    ‪An important accompaniment video for this one: th-cam.com/video/Cft1WkFCMrM/w-d-xo.html
    Please note that due to information presented later in the story (that I go explain in the above linked video) and a couple of key lines earlier, this is not a representation of what the show thinks about geniuses and talent, and instead what Oikawa thinks about it. Yet even still, Oikawa does indeed believe that he can defy this, make his talent bloom and become a world class player one day. This is evident given his lines right before the final point against Karasuno, and .. (SPOILERS!)
    .. Given everything that happens by the end of the series. His "worthless pride" and faith in himself allowed him to overcome his self-imposed Curse of the Ordinary to stand on the grandest stage of them all.

      Yep. Gotta have perspective and I'll use a football analogy. Not everyone can be a Messi, or Cristiano Ronaldo level athlete that simply look like gods compared to everyone else. But you can reach that tier right below it, or couple tiers below. Still fantastic enough to be a top class player, just not god level. I think Kageyama is god level talent, in the vein of Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Messi, Ronaldo, Giba, Thales Hoss, Yuji Nishida and so on, so it's really unfair to compare other player's talents to his.

      I see where your coming from, but I disagree. With Aoba Johsai, it's like two teams fighting eachother as rivals, I think they actually said "arch-nemisis" in the anime. While with Shiratorizawa, no one thought Karasuno could win, but they fought their hearts out resulting in some emotional moments for Tsuki and the third years who brought glory for the "grounded crows". Shiratorizawa drew every ounce of effort out of the whole team and you could clearly see it in the game, while Aoba Johsai was emotional because you really felt like both teams deserved to win. At least this is how I see it. Also, Tsuki block.

    I’m so glad this video was made. Oikawa is one of the most complex antagonists in sports anime and truly makes Haikyuu stand out from the others. He’s supposed to be the villain, he’s supposed to be flawed but he’s likeable even from the start. On one hand, he’s highly intelligent and attractive and therefore highly revered by everyone around him. Unlike Kageyama and Hinata, he’s wildly popular outside of his volleyball skills and we are made to believe he is set to achieve in life. He is “cool”. He has natural charisma and charm that contrasts perfectly to Kageyama’s stand-offish, unfriendly personality. And Oikawa isn’t cruel all the time. The creators do an amazing job at fully humanising him. He has a young nephew who we see he looks after, he helps Kageyama even though he’s someone he hates. He has more control over his disposition compared to the younger characters. Unlike Kageyama, he stays calm and collected, rarely letting the pressure on him show. He’s the captain, a proper, experienced leader of which Kageyama and Hinata are yet to achieve. But he’s also snide and nasty and competitive, bitter about anyone considered a “genius”. He’s smug and cunning, using his influence to his advantage and acting childish to taunt the opponent. Because of the injustice of his talents, he believes “his way” is the only right way. And because he is so revered in other aspects, you can tell it hurts even more that he has to try so hard just to keep up with others in the thing he loves most (volleyball). It’s this jealousy and envy, this unfair luck of the draw in life, his inferiority complex that make us relate to him and want him to succeed. In all aspects, he should be incredible at volleyball. He’s tall and lithe with long arms, he’s highly athletic and has power and he’s smart and creative and composed. But every volleyball skill he has, he’s had to work his absolute ass off for. I think everyone can relate to that in one way or another because no matter how perfect we seem, no one is good at everything. Most of the time, we have to work hard for what we want and start from nothing. The best part is that he shows us that we can succeed by using what we already have WITHOUT stupid made-up advantages (like being invisible cough cough looking at you Kuroko). He shows it’s not about having an edge over your opponent with some natural skill. It’s about using what’s already in your arsenal to your advantage. And that makes him incredibly likeable. I for one, was unsure who I should be rooting for when johsai and karasuno played for the second time. That rarely ever happens in sports anime. But it makes it feel REAL. You’re watching two schools play who equally deserve to win. Two opponents who work just as hard as each other. And the creators don’t use Oikawa or his backstory as a scapegoat for the story’s sake. He is a character in his own right and he is just as important as the protagonists. He even continually appears, watching karasuno’s other games and providing his commentary. They don’t just throw his backstory in for one episode and expect us to get it. He’s scattered throughout the series, not just as an opponent but a true double to Kageyama and Hinata. We see him grow without even knowing it and before long we’re starting to actually like him. I can’t say there are many other sports anime that have been able to do the same thing so seamlessly. I believe out of the whole of haikyuu, he is the freshest and most original character and for that, he’s my favourite.
    (Sorry if I got any facts wrong, it’s been a while) (and sorry for writing an entire essay that no one will read)

