The story is even more sad once you realize that Brown was a puppy this whole time...all those horrible things that happened to him, and he wan't even fully grown ;-;

I kept hoping during gameplay that Brown didn't actually die and I hoped that I was mistaken at what I saw.😔

I like how ''Good Ending'' it's just you remembering and accepting all the bad things that happened to you, kind of implying running away from your hideous past isn't the answer and despite all the disgusting things behind you there are good ones like Brown, and keeping his memory is a good thing, though painful.
Guess that's the price of love,friendship,etc...
I think the biggest thing for me is that all is appeased, those children were horrible but didn’t deserve to die, be abandoned and completely forgotten. Wendy got what she feared most, to be alone forever and Jennifer lives on not forgiving Wendy, but feeling sorry for her and the other kids.
Rule of Rose is such a beautifully written story.

The ending sequence where she leave Brown and shackled him made me cry. I know it's kind of a metaphor for her to always remember Brown (which also sad), seeing an innocent creature being locked up just breaks my heart. Waiting there, not knowing why, when, and how long.
this is psychologically sad. T.T all the characters died and are only exist in Jennifer's memory now. that is why she locked Brown and Wendy so she would never forget them. OOOWWWWWWW so sad.
This is evidence that video games can be art. Every time I watch the last scene something beautiful happens to my soul. I happen to live with a seven year old pup, and my motto is Jennifer's "I will protect you, forever and after, until I die".
Same here. I got a new Cocker Spaniel pup after my old one died at age 13. I'll make sure to care for him and protect him.
Even after 10 years, the ending of this amazing game STILL gets to me...
Jenifer and Brown remind me SO MUCH of my Cocker Spaniel (Rocky) and myself. I got him when he was just 5 months old and I was at age 11 in 1996. When he died at age 13 in 2009 due to kidney failure; that was the HARDEST day of my life. The game's play-through is Jenifer's struggle with her memories of what happened to Brown while confronting her fears that plagued her at the orphanage as a child in the forms of the Imps, Mr. Hoffman, Claire, and Stray Dog. Understanding this critical part of "Rule of Rose" made me realize that I was also struggling with my own guilt for what happened with my dog; blaming myself and constantly thinking about what I could have done to prevent his death (like Jenifer's case with Brown). In the game, Brown is helping Jenifer confront her fears and help her accept what happened so she can move on without being sad or feeling guilty, like a "Spiritual Guide" in her memory. I actually had a dream of my dog 2 years after his death of him sitting next to a white Cocker Spaniel puppy. The following week; my mother is holding a new buff Cocker Spaniel puppy in her hands for me when I came back home from work (Never expected it nor did I ever tell her of my dream until after I got my new "Rocky 2" friend). Rocky 2 is five now and I'm currently 29. We love each other like bros, and I play "Rule of Rose" every now and then with him by my side. I know he won't live forever either, like we keep telling ourselves they will, but learning to accept that things, like Death, happen is part of the process of living. My big thanks to your video, the developers of the game, and ATLUS for making it possible for the game to be released in the USA after many attempts were made to ban it. : )

Lost my dog to kidney and liver disease a year ago. He's been with me since I was a boy. Buried him in the backyard under a tree After seeing this, I cried my eyes out and cleaned my dog's grave marker, which I periodically do to keep the marker pristine and to reaffirm my eternal affection for him.
I have never reacted to a game this way before. It's criminal that it isn't more well-known. It has a pretty captivating story to tell.

@Andersen William - You're not alone. The same thing happened to me when my dog was dying due to the same illness and I had to make the decision to putting him to sleep at the vet. The HEARTACHE of it was too much for me as well that I lost 30 pounds during my struggle to accept it.
The ending of this game TRULY gets to me, too. But in a way... It helped me realize that my dog wouldn't want me to be sad for his death (just like the way Jenifer's hallucination of Brown at the beginning cut-scene of the game tried to tell her). It's hard, but it can make you stronger within. : )

Reading the wiki article on this game I'm ashamed that such nonsense "controversy" happened in 2006. 'Goal of the game is to torture, rape and kill a little girl'. And no-one even bothered to check if that claim is bullshit or not for months.
pisses me off because it's probably a huge reason why Rule of Rose is never gonna get a remake or anything. I'm sure there are many people that would go apeshit.
It's really a sad ending for Jennifer and Brown. As Brown died, it has been part of Jennifer's psychological unconsciousness memories whenever she dreamed about Brown. Because of the happenings during the orphanage massacre, these suppressed memories have left a huge scar towards Jennifer as we can see she was teleported back to her pasts.
So Wendy was obsessed with Jennifer and that ultimately lead her to kill the puppy brown, and bring a crazy man to kill the other children? O.O That is one crazy kid.
The game shows how a psychotic mind in that of a child CAN be even MORE frightening than that of a grown up.

