Yeah they are extremely intelligent and desperate to please. People want them as guard dogs but don't train them properly so they don't know when to be in guard mode and when not to be. So they get confused and think they are supposed to attack everything. Don't get a Rottweiler unless you know how to train them they are not for beginners.

One of the rottweilers I know literally stops dead in her tracks and squeaks when she sees somebody she wants to get to know.

This comment comes about 8 months late, but Rottweilers are one of the more reserved guard dogs out there. It is common for them to actually let intruders come into a guarded space, then refuse to let them leave the guarded space. I believe the vast majority of the hate on Rotties comes from the fact they are more quiet than most guard dogs, far less likely to bark. So people feel like they didnt get much warning before a violent outburst even though the rotty probably did plenty of rumbling growling and posturing beforehand.
Rotties are very well-mannered dogs. They are not randomly aggressive, even if they are far more capable and willing to execute aggression than other breeds. Just a magnificent guard dog. Ive had several throughout my life and they have all been by far my favorites. Better than a golden, than a shaggy black mutt, than a lab/mastiff, or any of the dogs Ive dealt with that others owned.
I dont know why people insist on clipping their tails, though.

My cousin's husband had a giant rottweiler. He was huge and he was not really fond of strangers. He looked just like binky. We watched him closely when we went to his shop to get some mechanic work done to our car and noticed his grandchildren laying on top of the dog sleeping with the dog just laying there happy as a lark. He warned us not to go near those kids because he would become very aggressive. Those were his babies!!

my dogo carnario mix even guards strangers' toddlers.
it's usually not a problem because he is happy just watching them play from a distance, but if the child cries, he will push himself between the crying child and the caretakers.
If he thinks they're in distress he doesn't let anyone approach his newly acquired human puppies except his own family. we call him away then, but it can be a bit of an issue, because while he is not loud or aggressive, I wouldn't vouch for him to not at least growl or warning bite if the person would still try to get close to the child....and even if he doesn't intend to hurt.... things should not escalate to a warning "air bite" with a dog like this.
that's why if you got so protective dogs, you gotta always have an eye on them and make sure his interactions with people are safe for everyone.

Ill always remember the security that came with his presence. He weighed more than most adult men and for preteen and early teen me, was basically a horse. A lovely animal he was. Supremely kind to all animals on our ranch and lethal to intrusive pest animals. Snakes, coyotes, mountain lions, he'd confront them all.

I'm a dog walker, and one of my regulars was a pitbull who LOVED being pet and getting attention, especially from kids (he lived with several young kids). His little tail nub would wiggle so fast when people stopped to pet him, it was adorable! (His tail was docked for medical reasons after he got hit by a car. His ears were still nice and floppy)
I have such a soft spot for big "guard dog" breeds because they're just so misunderstood, and are usually just big cuddle bugs. Odin wasn't actually that big, he only came up to my knees. He'd get so excited to see me that he'd nearly fall down the stairs getting out the door. Sweet boy.

First time niece's husband met our current large rotty he backed off and got a strange look. Asked what was wrong amd he said he growled at me. Her and I both were shocked and asked if he was sure. At that point she roughed him up and as usual with rotties he blahed. I asked is that what you heard he said yes. Niece and I both laughed and said that is not a growl. Told him if a rott growls at you you will know it.

Most dogs do that though, growling in itself doesn't HAVE to mean anything threatning. It definatly can be though, like in this case.

I can always tell if my malamute is actually cranky because his nose wrinkles up as he bares his teeth (but he always puts his head down so I can only see the nose wrinkles lol), otherwise his growling is just for fun, are rotties the same or is it a really audible difference with them

@@butasimpleidiotwizard A rotties growl when its a playful jest has no teeth bearing or nose crinkling think of it as a gutteral vocalization only. When they are getting angry there is the teeth baring and there is the crinkling BUT the other thing is the growl is deeper. It's like they go from a baritone to a bass in force with the growl, and you will feel immediately threatened you wont be confused by the meaning it is a, F-off or I'll learn you to F-off type thing.

I work at a dog kennel and there’s a Rottweiler that comes in sometimes named Hudson and he’s the sweetest little boy ever. Thinks he’s a lap dog and doesn’t know his strength. His excitement is destructive. We love him.

Although I’m not a pet groomer, I do work with dogs at a daycare, and one of the things I do to pass the time + relax the dogs is brush them (but only if they’re comfortable with me doing it-I’m very observant of a dog’s behavior) & I was inspired by the tools you use, so I ordered myself an undercoat rake & equigroomer (*update: they’ll be here tonight!) so I guess I wanna thank you for the product recommendations! :)

the first dog we ever had was a Rottweiler-German Shepherd mix named Dewce. He was the biggest baybe. i remember when i was a toddler, me and my sibbling would lay with him on the carpet. he was a good pillow. ^^ one time we couldnt find him. my mom and dad searched the entire street for him, even got some of the neighbors involved. came back to find he somehow locked himself in the laundry room. Sadly he passed away when I was about 12 or so. he was the sweetest lil man and we miss him every day.

Molosser-type dogs look scary and act serious because they're descended from ancient war dogs. Many of them also have herding or guard genes (rotties have both) that cause them to be suspicious of strangers and bossy towards weak owners. A lot of people are scared of dogs that don't instantly greet strangers with a show of friendliness; people come to assume that's how all dogs are supposed to act, but that's just their nature, not a sign of a bad temper.
