- I'm really excited to bring this collaboration video with a great nightscape photographer to you. John Rutter is a fellow Australian photographer who specializes in large milky way tracked panoramas. John was scouting locations at Lake Tyrrell in north west Victoria and invited me to join him for a night under the stars.
In this video we'll show you how we found some subjects to shoot in the district and what challenges we faced in the process. We'll also go over the differing methods we used to shoot our nightscapes.
Make sure you follow John's great youtube channel listed below.

Great video Richard. It is interesting to see the differences in how you approach the subject. I must admit, the light painting really makes a difference. As ever, I am envious that you have such brilliant locations there. Keep up the good work.

Well worth the wait😉

Great results with your images Richard and John. As you know Richard, I've just been at Lake Tyrrell with John and Dan Zafra and we had perfect skies and captured some crisp images. Unfortunately, I didn't make it to the bus. Next time! A welcome collaboration between you and John and Baillie. 😎👍😁
Thanks Geoff. It's a big place .. lots to explore. Some really nice trees along the raised edges of the lake as well.
Whoowww fantastico! Complimenti!!!! 👏👏👏👏 le tue immagini sono poesia 🙏
Thanks so much for watching.
Absolutely cracking images. Awesome stuff guys 🌌
You'll have to get up there at some stage Dominic . .it's quite surreal at the lake.
@@nightscapeimages.richard 100%, could spend a month up that way and still not run out of targets.
Very true @@AstroRoad
Hi Richard
I really enjoyed this video, very interesting seeing how you and John shot the same subject in your own unique ways. How good is Lake Tyrell😉
Yes it's amazing up there Julie. Thanks again for watching.
Love John's work also, follow you both on here & Instagram! Great to see you both together in one vlog!

Thanks so much for watching
My favourite guys. Sign me up for your combined workshop! LOL
Haha, you'd never get home from that one Kim ..!!!
Wow Richard - such an epic adventure and great to see John featured in your video. The images were sublime as always - the lighting on both the bus and car shots was totally next level mate 👏👏 Your explanations on how you captured the shots are clear and easy to follow - if my results were only half this good, I'd be a happy man ha ha 😀 All the best 👍
Thanks so much for watching Brian. I always appreciate your comments mate.
Great shooting 👌 fabulous to catch you and John in the same video. I met John at Catherine Hill Bay when some twit was shining a high power torch on the jetty so he could focus and bugger all other photographers who were shooting. John and I had a funny discussion about this guy 😂 Love all images, but my stand out would have to be the first of the bus with light painting. WOW!
Thanks for your very kind words David, really appreciated.
Great video Richard 🖖
Many thanks indeed Gavin
Wonderful video Richard, great to see you teaming up with another icon John Rutter. Great to see the contrasting takes on the same subjects by the two of you, absolutely love your old car shot. Was, cloudy, windy and raining when I stopped at sea lake last week, so decided to catch up on some sleep but definitely on the list of spots to revisit.
Thanks a lot Eric. Yes I was thinking of you that night when the rain came down. An excuse for another road trip ..!!!
👍👍👍😍😍
been waiting for a collab between you 2
Hope you enjoyed it Steve.
fa-bus-lous 🤣 Great post!
I'm so pleased you enjoyed it.
what an amazing area also for daily light adventures. Lovely footage from the air. Would be nice to see a panorama from your drone. Greedings from switzerland
Thanks so much for watching. Yes I should do more drone photography. . it was a busy day and night up there.
As always, love your images Richard! {A post processing video showing your PS sky replacement and how you go about it would be nice! Always a tip a two here is invaluable.}

Absolutely stunning as ever Richard 🙏. I was shooting there two weeks ago on a whistle stop tour of the region... ships in the night 😂. Have a great week 🙏🙏🙏
It's often like that Izzy. It is a pretty popular spot that's for sure.

