping equipment or other equipment. This could lead to catastrophic failure of a cell*

      Just realize that the 0v is there for a reason... the battery was put to sleep by the protection circuit... although they can be revived in several ways, the longer the battery stayed in the “0v” sleep state the more unstable it can become (and this instability does not make itself known immediately... it could have issues many charge cycles from now). There are some uses for revived batteries, but vaping is probably the WORST possible use of a revived battery. Battery instability/fire/venting mostly happens during discharge...yeah, that’s right...exactly when the vape is in your mouth... please do not use any revived batteries for that purpose... and always treat revived batteries as suspect.

    So, basically, it is NOT an 18650, (even though it is sold as such), but an 18655, or how ever much longer it is than an 65mm.

    tks for the video, my battery is fairly new but it suddenly stopped working when I used it in parallel with a lousy one, and since then its never recovered its charge, I think I must have damaged the protection circuit and it refuses to charge or dischage since..all protective cells are situated at the negative?

    • @SteveBrace

      I believe there is a mechanical vent trigger on some cells that disconnects the +ve in an over-pressure event.

      tks for the reply steve, I also notice mt battery dont have any split on the negative theres some kind of attachment on the positive, I dont dare meddle with it cos its both fairly new and held strong charges 2.2amp rated ones, I dont want to short them, I tested them before when working on a 10amp ammeter, I blew the needles to the extreme like nothing, so I know they really kick ass when shorted..I threw them away, I think lead acid types are the best cos they tolerate a lot misuse better..

I took off the cells from the casing they were dead I did CID and the voltage increased to 3.7 to 4.2 v in each cell . I used it for my rc plane when I gave full throttle the voltage of battery decreased from 11.7 to 4.5 volt and after sometime it again came to 11.1volt .whenever I give load on these batteries their voltage decrease and gradually increase when there is no load .Please help

    Great info. Can you tell me if I can replace a 3.6 volt-1800ah rechargeable LED work lamp battery with a 3.7 volt-3000ah battery without harming the LED? The battery length is not critical. Thank you kindly.

    • @SteveBrace
      @SteveBrace  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. The answer to your question depends very much on the power supply to the LED. If it is regulated, then the LED will be fine, however if it is only current limited by a resistor, then that 0.1v increase will increase the LED current and therefore temperature thereby reducing the lifespan.

    • @Peter.Sky.Walker
      @Peter.Sky.Walker 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmmm, 18650's are usually charged up to 4.2 volts then can be safely discharged to around 3 volts. If your LED light charger will only charge a battery up to 3.6, that won't be a problem at all; that's actually a good thing. The only problem would be that you could potentially drain the 18650 down past 3 volts, which could damage the 18650.

      +Saeber Tooth Thanks! At the last count there were 20 videos in the Steve'll Fix It playlist... Subscribe for updates. As for replacing cells in laptop battery packs; this is very difficult without causing damage since they are usually glued. In order to open the case without damage you need to apply heat and if there's one thing Li-Ion cells dislike, apart from a short circuit, it's heat!

    This blue one is technically a battery (which is cell + protective circuits, enclosure and stuff), while the others are just bare cells.
    And saying "bare cells" may not be 100% correct, because many cells does have internal protection, usually PTC, sometimes fusible links, but these are regarded as part of cell. Anyway - Lets just hope that all people are aware of dangers of using lithium cells instead of batteries, especially not brand name ones, as those little things can cause serious damage when they decide to go off...

    • @SteveBrace
      @SteveBrace  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +mibars A battery is a group of cells. External circuitry on a cell does not a battery make.

    • @mibars
      @mibars 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Brace Depends on point of view. From physical point of view - yes, but for the purpose of safety evaluation cell is a component of a battery. This sometimes leads to situation where battery is just a single cell with added markings when a cell is safe enough to pass battery tests.

    People need to know what they are doing before attempting this, cells USUALLY come protected for a reason, short an unprotected cell and they will thermally runaway, potentially catching fire.
    However, with that out of the way, if you are using the cells in a device that has it's own protection, using protected cells will lead to HORRIBLE performance, as you have 2 separate current regulations going on at once, leading to substantially worse performance than it should be delivering. It can also screw with cell balancing at lower than 3.7v, substantially chopping the top off your usable battery life.
    Although it isn't 'dangerous' to use protected cells in devices with their own protection, you still shouldn't do it, unless you don't care about your device performing sub-optimally. The only REAL use for these protected cells are in primitive electronics, like flashlights, which directly short the battery across a bulb, or in mechanical vaping devices which also work exactly like a flashlight, only shorting across a heating coil instead of a bulb. Vaping device with voltage regulation perform like absolute dog shit if the cells are protected, that is, if you can even get a protected cell to fit inside in the first place... They seem to intentionally make the clearance too tight to even get them to fit in the first place, most of the time.
    So yeah, your vaping device has intentionally made itself incompatible with protected cells, for your own good. Even if you could get the cell in there, it would perform horribly, as it is doing it's own regulation.