This beautiful ending has had me crying for days now. The whole thing with the beautiful love shared between a sad orphaned girl and her little orphaned puppy and how it was tragically ended, but the love never stopped and will forever live on in her memory where her good boy lives on forever... protected and loved...
my heart is so heavy...I have no words to describe the bitter sweet beautiful empathy this whole game and ending has made me feel.
When Jennifer closes the door in the end... Makes me happy and Sad at the same time :')

Thank you for uploading this playthrough, I've played it a long time ago and my Ps2 can't function anymore, it brings sweet and bitter memories strangely, it's one of the things that made me appreciate melancholy feelings in stories, I also love the fact that for you to know about the characters or stories a little bit, you have to explore it and not simply follow where the game wants you to in order to progress the game, it what made me appreciate it more and more as time went on, there's not many psychological horror in nowadays game, at least not to the point where this game made me feel at that time :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this play through! Rule of Rose is a beautiful story. I know many people condemn it as horror game but it's actually just storybook pretending to be a game (and a wonderful storybook at that!) It's simply a perfect mix of art, storytelling, and music. It's unfortunate that the game didn't sell very well and even got banned in some places, but I just know that it holds a special place for the few who have played and seen it for what it is. It's a real hidden gem.
The ending always makes me sad.

Don't remember if I said this on another video or not, but thanks for the upload. I remembered this game being mentioned in another youtuber's video years ago, and I really only got into survival horror this year, so I was going to buy it, but it was almost $200 on amazon.
Man can't believe im subscribe to you for 10 years because i remember waiting for you to upload this playthrough, now got the chance to play the game and finished. As usual the video really helped me thank you.
The gameplay is hit and miss but the story is really great with lot of symbolism, the ending is really bitter sweet. To bad because a lot controversy (which is lie and not true!) The game became underrated.

I'm wondering what if Wendy was the real Joshua. It's hinted that Gregory was a cannibal who kidnapped children, killed them and eat them. Gregory also wrote that Joshua would be sick like how Wendy was. Maybe Joshua went to the orphanage to escape Gregory and disguised himself as a girl. Then he returned to check on Gregory and found Jennifer.
Wendy saved Jennifer.
The more I think, the more mysterious this game becomes.

You got loads of descriptions I missed but you missed quite a big one on the plaque outside of the front gate of the orphanage.
What a great game, would like to know what happened to the adults leaving the orphanage apart from that the story makes sense to me now.

Y'know, there's always been one problem I have with the storytelling that is never really answered.
A lot of the thoughts Jennifer has are about Mr. Hoffman. Yet...they're all kind ones, saying that he was proud of his younger self, and was a kind person, so...what the Hell happened? I mean even if he was raping the girls back then, (Which I doubt), that wasn't the only sin Hoffman committed, he was also extremely verbally abusive and neglectful. If he was once a nice teacher...what broke him?
it was heavily hinted to us as the players that he was in fact sexually abusing the girls..it’s not outright said because most of it is explained through text if you roam around.
Once Upon a Time chapter, Jennifer comments Hoffman used to be a "kind and admirable teacher," though he supposedly made a transition into a cranky and perverted man in the time that Jennifer was at the orphanage. Because of the chapter's reflective atmosphere, it is possible that Jennifer is trying to remember the positive side of him.
The wiki has a view different views on what ' broke ' him.

here's another video for you to make, if you already haven't: Resident Evil 2 Claire's A scenario with the bonus key you get in the beginning which opens the locker in the save room and allows Claire to change clothes. then choose something that does not have a jacket. I remember I cried so hard when I saw Wendy running to the gate and asking Jennifer not to leave her. Damn, even now after so many years I still couldn't hold my tear when I saw it.

Not a huge fan of horror games, but I really loved this one.

I think Thomas bore a grudge against Mr. Hoffman. Or so many say. Thomas had some quirk where he likes to draw railway tracks. Jennifer mentioned that he did not like to create a destination. He wanted the tracks to go on eternally. Mr. Hoffman would get the children to clean his drawings. In retaliation he doodled on Mr. Hoffman's photo.
After I watched the entire gameplay of Rule of Rose I realized the story was much deeper than it seemed on the surface and Jennifer was more interesting than I thought at the beginning.
I liked that this game has various symbolism and metaphor used for the characters' past.
I thought it was interesting that even the airship being one of the main settings and the rubbish bin being used as Jennifer's inventory had a backstory as why that was the case.
I enjoyed watching the gameplay and the story is brilliant.
Of course the game has it's issues but I still enjoyed watching the gameplay and learning more about Jennifer's past and the mystery surrounding the orphanage.
I would purchase my own copy if the price of Rule of Rose wasn't in the thousands.
I'm just really sad now, thinking about all of those children being brutally murdered, all because one girl was so totally selfish and crazy!!!

Yeah, I know why Mr. Hoffman left, I was just confused as to why Martha and clara soon followed. Besides, Mr. Hoffman just leaving like that without finding a replacement teacher was totally irresponsible and off the wall! Then to think that Clara and Martha would just up and leave all those children by themselves, with no replacements to look after the children! That's what i meant when i said i still don't understand why they would just leave like that. Those are small children that they left to fend for themselves! Food, water, electric, heat etc. etc. Like, what the hell were they thinking! Did things really get that bad?