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +117

      He has an amazing serve, sure, but that really doesn't undercut anything I said, nor anything the story said. That serve was the result of hard work, not talent. Like I said, Oikawa is special in a number of ways. Interpersonal intelligence, knowledge of the game, hard work ethic, etc. But as the story displays, Oikawa has ordinary volleyball talent. People are just born better than him. He isn’t extraordinarily gifted, so his talent level is ordinary. I’ll change the title the minute that a word is invented in between “ordinary” and “extraordinary,” but until then, Oikawa will have ordinary volleyball skill because, as the story says, he’s “not a genius.” He’s not extraordinary. Also, I dunno why you’re assuming that I didn’t read the manga. I did, and even if I didn’t, the anime says this all anyway.
      *Thus, what separates the two are their mentalities.*
      That’s not quite true, and the text backs me up. It’s continuously stated within the story that talent, ability and volleyball aptitude is the difference between the two. Oikawa has a better mentality than Kageyama. He’s more mature and more of a leader, and he knows the role of a setter better as shown when he had to teach Kageyama how to improve with Hinata.
      *Oikawa may bring 100% out of his team but Kageyama brings out more than 100%, and this is a common theme within the manga.*
      I said almost exactly the same thing in the video. And again, this is not just a manga thing. It’s said in the anime too.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      I don’t know why you continuously misinterpret me - it doesn't seem like you read what I replied nor listened to what I said in the video, and I'll explain why in the second paragraph. Firstly, I never implied anything about black or white, binary situations like you’re saying just because I provided you with the definition for ordinary. I'm aware that talent exists on a spectrum, but this is just a title of a video. I'm not going to title this "The Curse of Those Who Are Not Geniuses." Like, I dunno what to say. If you’re not extraordinary in some facet, you’re ordinary, regardless of that spectrum. Just ignore the title if that’s your problem and focus on what I actually said, because what I said is not “black or white.”
      Aside from that, I said within the video multiple times that Oikawa is a wonderful player with aptitude in several areas. The only thing that holds him back is his volleyball talent potential, for which the story backs me up on multiple occasions. I know that raw talent isn’t the only way that talent manifests and I don’t know who or what you think you’re arguing against. I literally said within the video and the comment that replied to you that he’s special in several other ways. But raw talent is the factor that holds Oikawa back from having a ceiling like Kageyama. And that is his goal, what he fixates on, so OF COURSE I’m going to emphasize it more than his talent in other areas. It’s the entire point of his character arc and it's the reason that he has such an emotional journey. And yes, volleyball is a team sport, so Oikawa can still achieve incredible things despite the relative lack of talent compared to phenoms. Yet again, that is literally a line from the video. I said this.
      I gave much more nuance to this character and situation than you implied. You’re focusing on the semantics so much that you’re strawmanning me and not listening to what I said, and that’s not productive at all.

    • @newframe6937
      @newframe6937 5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @emerl98 Dude, he literally acknowledged that Oikawa has talent but not in pure volleyball skills. He said that Oikawa is an above average player, surely but since he doesnt have an exceptional talent hes not talented enough to fall into the category of talented. Hes not arguing that Oikawa has no talent at all but that it pales in comparison to those who DO have talent

    • @Beneagere1

      “He is ordinary for a lack of better words“ is what he said. Isn‘t that enough for you?
      In this analysis, he compared Oikawa to other, more talented, players. Therefore every time he described Oikawa, it was relative to those who had more raw talent. There were also half a dozen points about how exceptional Oikawa is.

