In all honestly, I love the old way the ride was themed. It was how I rode it as a kid and I loved every second of it (while unintentionally learning things). The real life implications of it and the industrial theming really interested me for some reason, more than the Tron-style theme does now.
Secret Tip: If you/someone in your group is a GM employee, they have a lounge you can hang out in inside the building that the ride wraps around. Drinks and snacks, a space to sit and watch the cars whip around the building on the track below you with a great view of the park, and the whole "design your car" thing that has a time limit when you are in the regular que...yeah, they have a booth in the lounge where you can sit there for hours if you want optimizing your vehicle design. That GM badge also acts as a fast pass so you get into the ride without waiting in line. Highly recommend this method.
I miss the old environmental test chambers. BTW, if you look at the pathway and especially the planters underneath the outside track in front of the ride building, you can find lots of black rubber strips and pieces. Those are pieces of the tires that constantly are shred off during the high-speed part of the ride. Free Disney ride collectible for you :)
The track itself is pretty interesting. It is surfaced with the same gray stuff they use on aircraft carriers. The reason is it has the same drag coefficient dry or wet. I actually walked the track with the Imagineers before it opened; that was an experience I'll never forget!
@@SWIFTO_SCYTHE It was so long ago, while it was under construction. I went with a group of engineers from IEEE. One of the Imagineers had posted the event and I signed up. It was really cool getting to park behind Epcot and walking the track as it was being put together. Many of the scenes were there, like the truck you almost run into.
I too got to walk the track before it opened. My dad works in the film and commercial industry and he got hired on as a gaffer (lighting department) to help film a commercial for GM on Test Track - sort of a cross-promotion between GM and the new Test Track attraction. We all flew to Orlando, and on one of the days, I actually got hired on to help my dad with some menial tasks, including working a breaker box to turn the heat lamps in the environmental tunnel on and off while they were shooting that scene. In our down time, I got to walk the entire length of the interior track, looking around at all the props and stuff. Remember, this is back when it was themed as a GM test track facility, so it had a very industrial feel. Lots of prop toolboxes, tools, tires, crash test dummies, etc. were everywhere. I always remember that, however random and "scattered around" everything looked, if you went up and tried to grab it, it was all secured down. Nothing could actually move. Going through all the little back-stage areas and shortcuts to get from one part of the ride to the other was awesome. It was an experience I'll never forget.
Thanks for adding this. I'm a retired engineer and I'm always fascinated by the technology in the rides. Mr. Slippy There is a lot more complicated mechanisms that work that give this hang glider simulator ride a true perfect illusion of hang gliding; if Amusement Labs were to make a video of this you would be blown away with everything you see and hear with How Soarin’ Works!
I remember a version of this where it tested with and without abs brakes for instance, swerving round cones etc. guess that was the old test track, pretty awesome ride then.
Great review. I got a chance to talk to one of the Imagineers who created this ride back in the day. They had the hardest time designing an electric engine to power the car tethered to the rail system shown here. The rail was not the hard part - getting the motor to do the work was the hard part. Some of GM's technology was leveraged for that part of the ride as they helped some with motor problems that was described when Disney took over development of the ride. You are completely correct with the 8 car limit initially. It was what killed the original contractor and forced Disney to take over. This ride is pretty amazing when you realize what had to go into it to make it work.
I went around 2006(I was 11) I never went before and this was one of my favorite rides, sad to see they took out the original look before I was able to go back :c first time I went I was in line seeing the videos of test crashes and thought we were going to really die, I was crying haha. But after I realized we weren't going to die it became a favorite of mine. Now I have a twin turbo 300zx that I've gone 160mph in 😂 I love cars. Thanks for making this video!
When I worked at the Test Track sponsored by GM. It was the ride more cast members wanted to work, Because it was so much fun the turn over was small. The experience I had working every position was awesome. I look forward to seeing the changes and trying to hear stories from the current cast members. (mostly from those at the greeter position.)
