Just How Powerful is AGM-65 Maverick Missile

  • The AGM-65 Maverick is a precision-attack missile for the air, naval and marine forces of 30 countries. Maverick is certified for use on more than 25 aircraft, including helicopters, fighters, attack and patrol aircraft. More than 69,000 missiles have been produced to date, and more than 6,000 have been used in combat, with 93 percent accuracy.
    Maverick configurations are based on three seekers - television, infrared and laser - and two warhead sizes. The missile’s guidance software provides attack capability around-the-clock against fixed high-value targets, high-speed moving and maneuvering armored vehicles, ships and fast boats, and targets of opportunity. Targets of opportunity provide all-altitude point-and-shoot flexibility ideally suited for time-critical strike in urban close air support and maritime operations.

  • @thedungeondelver

    There was a planned, but never produced (due to the end of the Cold War) heavily modified version that essentially changed it into a small cruise missile: Tacit Rainbow. It switched out the solid fuel engine for an air-breathing turbojet engine. The seeker was changed to home in on enemy radar signals, and it would have carried a spherical blast fragmentation warhead. It had a long loiter capability, so when launched, the aircraft could leave, or engage another target. That way if the enemy radar operators detected a launch and shut down their emitters, the missile would go into standby loiter mode, and wait for them to be turned back on, then home in. Worked perfectly in the lab and testing, but, again, end of the cold war = no more bucks.

    Brings back the memories at RAF Bentwaters when we had to do the inspections on all AGM-65s we had in inventory. I was present when we had D model guidance upgrade with laser capability which lead to the development of the laser guided bombs. The bombs are actually cheaper and will do the same job without the propulsion.

    It would be quite effective against an enemy that has a warning for radar missiles if you used it against them from above for things like choppers. I'd imagine the IR one would be best for it. A-10s used to use the IR maverick to find targets at night because it can see better than just NOD. It was really used for scuds.

    • @Raz.C
      @Raz.C ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The prevalence of IR guided missiles in Air-to-Air combat has caused various nations to develop something called MAWS - Missile Approach Warning System. This forms the avionics package for most new military aircraft, alongside the more traditional RDR (Radar warning receiver). To a pilot, an incoming missile is as much of a threat if it's fired from another aircraft, or from the ground (SAMs or MANPADs). I guess, technically, the AAM could be a slightly greater threat, as the missile would have the added energy from the aircraft. Although, the SAMs (though NOT the MANPADs) would have the advantage of not being limited in size, due to the launch platform and could thus have more powerful rockets, thus giving the missile more energy than an aircraft flying at MACH 2.
      So I guess we're back to where we started - To a pilot, an incoming missile is as great a threat regardless of whether it's deployed from an incoming aircraft or from the ground. The MAWS device doesn't discriminate; It warns the pilot of ANY incoming missiles, regardless of whether they're AAMs or SAMs or even MANPAD missiles. I don't know this for certain, however, I would expect that this MAWS could be used by ground targets, to protect them from incoming AMGs. I DO know that APSs are supposed to be able to specifically defeat incoming missiles. The Russian Active Protection System (Arena-E and Afganit) is supposed to be able to defeat incoming threats (ie - missiles) with velocities of up to 3km/s. The Maverick missile is specifically named as a threat that it's capable of defeating.
      Alternatively, Israel's Trophy APS doesn't have a maximum-intercept-velocity listed, however, it DOES boast a 100% successful intercept rate in all combat environments that it's been used in, over the last 14 years. This is BAD NEWS for wimpy AMGs, like the Hellfire missile and its wimpy 9kg warhead. However, the Maverick missile has a 60kg/ 140kg warhead and an APS defence would still detonate that warhead, albeit prematurely. Nevertheless, those being protected by the APS would need to be shielded from the large explosion created by the 140kg warhead. Tank crews would be reasonably safe. SAM crews inside an armoured, windowless cab would be safe. Anyone outside would be toast or red mist. Similarly, the AGM-88 HARM missile would be almost useless against SAMs protected by an APS and the 50kg warhead of the HARM wouldn't be enough to err... harm any of the crew or equipment (assuming a successful intercept). At least the Maverick missile and its hefty 140kg warhead would result in modest damage to equipment and the 'removal' of any unprotected personnel even after being successfully intercepted by an APS.
      In summary, the AGM-65 kicks arse, it fucks arse and it looks for MORE arse!!! Lesser missiles are only good against the farmers of 3rd world nations, but Maverick missiles are good for anyone!!

    Maverick was a genuinely revolutionary weapon in the 1970s and it remains effective in its later variants. However, your assertion that it is “normally carried on a three round cluster” is manifestly untrue (please note there aren’t any shots of one in the video). The A-10 can carry such a launcher, but rarely does in practice. It also suffers from being rather large and heavy in comparison to more modern weapons like Brimstone, which really is carried in triplets.

    the light warhead weighs 126lbs in a shaped charge. compared to the agm-114 hellfire that has a 20lb warhead its 5xs more powerful and the agm-114 is considered to be able to kill any MBT in the world so if a 20lb shaped charge can do that then the 126lb warhead is probably like 5 amg-114s at once. so its very powerful and thats not even considering the 300lb warhead.

    A bit outdated if you have to choose missile on time , proximity or impact ..that should be available from within the aircraft. If the guidance system for sea is the same it may also mean it is not sea skimming..and that is really bad. They do a job but you dont want to rely on what was planned beforehand without possibilities to take initiative..no conflict works that way.