  • @tier6344
    @tier6344 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3780

    Adding to the unfairness, oikawa has an unmentioned knee injurry (one of his knee supporters are apparently used for injuries) and he was late to the first seijou/karasuno match because he was "injured from practicing too hard" and it was most likely because he knew kageyama was going to be there against him. Given oikawa's extreme passion for volleyball i doubt his knee injury wont be anything temporary since he's always pushing himself to win. It's also most probably the worst type of disadvantage a volleyball player could get, and he had it at the price of working as hard to be at the same level as ushijima and kageyama... I really hope things get better for oikawa in the future (if we'll ever see him play again)

      I'm pretty sure it's explicitly stated in both the anime and the manga that he had a (minor) ANKLE injury (see: chapter 13, iirc), which is what made him late to the practice match. Fans have interpreted his differently-colored knee pads as being a knee injury without any further evidence. Not that this diminishes anything about his character - just that his character is plenty deep without people adding BS extras with no real basis, and doing so only cheapens it.

      @@cassieo376 while i haven't seen any direct evidence to say he has that fandom knee injury, i disagree that adding or theorizing about it cheapens anything. if it was just a random 'oh he did worse off because he's injured' thing it would be different-- that would take away from the hard-hitting message the video talks about-- but if you look at the injury, as most do, as a result of his own overzealous actions then it fits rather well into the narrative of him trying too hard to be individualistic and his general jealously leading to negative outcomes. Him being warned against overworking himself (with injury being the obvious concern) is directly mentioned in the flashback, partly to show that kind of unchecked drive is unhealthy and will only lead to being worse off. And often enough physical problems are used as metaphors for broader internal problems. So the knee injury could be a physical manifestation of the character flaws that caused it as well as a tangible representation of limitations (that his rivals don't suffer from). Obviously, you don't have to accept a read where this injury even exists, but i do think it's an interesting concept regardless of if the creator intended it ( +1 for death of the author). At the very least, it's more thematically interesting than giving him different colored knee pads in the character design process for... fashion points?

    There's a fantastic sequence in the manga that I'll try not to spoil too much. In a match at Nationals, Karasuno have their backs against the wall. Together Kageyama and Tanaka pull off an incredible move that has major implications for the growth of both players. Celebrations ensue and then we cut to someone watching the match on a mobile. Who else but Oikawa? The first panel shows him watching the match with a serious and focused expression outdoors. He then rips his earphones out, stuffs then away and begins running. The last shot of him is just of his face, wearing a small determined grin. He's not done, not by any means, even if he has to fight against those geniuses born with natural talent.

  • @saeedbaig4249
    @saeedbaig4249 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5263

    It's ironic that you talk about how insecure Oikawa is about geniuses like Kageyama because Kageyama felt the exact same way (maybe moreso) about Oikawa.
    Kageyama told Hinata that he thought that he wouldn't be able to beat Oikawa as a setter because Oikawa is exactly what Kageyama isn't; a team player, someone who inspires and brings out the best in his team-mates, which Kageyama struggles to do. It's partly this reason Kageyama cracked under pressure in their first (official) match against Oikawa, and Kageyama's insecurity was only intensified when he saw his old schoolmates who used to hate playing alongside him, have fun playing alongside Oikawa.
    Even after Kageyama beat Oikawa in their rematch, Kageyama still admitted that no one scared him more than Oikawa. Ushijima still viewed Oikawa as the better setter, and it affected Kageyama so much that, even after he beat Ushijima, his last words to him were "I'll make you say that I'm a better setter than Oikawa!".
    Guess it just goes to show that everyone (even naturally-talented geniuses) face insecurity.

    It's sad that most people in the fandom doesn't realize this things in Oikawa as a character and they just see his "trashy" personality, when he is probably the most human character on the show... What I really love is that despise his "Curse of the Ordinary" he is probably (at least so far in the anime, I can't talk about manga) the most respected player in Haikyuu... No i understand his character, i just dont excuse his horrible actions/attitude because of it.
      Edit:Damn yall so sensitive about me not loving oikawa as a character lmao. Just because hes relatable doesn't make him a good person. Im not saying he deserves hate or that its wrong to like him but he has done bad things and he does have a :trashy personality" to the point where his teammates point it out. Does that mean i can't see that hes a good character? No, i just dont like what he did. Please Hop off my ass and learn how to take an opinion.
      Edit 2: after the timeskip hes really matured and even grown on me a bit. Also his personality is what made him a great antagonist at the start.