I remember when the opening for this was delayed. Again. And again. And again. And again. And again. I think it opened a good 2 or more years after it was supposed to. Tons of issues. I’ve also been on it during repeated power failures.
As a former Epcot Cast Member I use to constantly watch them rolling the cars off the track, onto this buggy thing into a separate garage where they'd replace the tires. Even that buggy thing they rolled the cars out from the original ride track still had the complex layout for the mechanism underneath!
My siblings still have never been on this. Every time we go, we rope drop the park, but it always starts to rain when we get up to the attraction, and it shuts down for the day due to “technical difficulties”. Really banking on it being open this summer, but I’m not holding my breath...
I love this the ride the most at Epcot, literally my favorite park at Disneyworld. I hope more rides will have futuristic add-one or aesthetic , maybe they will update the old fashioned aesthetics
I was part of the test and adjust team for this ride. What a nightmare, nothing worked and we had several major crashes/incidents. Luckily it got so far behind I got to work Horizons for a while too and what a gem of a ride that was. I know rides have to be replaced after so long but it sure sucks loosing some of the ones you grew up with. The new version of Test Track does not live up to the original idea, nor does the queue which was amazing.
Great video. As a kid I always remembered the high speed section being so much faster than what it actually was. Felt like we hit 100 mph for some reason. Was so disappointed the last time we went to see we only actually hit 65 mph. But great experience overall.

The actual phrase would be considered in rides at universal and islands of adventure like the incredible hulk, velocicoaster, or rip ride rock it. Can’t wait at all. Btw the 3d print files for rise of the resistance and all the free ride models aren’t showing up. Just thought I should bring that up while I’m here.
I miss old test track such great imagineering is gone. it used to be educational and fun and now it's generic. still a good attraction but knowing what it could be it's frustrating they made the decision to retheme.
A few comments: 1) Why did this ride succeed while Rocket Rods was quickly closed? 2) Homes typically don't get three phase power -- a final step-down transformer taps a single phase, although it spits out two 180 degree out-of-phase lines. This essentially gets you +120v and -120v (in the US... and ignoring the fact that this is AC power), giving you 120v for most outlets, or 240v across the two "phases" for ovens, dryers, water heaters, etc. 3) I'd love to see a video on Disneyland's Indiana Jones ride. AFAIK it's fairly unique.
The tires have a much longer life span. When the ride first opened it was less than a week. Disney had to contract out to a tire company to create a custom tire that lasts longer. Now a set will last about a month but seeing how they're custom made I don't think they'd have any practical recycling options besides trying to send the tires back to be used as raw materials for a future set.
Your video are alwas well made and we'll explained for as conplexs as they are I do Wich had a bit more of a deeper dive in to this ride similar to harbor Express rid but I really do enjoy theas video
I believe the code is BUSTER. That second E was a tough one to spot! As for the longest line that was worth the wait, that personally goes to Avatar Flight of Passage in Animal Kingdom. I waited 5 hours for it, and I'd do it again. Got a free fastpass for it as well!
I love you videos. They’re always informative and never disappoint. Thanks so much for making these. (BTW, twelfth comment, for those of you who are counting.)
Did they update the ride system at all for Radiator Springs Racers at California Adventure? I assume not, since you used some B-roll footage from a behind the scenes special of that ride, but I was curious nonetheless :-)
Tell me if I am wrong but doesnt 3 phase power require 5 different bus bars. If its just three then I am pretty sure thats single phase. Once again tell me if I am wrong but you need a bus bar for each hot (so three different hots) one for the neutral and one for ground.
While you're in the queue, what's all that stuff they ask you to program to make the car "your" car. As if I had designed the test parameters or whatever. Seems to not really make a difference to the ride experience. What do you say?
It doesn't make a difference. It's just a fun little thing they added. Nothing changes, it's the same ride profile, but your car comes up on the screen when the car passes the reader.