    • @iShionSinX
      @iShionSinX 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, protected cells arent meant to be used on protected devices. That is also why is fine to use those unprotected, or removing the protection, when you are using on something which alredy has protection, like those new cheap power bank circuits.

    These batteries are something to watch out for, my reasons shall be listed with explanation
    The plastic wrapping should be in VERY good condition, because the wrap actually keeps the negative side sealed in
    Don't overcharge your battery, a day might be safe but it's not wise
    Watch out for REWRAPS these are junk batteries that look real, but aren't even close, buy from trusted sources
    PAIR YOUR BATTERIES make sure you pair, or marry your batteries (long explanation, check a 3 min vid or internet search on that and edjumicatiom (educate) yourself
    Never over do your batteries, mech mods (unregulated) aren't for people that can't guarantee safety, buy a regulated mod to be safer, battery explosions are mostly common through mech mods where the battery is abused or ohm's law is abused

    just one question asking for a long time with many people but no one give satisfactory reply. I hope you can come up to the best to solve my concern and share the info with others as well.
    My question: i have a laptop battery of 6 cells of 18650 series, can i increase my cells by soldering three or six cells more because of this reason to increase the backup time.
    I have no issue if cells are coming out of battery jacket, Can the 6 battery cells chip board found in the battery can control the 9 or more cells at the same time without infected to laptop.

    • @SteveBrace

      I would not recommend this as the balanced charging circuit would not work effectively. As laptops are usually left to charge unsupervised this would pose an unacceptable risk.

    • @GearGuy
      @GearGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In addition to what steve said, battery cells in series should definitely be impedance matched...which means you need to disconnect existing cells to check thier individual impedance (to match it)...same true for capacity.. both should be within 10% of existing batteries. Lookup “cell matching of lithium ion cells” for more info.

      Not very easily or efficiently, no... You need to cap the voltage at 4.2v and limit the current to the maximum charge specified for the cell. A cheap, adjustable (I&V) switch-mode buck converter would work though.

    Yeah, Power cells are available, but Is that possible ??

    • @SteveBrace
      @SteveBrace  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nasr Awan Yes it is possible. Two cells in series and a 5v regulator (plus a heatsink and two or three caps) would provide a steady 5v but it would be inefficient. A single cell and a boost converter would be more efficient, but more expensive and since you can buy single cell power banks for £1/$1 it really isn't cost effective, especially if you factor-in the charging circuitry.

    do all protected cells have 2 layers of insulation?

    • @SteveBrace
      @SteveBrace  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +micheals1992 I would assume so since there has to be a high current conductor passing the entire length of the cell. There may be exceptions.

    • @micheals1992
      @micheals1992 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's just that I've got some protected cells (they claim they're anyway) that don't seem to have a protection circuit on the negative. they wouldn't fit in my power bank but I used some pliers on the power bank to squash the positive tabs flat and I can now fit them in and my unprotected flat tops still make a good connection because of the springs :)
      The reason I was asking was that I always thought it would make more sense to put the protection circuit on top because there's already a negative terminal right next to it so it would remove the danger of running a positive strip all the way along the side of the negative casing (which could get damaged and short and there's no protection in between that kind of short circuit)

    • @SteveBrace
      @SteveBrace  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +micheals1992 You make some good points, but we're dealing with legacy c20th technology. If these cells were designed today, there would be no way any sane person would give these cells type approval IMO ! :)

    • @micheals1992
      @micheals1992 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it seems like a protected cell could have the potential to be more dangerous then an unprotected cell if it was damaged. but over/undercharge and short protection are good things to have if they're using them in consumer electronics and EVs.
      Do brand new protected cells still have their protection circuits on the bottom?

    • @SteveBrace
      @SteveBrace  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +micheals1992 The 18650 and derivatives were never designed for consumer use. They were for encapsulated modules (like laptop batteries) where external protection was expected of the manufacturer. The single cell protection was added in the 21st century as an attempt to make them usable for consumers, probably driven by the e-cig trade (may your deity bless them!) It most certainly does not make them safer in the event of mechanical damage!
