Wow Tarantino's response to critics saying he stole from City On Fire is amazing. That's a true artist's response. What a smart, grounded dude all the way from the beginning. That confidence is what makes him and his stuff so powerful, to me at least.

Harvey Keitel was also in Ridley Scott's "The Duellists" and nailed the character perfectly.

He was indeed fantastic in that. Didn't even have any staged combat experience at all (his own admission). But obviously, the training for the scenes and his experience as a confident actor paid off. Ridley's direction of that film was perfect as well.
As an FYI, my background was in saber fencing (12 medals, and I instructed for a decade or so).

I was a kid in Jr high in Salt Lake City when Reservoir Dogs played at Sundance (ten miles up the mountain in Park City). One of my friend's cool older brothers scored a bootleg vhs tape of the movie--I think it was just recorded it from a showing in the Park City theater, because the sound sucked, the screen jumped around, and a couple times everything went totally black, probably because whomever was filming suddenly had to hid the camera. Even still my friends and I watched that tape hundreds of times and made copies of it for anyone who asked, each one slightly lower quality than the last. RD was a revelation, like someone made the exact movie we had always wanted to see, and we declared that no film would ever top it...then Pulp Fiction came out.

I was educated in Fine Arts & one of the topics put forward was that it is...in then-present day (early 80's) Fine Art and earlier in Art History virtually impossible to create a wholly origional work which did not in some way ~ conscious or unconsciously ~ reference an earlier individual work/artist/genre.
The arguement was, if you are indeed an artist: and of the MANY definitions of "ART" the single definition which resonates with truth for me is thus: "Art is that which makes you (the individual member exposed to the work) FEEL INTENSELY STRONG EMOTION. The prof explained this is not necessarily "positive" emotions...but to be meaningful it MUST MAKE YOU FEEL.
It is, he, the best professor I ever studied under, explained, the facet of ART which elevates a piece with perhaps, technically brilliant work from CRAFT to HIGH ART. If the inidividual artist lacks PASSION ~ passion which likely drew the artist to a creative field ~ their work is arguably NOT HIGH ART as it LACKS the emotion imbued by one who cares deeply and LOVES their process.
The emotion INFUSED in a work of ART: be it one of the historic caregories of high visual art, in the field of dance, or music, or other developing art forms (such as how certain games are transcendently beautiful and evoke INTENSE EMOTIONS: a Souls boss fight wherein the character design, movement, audio, music and every lovingly created detail combines to MAKE YOU FEEL intense emotion) each work capable of making YOU FEEL is YOUR ART.
TARANTINO LOVES MOVIES. You can NOT watch an interview or sound bite and not know his passion is unfeigned and genuine.
Those who criticized him, by this definition of ART were deeming his work ART as they were DRIVEN TO FEEL INTENSE EMOTION ~ albeit negative ~ as a result of his WORK. True artists fight to have their VISION uncompromised by those with power over them: they refuse to yield and have the courage and authenticty to refuse to diminish their work, however intense the pressure to do so.
One clear example of this in Fine Art is how Artists depicted imbred monarchs genetic weaknesses...and such comissioned works were loved by the subjects as the artists knew to take great care on the trappings of their ostentatious wealth and power. The works are LAUGHABLY and unambiguously HARSH CRITICISMS of this class of society: as the gentic inferioriotities are BLATANTLY OBVIOUS. If such SUBJECTS were as INTELLIGENT as the ARTSISTS they would have FELT what the intended audience FEELS when the TRUTH of their weaknesses were so accurately portrayed. Such works do not engender feelings of respect for the subjects but rather DISRESPECT and intensely NEGATIVE emotions, as was the INTENT of the ARTIST.
    ART will out.

The ear cutting scene was brutal but absolutely necessary for driving the plot. At first, it seems like we're just seeing violence for violence sake but when Mr Orange kills Mr Blonde we're happy the cop is saved but its also revealed that Mr Orange is the rat. However by this time its already been revealed that although Mr Blonde is a psychopath, hes a loyal one. This is something Orange didnt know or count on, and its why Nice Guy Eddie didnt buy his story at the end. So the torture scene was a pivotal point in the story and it had to be brutal enough to create the tension and release it did to propel the other characters responses.

Didn't the script for True Romance already get picked up by a studio before Tarantino even started filming Reservoir Dogs? Like I distinctly remember Tarantino saying he used the money from selling True Romance to buy equipment to film a demo for Reservoir Dogs, which probably included the scenes with Steve Buscemi that he took to the Sundance Festival. Point being that the success of Reservoir Dogs isn't what got eyes on True Romance, although maybe it helped get film production greenlit.

Exactly right, that's what I read happened.

    • @pydekki

Yes, Tarantino had sold the True Romance script to Tony Scott for around 30 000 dollars, but instead of just a demo, his plan was to shoot the whole film with that money on black and white 16mm with himself and his friends as the actors. Producer Lawrence Bender was supposed to be in one of the lead roles, but he wanted to make the film more professionally. Tarantino gave Bender something like three weeks to get financing for the project, and if he couldn't, they would just make the film on the original budget. Bender got the script to Harvey Keitel and that got them the 1.5 million budget.
The "demo scenes" with Buscemi were part of the Sundance Institute Labs training in June 1991, when they already had the money and cast in place. Reservoir Dogs started shooting the next month.

Reservoir Dogs is a gay masterpiece, brimming with unspoken male man-lust.
Gore Vidal wrote the final screenplay and it's better than Ben Hur.