      Anyone that ever competed, be it in sports or anything else, can relate to him. He trash talks, make fun of who is inferior to him, but he never humiliates them, he never crosses a line. He is justing enjoying the moment while he still can, while he's above. Eventually everyone stops being the best, even the most talented human will one day be surpassed, be it because of age, because of new technics, a new genius or whatever. Oikawa seems to me just like a really good rival to have. You hate him while he's on top, and that makes you want to become better, so you can finally be the one talking down on him.

    • @kokonotsuu7
      @kokonotsuu7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +104

      Yeah, I guess truly trash talking is not exactly what I wanted to mean, since it really disrespects and humiliate people. It's more like a friendly banter, like saying that someone have to work a lot to get to your level or that you were sure you would win. And I think that's closer to what he does than something like really insulting the people that he beats.

    When I first watched Haikyuu!! I hated Oikawa, not because of shitty personality or the fact that I can't stand pretty boys, but because deep down I resonated with him far too much and it terrified me. I saw myself in him, in his thoughts, in his habits but most of all in his insecurities. The curse of being ordinary, the curse of knowing that people around you are better at something that you want to dedicate your whole life to, for reasons that are out of your control hurts so much, it's so painful that I can't describe it. When he said "Don't you ever forget my worthless pride" I felt those words, I knew what they meant even before I finished reading the subtitles, because they were mine, they were my words, my voice and I was amazed how emotional the scene and its delivery made me . Oikawa Tooru inspires me to keep going, more than that Furudate Haruichi inspires me to keep going. I will continue towards my own day in the sun and though I may not be the brightest star in the sky: I will shine nonetheless.

    What made me love Oikawa even more is his appearance in the recent manga chapters.
    *spoilers for manga chapters 374*
    The fact he kept following his dream and playing in a foreigner team is great and his and Hinata's relationship development from rivals to friends is pretty amazing. He lifted Hinata's spirit when he's feeling down being alone in Rio and I was finally able to see Oikawa setting the ball to Hinata when they're playing beach volleyball. Or even better HINATA SETTING TO OIKAWA. MY LIFE IS NOW COMPLETE. And when he called Hinata "Shouyou" literally got me screaming in my bed. I used to hate him but now he's my all-time favourite anime character. I relate to him SO much as a former athlete. I know how it feels when 'geniuses' easily perform skills that took you years to master. I know how it feels to have to work ten times as hard for a decent chance at winning. I know how it feels to never be good enough. *I know how it feels to not be a genius.*
    Tooru is a character that is so similar to me, in his insecurities, doubts, fears and skills, and he inspires me to do better. Seijoh is my favourite team because of a reason; Tooru was the setter, the glue that brought them together and created a near-invincible dynamic. In the end, they lost but he STILL DIDN'T GIVE UP. If that isn't admirable determination, I don't know what is.
    In short, give the boy a chance. You might end up loving him as much as I do.
    Ladies, gentlemen and non-binary fellows, Oikawa Tooru has carved a permanent place in my heart and my life.

    I find it interesting that both Oikawa and Kageyama actually both find the other one better. Like Oikawa may be confident but he acknowledges-or thinks-that Kageyama is a better setter than him, which infuriates him but at the same time drives him to train even harder. At the same time, Kageyama obviously still sees Oikawa as someone he needs to surpass, to the point that even after winning against Shiratorizawa, that still remained to be his goal (i.e. he wanted Ushiwaka to acknowledge him as the better setter).
    Edit: Even at present/post-timeskip, Oikawa still appears in Kageyama's inner monologues (we see Oikawa's back at the part when Kageyama thinks of all the great players he gets to play with and remembers his grandpa telling him that if he were to get really good, someone better will come to find him). Maybe they're battling on equal footing now, maybe he still sees Oikawa as someone he needs to surpass (I find it symbolic that we are shown Oikawa's back, they're not face-to-face unlike the others). Either way, they still obviously influence each other and I find that beautiful.

But if Oikawa had a gift, I would say it's his natural charisma, yeah it doesn't exactly line up with his passion but leadership ability is something useful in all walks of life. Ushijima and Kageyama so far have shown that volleyball is all they're good at whereas Oikawa's natural charm gives him an advantage in most areas outside of the sports realm. But yeah, as far as talent goes, all he has his hard work and average ability. Can't imagine how that must feel when Oikawa pretty much lives for volleyball.

