  • We converted a 1999 Toyota Hiace Commuter into a dream home on wheels. This walkthrough explains the key features of our build and how "Tracy Chapvan" went from being a detailing panel van to a majestic S.O.B.

    Brilliant job! I've the same year and model, so can appreciate the finer points in this. I removed the full size bed in mine and put in a single, giving me much more storage for life on the road. Those window sliders really took my eye. Wish you two would do more videos, great camera presence😁👍

    I love the book shelf idea at the back and will definitely be doing something similar in my commuter so thank you!

    Boy you and your Dad did an awesome job. Like the carpentry especially out the back. I have a hitop too and roof racks were very very difficult to find. Really like what you did there

      Hi, You can purchase the roof racks from roof rack world. Not cheap.

    Hi, when the engine is under the front seat how do you build cupboards behind if you ever need to get to the engine?

      Please reply - I want to know too!!

      There is nothing obstructing the seat from lifting to get to the engine. The wall that's constructed is similar to having a cargo barrier. Hope this helps.

    Great design! It’s actually my main inspiration for my van build. Just a couple of questions:
    Is having the electrical system behind the drivers seat a problem at all? I’ve read the inverter can get hot too quickly when in the cabin, and also you don’t have access to it from the back of the van, right?
    Do you keep all your kitchenware in that sliding drawer?
    I love you window system. Was it hard to make?
    Thank you!!!

      Hi, And thank you. The electrical system behind the seat has been ok no problems. As for the sliders on the windows, yes there a great idea but if I had to do it again I would insert aluminium channels for the sliders as I did not account for the timber expanding and contracting. Hope this helps.

    Give n me lots ofd ideas - I'm building my own commuter. Question about the wonderful bulkhead. I'd like to build a floor to ceiling bulkhead, but that would stop access to the battery compartment under the passenger seat. When I lift the passenger seat, it tilts back into the cargo space. Any thoughts?

    Hi lads - I expect you are off grid but if you could share the plan for the bulkhead I would be eternally grateful

    Love your camper van very much, I also want to convert one myself, because I like to travel, but I don't have a production license, can I do it myself? Will the Australian police or RTA trouble me? If you know, can you tell me? Thanks!

    • @stallion1369
      @stallion1369 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can build yourself but you have to follow the Australian guidelines for campers.