Wow,wow, wow. Stunning images and that power pole! Wonderful collaboration and love your enthusiasm and excitement Richard.
You're very kind as always Dianne. Thanks so much for watching.
Wow, what a treat guys! 🇦🇺 🇦🇺 Superb images from both of you (will have to check out Baillie’s too); amazing how you can make such wonderfully different images from the same location. Thanks for sharing, Richard.
Thanks as always for watching Paul. It was a delight to spend time with these guys. Everyone always has a different point of view and the variety is as they say . ."the spice of life" !!!!
Amazing images Richard. John has a new follower. Aiming to try some shots next new moon. Also need to get back to this lake for some photography. As usual your videos motivate me to get out and shoo!t :)
Thanks so much for tuning in Joel. I can imagine you'd do some great drone shots up at Lake Tyrrell.
Awesome results from both of you guys. Really nice to see what clear skies can yield as for us in the UK this is something that we are really hoping to experience some day!!!
Thanks for watching Thanos. We do have very clear and dark skies in this part of the world.
Fantastic video Richard, and totally mind blowing photos, loved them all and its amazing how you can make even a telephone pole look great. This is always a great way to start a weekend, seeing how much enjoyment you get, making such wonderful art. Kickoff is soon so about to watch the All Blacks in the semi, have a wonderful weekend and thank you for being you.
Good on you Rob. Yes it's always something I enjoy to make ordinary things appear awesome somehow .. all the best to the All Blacks mate.
You are both legends here in the US. So glad you got together for this fun night and shared your efforts with all of us!
I'm really pleased you enjoyed the video Andrea, I appreciate your comments.
Boy this was good. Loved the discussion about the how's and why's and then the awesome results, which were noticeably different. Great teaching, Richard, especially for this family just recently starting out on their Astro Photography journey. Particularly loved the telegraph pole image. Outback Australia, love it.
Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement Joan. Really appreciate you watching.
I am so jealous of you guys. Looks like Australia has tons of interesting subjects in the vastness with little to no light pollution. No wonder you make so many awesome shots. Greetings from Europe!
Yes we do have many places to shoot at night in very dark locations. Appreciate you watching.
WOoOW Richard absolutely stunning location and images
I think u have two 100% candidates for your 2025 calendar 😍
The bus and the wreck are sooo great.
Is this location far away from your home?
Cant remember having seen that one before.
greetings
Thanks as always for your kind words my friend. It's about a 2 hour drive from home for me but I rarely visit there.
Great video Richard! This first shot of the bus and MW is just jaw dropping - the lighting in the bus and the sky details are just fantastic! was that a 20mm perspective? The following shots are great as well, but this one is just crazy. A collaboration video is great as well, always a good idea to have one more pro photographer to learn from.
Thanks so much Alex. Yes that's a 20mm perspective for the foreground and a 35mm panorama for the tracked sky. John's work is absolutely amazing.
Great video and photos. Love Lake Tyrell. Question though. Where is the bus? Have only ever been to the jetty!
Thanks for watching Megan. The bus is on the eastern side of the lake just off the Robinvale Sea Lake Road.
@@nightscapeimages.richard thanks!
Such a fabulous comparison between your techniques. Your light painting results are always next level - despite knowing exactly what you do mine never seem as good. The mixed focal lengths work so well, especially when you have a prominent, close foreground subject. Curious if it was a conscious decision not to display your settings on the images as you do usually - I'm sure we all know them now anyway😊?
Thanks as always for watching Greg. Light painting is an will always vary from shot to shot. I figured I'd already discussed the setting enough in the talk previously .. but I know a lot of people really appreciate the settings on each image . .as you do so well also.
Loved those images from both of you, how did you get on with lighting and shooting at the same time?
Thanks Suzie. We shot them one after the other .. although we did shoot the sky at the same time.
Another great video. I just tried my first panorama using a Star Tracker, but without a pano head. APS-C format camera and either 20 or 35mm lens. So my rows travel in an arc, except the foreground which I could shoot without the tracker- making getting a decent result much harder. Would a pano head solve this issue? If not, how do I get flat/ horizontal rows???
Thanks so much for watching Mark. When I shoot tracked panoramas I use one of the Move Shoot Move "Alyn Wallace" V-Mounts. With this I can mount a ball head on a flat surface which makes it a lot easier to keep the camera level. It will eventually get out of level as the mount follows the stars, but you can make minor adjustments as you go to fix that. See what I use here: at about 13.30 th-cam.com/video/qeYrxtaKd3Q/w-d-xo.html
www.moveshootmove.com/products/z-v-platform-designed-with-alyn-wallace-preorder
Thanks for the fast response. I am now back in civilisation so could check the link! I have a similar Z-adapter but el-cheapo with an Allen key that works from the inside🥴. It looks like I need to invest in Alyn’s version, as my current one loosens as soon as I look away… I’ll test it when home again at 61deg north to see what results I can get, before returning to Oz - hopefully next Milky Way season…🤞
Just on that .. I prefer the V adaptor to the Z adaptor. A little less movement a or flex.@@markcompton1249
Tx Richard, as far as I can see the main advantage of the Z is that it can be tilted in both directions, for foreground and higher elevation multi-row shots. 🤔 It would be nice if the bottom of it was a dovetail fitting so it could be secured directly into the tracker head.
John, May I ask what indexing panorama head you are using
Hopefully John see's your question David . .he was still on the road til recently. You could check out this video of his: th-cam.com/video/ig5nd5pxLiE/w-d-xo.html John lists his gear underneath the video.
Fantastic video Richard, great to see two legends together. Awesome images guys.
I really appreciate you watching Dennis.