It's that something that makes me feel it separates the people who are truly alive inside from the people, like me, who seemingly are just the exact opposite. And I can vouch for your exact words; it *is* agonizing to accept. Life's not fair in the slightest, but just because that is doesn't mean you should just call it quits. This is really a great video. It really hits how I see Oikawa. As much as I'm happy that Karasuno won the match, it really pains me that Oikawa (and Iwa-chan) is in his third year and lost his card to beat Ushikawa. I lost it when he cried after. It really is unfair for people who have worked hard to not reap what they sought but I hope this is not the last time we'll see Oikawa plays volleyball.

  • @marganaapsinthia
    @marganaapsinthia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +362

    I don’t think he’s ordinary - his kind of talent is just different than Kageyama’s. He can make any team function smoothly within an hour of meeting them - which is something Kageyama will never be able to do, and he said so himself. Did Oikawa “work” on his talent with people? Nope - it just comes to him naturally, and someone not talented in the area will never be able to repeat the feat. The main difference between the two is that Oikawa, despite the shallow image he presents, is reflective and therefore he doubts himself, while Kageyama doesn’t. Or rather - Oikawa is frustrated that he doesn’t have both talents, and Kageyama notices he’ll never have both and is satisfied with his own. He has a one-track mind - which is good because he never questions whether he’d be able to do something - he just goes and does it and isn’t bothered by anything else. That’s the power of focus.
    I honestly think we’ve become somewhat crazed by this notion of “talent”. Everyone wants to be “gifted”. Well, to me it seems that the most remarkable people in history never gave much thought to talent - they just did what they loved to do, never caring about what anyone else thought about them or their work. If there’s a formula for happy life, that’s it. Hinata and Kageyama are examples of that attitude, while Oikawa is an example of what worrying about your “worth” will do to you.
    As I see it, the main message of the series is to nourish not competition, but the idea that both you and your opponent can be great in different ways. The emphasis is on the playful element of team sports, on cooperation and helping your opponents grow, not on defeating them. It’s why I love it.

    • @bratitu5601

      no ,you will see it yourself when you met someone with real talent.

    • @marganaapsinthia
      @marganaapsinthia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@bratitu5601 And why do you assume I haven't? I have; I know many people with talent. I have some as well. I've also been anxious, worried, I've compared myself to others - and all of that kept me from truly being what I can be. What I wrote comes from experience. Not comparing oneself to others, but acknowledging the variety of talents and personalities is what makes us free to be who we are. Then we shine. That is also when anxiety evaporates.
      Besides, no field of human action is reserved only for the elite. Should we give up love for music because we're not Bachs and Beethovens of the world? Would we be happier that way? What counts is loving what you do and having fun, and allowing everyone else to do the same. There's no excellence without fun and no fun without freedom. As Hinata says in the manga: "I understand: being good means being free."
      Oikawa is not. Yet. I want him to be, though. It's the best thing in the world, better than volleyball or anything in particular, really - although it's through the particular that we come to understand it.

    One could argue that you don´t usually seek what you are already talented at, but what you want to be good at, which sets you up for the wall that is innate talent. However, it´s also true that talent is a very blurry thing. I have been told I have some talent for drawing, but most people weren´t there when I was a kid and drew all the time. When you look at others, you only see the results of years of polishing that particular skill; no one becomes a master by accident.

She was better in every aspect in terms academic intelligence I would study and try my hardest to understand something she picked it up within seconds the amount of time it took me to solve one problem she finished like 10. It didn’t matter how long I stayed up to study how many times I skipped going to lunch to sit in class with the teacher or skipped hanging out after school to sit in class and work I couldn’t ever get a better score then her. She picked up things so fast I thought it was inhuman at times but she’s just gifted like that . I realized it was never gonna be easy for me like it was for her it pissed me off still dose in all honesty my head just doesn’t connect to things like that specially in academics.
    It’s something I’m envious of ...it wasn’t only school but other things too like sports didn’t matter how hard I tried she was better .She seemed to be so good at everything with ease while I was here going ham trying to improve at the end of the day it left me feeling sorta less then but my pride also never let me except defeat so I keep trying and doing my best because one day I’ll beat her in something . Anyways Oikawa is my favorite character in haikyuu and like top five overall for anime’s for his sheer determination and pride he’s not this natural born talent he is not especially special but he has the courage to try anyways and doesn’t lay down and except defeat . He keeps chasing a dream no matter the disadvantages and that’s some admirable shit.