It felt like that space mountain, big thunder mountain, tower of terror, slinky dog, and the 50 foot drop on splash mountain, all feel way faster than test trap especially space mountain
Anyone know if this ride has any plans in the future, I'm planning a visit to Disney in 2025 (if the US survive Covid19 and Disney doesn't shutdown before that due to lower tourism) and I would love to know this ride would still be there or not, its one of my favourite at Epcot along with Soarin. I've already learned I've lost a favourite in the Maelstrom.
The contract with Chevrolet ends soon so the theme is up in the air potentially. Some small rumors suggest the ride will get a Cars makeover/retheme since Epcot is introducing IP after IP. Not sure how they'll mesh that into future world, but 🤷♂️. I'd be interested to see how they pull it off. As for if that rumor has any grounding in reality has yet to be seen.
Phil Rabe No. it uses the same ride system, but is a completely different layout. Also was built new from ground up rather than using an existing building.
I have some questions. What is the ride system like? Does one group of six design a single concept vehicle. Is their design actually affect the ride experience? If two designers are in the same car, how do are there designs “tested”. Are they even tested?
Each person can design a vehicle which is then saved to Disney's local database for I believe up to 24 hours. At this point your design has already been rated, but you just can't see your scores. When you load you tap the same card or Magic Band so that the database knows "hey the person who made this car design is in this vehicle now". Everyone (all 6) can do this. Your car will then be shown on the screen with its score/rating and ranking according to different parameters/evaluations in different categories depending what section of the ride you're in. When the vehicle finishes a section the system then pulls your info from the database and essentially says "this vehicle just finished the speed test, let's bring up the speed scores for car designs that were linked to this car". However, it does not effect your ride experience unfortunately. Hope this helps. :)
Longest line for me with a completely let down experience despite astonishing theming has to be the Escape from Gringotts. I will probably ride it again someday, but 120 minutes was WAY too long to wait. NExt longest was 75 to ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Which is of course awesome. We were there on some extra early magic hours- BUT there were thousands of people already in the park somehow [it was opening month after all]. We walked the rops in and turned the corner to see an hour and fifteen line. HAHA good times tho
The tires have a much longer life span and have for a while. When the ride first opened it was short like you mention but not anymore. Disney had to contract out to a tire company to create a custom tire that lasts longer. Now a set will last about a month.
Just come to Seattle. Their monorail runs through downtown. You can stand right under the track and see the underside of the monorail as it passes overhead.
Any idea what causes this ride to be one of the most broken down rides in their parks. We spent four days in the pros recently and it was broken 90% of the time.
In all honestly, I love the old way the ride was themed. It was how I rode it as a kid and I loved every second of it (while unintentionally learning things). The real life implications of it and the industrial theming really interested me for some reason, more than the Tron-style theme does now.
This isn’t even really a theme. They removed everything and painted the walls and floor black…
The tron theme just tries to make Chevrolet look better and more advanced
The new theme is trash. Crash test dummies was amazing

Do you know if they have some way to recycle the tires (seeing that they only have a 2 day life span) or are they just thrown out?
The tires have a much longer life span. When the ride first opened it was less than a week. Disney had to contract out to a tire company to create a custom tire that lasts longer. Now a set will last about a month but seeing how they're custom made I don't think they'd have any practical recycling options besides trying to send the tires back to be used as raw materials for a future set.
I heard they recycle them to a group that creates playgrounds. They use the rubber from tires.
This is awesome!!!
You should do one for exposition Everest riling rollercoaster or tower of terror
What vehicle is the Test Track ride vehicle inspired by?
Love it thank you.
Which song is used in introduction at the beginning?
Your video are alwas well made and we'll explained for as conplexs as they are I do Wich had a bit more of a deeper dive in to this ride similar to harbor Express rid but I really do enjoy theas video

Why does that car have Lotus-sourced rear lights?
That car is from radiator springs racers in DCA. Same ride system as test track just a different exterior
Looks like a ~1961 Ford Galaxie sourced tail light TBH.
For some reason I can’t edit, so units wanted to address the typo: *your videos

Does anyone know what music he uses for the first 4-5 seconds of the video?