RD has not aged that well, feels kind of Naff ( a bit crap) now although has still has some charm to it. Pulp Fiction , however has gotten better and better with age.
If you had asked me in the late 90's/early 00's I would have said RD was the better film, now I would say Pulp Fiction is and its not even close.
Besides RD is "City on Fire"(1987) re imagined with US actors instead of Chinese. It even uses a lot of the same visual direction in places

Reservoir dogs had some great actors in it, but as a movie I don't see anything special in it. I guess because it Quentin got a lot of attention. Just a lot of violence - no special story - its all been done before. Wasn't there a Bogart film where the gang had an embedded cop?

How can people not wrap their heads around this; everyone in 'The Biz' that want the success fame and notoriety, mostly're, always about tryin' to bring somebody down, in hopes by doin' so they'll get to fill that gap they created after ruining somebody's day, life and career. But the destroyer is so uptight from the stress, pressure and anxiety, from the day in and day out struggles trying to make it, trying to be seen, or, trying to get discovered--as it is VERY MUCH akin to making it in pro sports, NASCAR, the theater, novelist, dancer, the music industry, video games, and, nearly every creative big dream job, or artistic endeavor--it really is, ALMOST, like hitting the lottery in LOTS of ways except it isn't completely luck nor how talented you might be at least entirely, for, it really is as they say despite how cliché this saying has become, though "to become a 'true' 'star,' it truly entails something like divine intervention and stars having to align not only just right but just right at the correct time"--AND, so many people trying to break out are simply unable to grasp it just must not be in the cards for them. Same with an inability to have children or find a mate they can grow old and die with. Please, do not take this as discouragement you should try, 'cause at least then you'll be able to live with yourself knowing THAT YOU GAVE IT YOUR ALL, and, I am also not saying you should give it up a point, sometime in your life either, certainly by all means, never give in, but, don't allow it to destroy you, either, or consume ALL that you know or that you are. If it didn't work out, do something else for a while, maybe go back to the drawing board, to hone or work on a few things then, later, give it another shot, that first shot can't ruin you because maybe it wasn't YOUR TIME, but the next time might BE... God, or the universe or whatever, has a weird way of working out that way. Perhaps it simply is that you want IT too bad...Ever heard the saying(s) "You'll find love THE SECOND you stop looking or when least expecting to find it"? That isn't ALWAYS TRUE, but, it IS a surprisingly amount of the time...my point of this ranting is that it is just as important to keep all of your options open, as it is to keep up drive, or dedication, or ambition, or continuing to work on your craft--anyway! sorry for the "little" detour, haha, but to get back on a track wherever I was headed up above in the beginning--but helpin to bring down a person not deserving to fill in will almost never work just bad karma ju-ju whatever you want to call it, a bad vibe, a bad look or bad luck, God and the universe always will respond better by way of love--"You'll catch more flys with honey than vinegar" or "bees" if you prefer, or with YOU smart aleck shithead lol--but the much BETTER route will always be through love and/or honest praise, not sucking up or blowing smoke up someone's ass, but, genuinely offered respectful non-insane fan-boying out, as, not only is that much more likely to work, maybe you have chemistry, and the person whose time for success then might bring you along, for the next wave of their, then, both of your, sucess(es). IT seems lots of comedians struggle WITH this very thing, too, as many look back in hindsight with regrets about it. And what I think the main thing about it actually is, you will sleep a whole lot better, will then be able to look yourself in the mirror and be able to stand yourself, a lot more, this way, taking the high road, and, the better man's (or woman's) way! Unless...that is, of course, you are a psychotic sociopath without a conscience, or soul, and you're ability to care is slim to nil or phoney, AT BEST--which there are way more of these than most people KNOW or like to admit, both, in The Biz, as well as CEO's or ANY position of power!--but, let's be honest as none of them would care taking the time to try and read or slog through all this, at ALL anyway, they're all too busy screwin' over their employees or hookers or living double lives covering their tracks of bein' serial killers or what have you haha... SO there you have IT! To make it you START with talent, drive, ambition, curiosity, but, it also takes luck, and proper timing, ALL these truly aligning all at once. Hence, IT REALLY IS all but completely beyond our control, though we can have a hand in IT, in our own fate or destiny... Spread LOVE never HATE! Hate only breeds more hate, cancer, and ulcers, lol. This has been my PSA for the day haha! BE KIND TO EACH OTHER OKAY CHILDREN?! PEACE OUT!!!

Whoops! I just came back once I had realized I'd completely flubbed what I originally had set OUT to comment... Quickly derailing myself and I NEVER brought IT BACK around to, whatever original message I MEANT to deliver. Though everything I'd mentioned was good stuff, too, so it's FINE. But, what Quentin DOES with film is, essentially, exactly the same as, (such and such), musician(s) does(do) whenever ONE, occasionally DOES, get their big time BREAK from a cover song version the band didn't write, originally, but THEIR version's what gets recognized, MORE than the original ONE, and WE ARE all basically fine with THIS, but, for SOME reason, in another medium, it's not ok! LIKE how DMB, Dylan, and Hendrix, all have had GREAT versions of "All Along the Watchtower," to varying degrees of success, throughout different times, in both linear time AND THEIR CAREERS. What Quentin does though is different, slightly, CLOSER TO Eminem's "Sing for the Moment," USING (or borrowing) the chorus of "Dream On," by Aerosmith, or him or other rappers doing REMIXES or SUCH to varying degrees. But maybe a closer example, would possibly be, say, Alien Ant Farm's, "Smooth Criminal," IN IT'S, basically, ripping off of the King of Pop's music and videos, and we for the most part were and are fine with that! I will still jam that ish from time to time! What's the bloody difference?! Nothing! That's what! phew! I feel so so so much better, now, that I have come back HERE and gotten all of that out! LmMFaO!