    You said all the things that I had in my mind for Oikawa. There were 2 things that made me realize how great of a character he is.
    First, was when he accepted the fact that one day Kageyama will definitely defeat him but he decided that it would not be today, shows that even if had defeated Kageyama he will fight again in order to maintain his best. He is more interested in beating his past self and constructing himself to be the very best version of himself. He grades himself with his own self.
    Second, how he handled his defeat against Karasuno. This showed how deep his character runs and how he handles the different position he holds. Here he was the Captain and not a Setter. He didn't cry for the loss no matter how much it hurts him but he did his best to support with his head high accepting all the effort that the team had put in the match. His thank you for the past three years shows how much he has grown as a player and as a human, his team was the one (specially the third years) who kept him at pace and at the same time helped him to grow that he was able to deal all defeats and short-comes with equal dedication.
    Oikawa is a person who doesn't talk but leads his team with his actions and that is the reason why his team does everything in their will power to match those actions. Oikawa is such a great character and not just a typical antagonist. He is very well crafted, nicely layered and beautiful placed in front of you. In spite of being ordinary, he being a threat to all possible strong teams and geniuses puts all his hard work into pay because there ain't a single player in the Haikyuu universe who doesn't respect his hard work and not in awe of it. Damn, I started crying while remembering him.

    Ushijima is not without personality, but he's more of a symbol than a person in the story. Satori and Washijo were the people who gave Shiratorizawa life in their match with Karasuno. But there's just something so compelling about Oikawa's struggle and overall character.

    Lets be honest. Oikawa is most of us. He represents those who aim for a field in life only to find that there are certain people who are simply better. But what he teaches us is that anyone who keeps trying can make their talent blossom at one point in life. That everyones path to evolution is different. The road to success is extremely difficult and even if one has to swim against the tide, competing against talented people doesnt mean one has to resign to the curse and give up.
    As far as i recall, he was one of the few who could break into a foreign league, yes, even before the talented Kageyama. Wow, this was amazing. There are alot of motivational videos here on youtube, that use phrases like "Hard work beats talent, if talent does't work hard". This has always rubbed me the wrong way, as it leads to false expectations. The more successful you get (sports, science, etc.) the higher the chance, that you encounter people, who work as hard as you and have talent. That doesn't mean, you can't enjoy what you are doing, just don't epect to reach the top, just because you work hard.

    Wow, you made me love Oikawa even more.
    He is one of the best characters in my opinion.
    You may or may not like him, but you can't deny that he is a well written character who improved on his own. It's not about talent, it's about his hard work. He worked so damn hard to improve his skills, and I really hope he'll be able to pursue his dreams in the future... and maybe one day he'll become strong enough to be a member of the National Team.

    This video is absolutely phenomenal
    Most people have a passion for something but still know that they are not geniuses and other people will be better
    And I think what makes Oikawa so great is that he knows that but still goes on and does everything he can
    For many people that should be relatable and this determination is a great characteristic most people don’t have
    Even for people who are naturally good at what they love it’s relatable (and I speak of myself here so I know that)
    It’s one of the reasons why he’s one of my favourite Haikyuu characters

    I made one of my friends watch this anime series and they told me how I sound so much like Oikawa. I guess I never noticed it before but I say "I really hate geniuses," So many times and always finishes it off with "But I I admire them at the same time." Because of this anime I started playing volleyball, I already knew it wouldn't be easy in the start but one amazing hit where even the best player couldn't touch it, one receive that saved our game, one set that made the best hit of the game, that three amazing moments made me hooked on the volleyball. I know someone's bound to be better than me, that's why lately I've been saying "idrc if i lose or win," but after that lost I had last week, it made me motivated again, it always drives me when I see someone better than me. I naturally stopped having delusions of "oh, what if im secretly a genius--" "im gonna be a professional volleyball player" because there's this girl who just started playing volleyball in our team when she joined last year, yet she's already a stable receiver, a good server and a spiker. Shit, it made me scared. That creeping talent behind you. It's terrifying. I thought I adjusted to volleyball really quick, but she did faster than me. I recently learned she plays many sports, I told myself I didn't want to lose to someone who's not giving volleyball a full attention like i did, but she was better than me. But bro, we're in the same team, as much as I want to improve, I'm also thankful that she's on my team and I guess since we both play setters, I'll try my best to improve with her. Talent is something you make bloom!