Did they update the ride system at all for Radiator Springs Racers at California Adventure? I assume not, since you used some B-roll footage from a behind the scenes special of that ride, but I was curious nonetheless :-)
How does Spaceship earth work?
What's the introduction music?
I’m guessing it’s twin “Radiator Springs” in Disney CA is made by the same company? And runs the same?
Tell me if I am wrong but doesnt 3 phase power require 5 different bus bars. If its just three then I am pretty sure thats single phase. Once again tell me if I am wrong but you need a bus bar for each hot (so three different hots) one for the neutral and one for ground.
The only way this could be 3 phase is if the ground of the electronics is also neutral for the AC. Bad idea though
While you're in the queue, what's all that stuff they ask you to program to make the car "your" car. As if I had designed the test parameters or whatever. Seems to not really make a difference to the ride experience. What do you say?
It doesn't make a difference. It's just a fun little thing they added. Nothing changes, it's the same ride profile, but your car comes up on the screen when the car passes the reader.
wwhats the songs called
How does aliens swirling saucers work at Hollywood Studios
Richy-James They spin themselves I think
You should do the original version of the test track, I really want to see this.
omg he did what i requested.
Can you please do one on Spaceship Earth? Or is that too similar to a standard omnimover?
Please do a video on the KMG AFTERBURNER!
It felt like that space mountain, big thunder mountain, tower of terror, slinky dog, and the 50 foot drop on splash mountain, all feel way faster than test trap especially space mountain
I love the intro music! Anyone know where I can find it on TH-cam?
"Saving The World" via the TH-cam Audio library. Though I did merge it with some other music from the video "the dream called Epcot"...
Ok, I give up. I've watched a lot of your videos, but have yet to locate a single gear. What am I doing wrong?
The tires have to be replaced weekly? That sounds very expensive.
Apparently it's now closer to monthly.
I rode this 5 times last Tuesday
How long was the line with the pandemic and everything?
Kiwi Kiwi it wasn’t that bad, it was constantly moving
South Jersey Thrills That sounds wonderful for Test Track 😂
PPPs, is Radiator Springs at DCA an Exact copy of Test Track?
Phil Rabe No. it uses the same ride system, but is a completely different layout. Also was built new from ground up rather than using an existing building.
I have some questions. What is the ride system like? Does one group of six design a single concept vehicle. Is their design actually affect the ride experience? If two designers are in the same car, how do are there designs “tested”. Are they even tested?
Sure, what's your question?
Hi I was just wondering if the cars land ride vehicles use the same system from test track
It's very similar, in fact the mechanics are somewhat compatible, but the computers are much more advanced.
Please do either journey to the centre of the earth or radiator springs racers
Isn’t test track the same system that was used on the Rocket Rods
Now a set will last about a month.
oh okay, good to know. I may end up making an updated version or at least an edits/corrections tab.
Commerical business have 3 Phase. homes only have 2 phases (unless it’s an apartment building) just for the record
Dang it, I knew that sounded odd.
Amusement Labs no worries haha ur good, i’m just the type of person who can’t stay silent on little mistakes
Looks like it costs plenty to keep it running in Florida, open all year round with repairs made when parks close, my best Disney ride I've been on
when's the next How It Works?
hopefully by the 17tth...
Is that Roy from The Office at 2:45??
I liked the world of motion
The Tron light coaster is almost as fast, right?
Yeah, 59mph, but it takes 5ever to get up to that speed cause the trains weight A LOT.
Just a hint for you guys. 400 volts is a CRAP LOAD. and 3 phase power is the wiring they use to wire an industrial warehouse. Seriously no joke!
Can we get how the monorail works?
Just come to Seattle. Their monorail runs through downtown. You can stand right under the track and see the underside of the monorail as it passes overhead.
nicee
Any idea what causes this ride to be one of the most broken down rides in their parks. We spent four days in the pros recently and it was broken 90% of the time.
It’s just so complex and so many things have to go right to make it function. Also, it can’t operate in a storm