      This inspires me to take that extra step to join my volleyball team. I've been contemplating about it, as I had my doubts in my abilities. But whether I'm sitting on the bench or standing on the court, I want to give it my all. I also can't help but notice your Taehyung icon--

    I wrote a poem inspired by your video. I hope you see it:
    The curse of the ordinary,
    Is a tyrant who wields the shackles of destiny,
    Which binds our potential to our fate,
    Although a man without limits is no man at all,
    When gazing upon our peers,
    What first resembles a curse,
    Becomes the blessing called empathy,

    You don’t understand how much I appreciate your video essay analysis on his character. Oikawa is definitely one of the best written characters in HQ and doesn’t deserve the negative press he gets from fans who don’t understand his character. I’ve met many HQ fans who tell me they “hate him because he bullies Kageyama too much” or “he’s a trashy person.” I could write so many essays about how those claims are not the case at all.
    I resonate with Oikawa and so do many HQ fans (whether they’ve realized it or not). I initially felt uncomfortable with him because how he acted spitefully and cunning when faced with his insecurities and main competitor, or watching how hard he had to work to hold a candle to those with innate talent really resonated with me. It made me, and I’m sure many other fans, feel like they were looking at some aspect of themselves.
    He deserves so much more respect and support as a character, and so much more than a surface-level opinion that seems him unworthy of these.
    Thank you for your analysis, really.

    this just hits too close to home... i guess the fact that i related to oikawa so much i was blindsided to this perspective. i didn’t like him, his personality, but the way he always put his team first was how i was in high school. but as the years continued my abilities flatlined and newer, younger athletes came and surpassed me in every way. desperate to prove myself once again and maintain my sanity in the sport i loved, i practiced until i dropped day after day. to no avail. no matter how much i wanted it, there was always someone better and there was nothing i could do about it. when i tore my tendon in my knee, i fell behind, and the gifted took my place easily. i could never catch up. never jump as high, run as fast anymore. dribble and pivot. nothing.
    the curse of the ordinary is as real as it gets. and here, years later after my golden days when i thought i was special, i can finally admit that i was among the ordinary.

When I get to know his backstory I totally understand and I think he's easy to understand too but when I realised that many people hate him I was like why??? He's definitely not a perfect person or innocent but personally I think we all are just the same too.

    Oikawa Toru in a way represents Derrick Rose's story from the NBA, both are super talented prodigies who never got to reach their ultimate dream of becoming the greatest due to circumstances that they cannot control, but in the end they did the best that they can and never gave up to redeem and atleast be the figure of what they were supposed to be, The Greatest of All Time

    I watch this video once or twice every year (since 2019) depending upon the how ordinary I feel. People around me making monstrous progress in life or in career. People who started behind me casually surpassing me even with their lack of extreme effort. It's very frustrating. As much as I am happy for them.The sheer limit to what I can do and how much I can do is very frustrating. This video and the iconic quote from the coach is what makes me want to try one last time. Today.... would be my 4th one last time, I will try to make my talent bloom. If I fail again. I will come here again and try one last time again.

    I think oikawa and the whole show underestimate him. Noone who has seen oikawa playing said he was ordinary, they said he was a monster. Oikawa just needs some good teammates, at seijo only iwa and mad dog were decent.

    And this is what I think people don’t get. Oikawa while not as technically gifted as kageyama is his own kind of genius one that we don’t really pay attention too. He has more of an emotional genius where he can adapt and bring the best out of every spiker. And I think that’s more important than any technical skill because volleyball is a team sport and as shown by kageyama it doesn’t matter how perfectly you set the ball if your spiker can’t hit it 🤷🏿‍♀️

    Whenever I tell people that Oikawa is my favorite character they think I am a fanboy because he is good-looking. First of all I'm not gay. The reason he is my favorite is because of what this video explains. I to sometimes think I'm nothing but average (I play sports). The only thing I have is my pride and hard work ethic. Oikawa is my favorite because I relate to him more than anyone else in the show.

    The only talent Oikawa didnt possess which is the most important is " Self confidence " that he was the best. Losing a lot of matches does that to you. Oikawa was just as good as Kageyama but that "talent" word always gave him an excuse instead of developing his own weapons to fight.
    He is my favourite setter but would have been happy had he always believed in himself just as Iwa chan did their whole lives.

    Oikawa's story is so inspiring and heart hitting because it involves the harsh reality that you probably won't be great at everything you desire to be. His story would inspire people to work hard to reach the limit of your abilities and not giving up mid-way or not even begin because of despair. Oikawa's efforts did not altogether go in vain. He retains his respect as a SETTER among people who've seen him play and played with him. He's a worthy rival to compete with

    I can’t stop watching this video because I relate to Oikawa so much. I’m a Varsity striker for my boys high school soccer team. We win games but we also lose a lot to. I practice and train so much but unfortunately since I’m not as athletic as my opponents I’ll just never surpass them. However that doesn’t stop me and I still try to encourage my team mates to go on to victory. But unfortunately I’m just like Oikawa. I’m just ordinary.

      Well so here's something that I hope motivates you. Haikyuu isn't by far over yet in the anime and neither is Oikawa. I don't want to spoil anything from you but Oikawa ends up watching Karasuno's match against Inarizaki and somehow something in him clicks when he watches Tanaka's progress. Fast forward a few years and he choses a completely different path to evolve his voleyball compared to everyone else. So Oikawa Toru does not settle for mediocrity. You could say his growth is probably the best in the entire series. Wait for it to end.. Oikawa is the man who chose the path no one else walked.

    Newest chapter of Haikyuu dropped and SPOILERS BELOW
    Kageyama has been pretty much breathing volleyball since he’s a baby, and that chapter is incredible in providing us insight to Kageyama. I think it’s just time/experience and circumstances that allowed Kageyama to surpass Oikawa.
    An additional point is that Oikawa and Iwazumi were the only people who matched Kageyama’s passion, and after losing his grandpa, two most enthusiastic teammates and essentially his entire team in middle school, Kageyama’s isolation hits especially hard.
    “I’m here!” from Hinata is what truly brought Kageyama’s passion back. God Haikyuu is so good it’s a something we need but don’t deserve.

    seeing this video makes me wanna cry so much :((
    i'm a volleyball player too and i'm also the captain of the team. after watching haikyuu, i can say that oikawa is truly my favorite character; he is someone i can relate to, and someone i want to be as well. i have been playing volleyball for 8 years now and i'm 16 years old, so that's basically half of my life as of the moment. my school is also part of the powerhouses in my area, but not in the whole country. i could say that i'm also not extraordinary or talented when it comes to volleyball, and all my skills are just because of my hard work. i am the shortest middle blocker in my team but i can't say i'm like hinata who can jump high and run fast because i'm poor in that field as well, but then again, i'm the captain and one of the main players. similar to oikawa, whenever i see other middle blockers who are taller and more talented, regardless of how old they are and where they came from, i can't help but feel inferior to them. this is one of the things that my coach has always pointed out to me; that i always doubt myself and my capabilities, that i always bring myself down, and that i always lower my confidence just because someone in front of me is more "talented". but after watching oikawa in haikyuu, i'm more than ready to work harder and show that my strengths too have no limits and that i can do the things someone with talent can do as well. oikawa has inspired me so much to train harder to improve my skills and attitude. he showed me that even if he wasn't a prodigy like kageyama, he was still able to become one of the best setters or players in the series. and there is no doubt he is a great captain as well. every captain in haikyuu is amazing but oikawa left the biggest impact on me. he had great leadership skills and he knew how to make his teammates shine inside the court. even if i'm not a setter, as a captain, i also want to bring out the best in my teammates just like oikawa. i'm sorry if i said too much :(( but i just wanna express how he inspired me so much to keep going. 😋✌🏻