I Just finished, Rule of Rose, the good ending made me cry I can't stop, thinking about the tragic that happened to the orphanage. This game is a Masterpiece It almost can, compete to the silent hill and other psychological horror game, expect to the combat system... However also the game to itself is unlucky because, of its controversy it got banned, and I cursed those peoples behind for banning this masterpiece I hope they burn to hell forever. I'm still hoping we can get the remake of this game in a future

Jennifer was the lone survivor of the orphanage massacre and the airship crash "1:13".
Mr. Gregory Wilson (aka Stray Dog) saved her from the accident and treat her as Joshua (his beloved late son) "6:16".
Losing his son was really depressing and drove him crazy.
Wendy (Princess of the Red Rose) helped Jennifer to escape then stayed at the Rose Garden Orphanage.
Jennifer found a puppy (Brown) and suggested that her and Wendy care for Brown together.
She was jealous of Brown. She don't want to share their friendship together with the puppy.
Wendy asked her to leave Brown but Jennifer won't leave Brown which made Wendy angry.
Wendy told everyone (The Aristocrat Club was created after Wendy told everyone about Stray Dog. Because of fear, everyone agreed to follow Wendy) to treat her poorly, so Jennifer will come back to her.
Jennifer scolded Wendy that she will never forgive her for what she has done to Brown.
As well as the members for believing Wendy's lies about Stray Dog (Told them that he comes at dusk under the cover of darkness and devours the children he kidnaps) and being so selfish.
The rumor was made believable by the recent kidnappings "19:02".
Wendy was replaced by Jennifer as the Princess of the Red Rose.
Wendy pretended as Joshua then lured Stray Dog to the Rose Garden Orphanage.
"29:48 Wendy turned Mr. Gregory into Stray Dog"
In the end, Jennifer remember everything and decided never to forget again. Even if it is painful. This makes peace with her past and promise to remember her friends.

Yes. Those are the forgotten memories of Jennifer that she tries to remember.
***** Yes, this is pretty much a mash up of her lost memories and the trauma of her childhood. That's why parts of the game take place on an airship, for example, that being the place where she lost her parents and nearly died. As far as the situation with Brown, it's symbolism for her intent to move past the trauma she suffered as a child. She's leaving Brown behind rather then desperately clinging to the memory of what she's lost. That's not to say she won't always cherish the memory, hence the comments about protecting him forever. However, trying to bring Brown out of her memories would mean she's still not ready to accept she lost him and begin to move on with her life.

You can make your own speculation on that though, I always thought Mr Hoffman left because of financial trouble because of the last words that he said on his diary, Miss Martha left probably because she is scared of Wendy of probably killed and Jennifer did say she disappeared, Clara left is the most understandable of them all to me

i get that everything wasnt horrible, but i fail to see how this would be a good end for anything. I thought she was going to take the puppy and walk with him on the leash to the bustop where the man would draw a picture of the two of them.
It's a good end because she's deciding to move on in her memories. Brown is already dead; her locking him in the shed where she first found him is her just saying that she'll keep her memory of him in her heart.
Oh. Totally didn't get that. I thought she had found a new puppy and decided the only way to keep him safe was to keep him a prisoner in the shed. Your interpretation makes more sense

I don't think anyone survived the stray dog, Jeniffer included. Seems to me like this was some kind of purgatory, with Jeniffer being tormented because she blamed herself for what happened and for not protecting Brown. Sinclairelim I thought it's more like the light being Jennifer being rescued after the orphanage massacre. The whole game is basically her memories of both an airship crash and the orphanage massacre, and memories tend to be dramatized with the imps and such.

she is actually 19. the whole game is about having her "re-entering" her childhood because she lost her memory due to trauma. she was abused by everyone and all the kids got murdered and raped. her dog died and the only thing she can do is to "lock" a handful of her happy moments from her childhood inside her memory. the existence of her dog and her best friend is only in her memory now until the day she die.

Jennifer was the lone survivor of the orphanage massacre and the airship crash "1:13".
Mr. Gregory Wilson (aka Stray Dog) saved her from the accident and treat her as Joshua (his beloved late son) "6:16".
Losing his son was really depressing and drove him crazy.
Wendy (Princess of the Red Rose) helped Jennifer to escape then stayed at the Rose Garden Orphanage.
Jennifer found a puppy (Brown) and suggested that her and Wendy care for Brown together.
She was jealous of Brown. She don't want to share their friendship together with the puppy.
Wendy asked her to leave Brown but Jennifer won't leave Brown which made Wendy angry.
Wendy told everyone (The Aristocrat Club was created after Wendy told everyone about Stray Dog. Because of fear, everyone agreed to follow Wendy) to treat her poorly, so Jennifer will come back to her.
Jennifer scolded Wendy that she will never forgive her for what she has done to Brown.
As well as the members for believing Wendy's lies about Stray Dog (Told them that he comes at dusk under the cover of darkness and devours the children he kidnaps) and being so selfish.
The rumor was made believable by the recent kidnappings "19:02".
Wendy was replaced by Jennifer as the Princess of the Red Rose.
Wendy pretended as Joshua then lured Stray Dog to the Rose Garden Orphanage.

In the end, Jennifer remember everything and decided never to forget again. Even if it is painful. This makes peace with her past and promise to remember her friends.

No, she didnt kill herself. She remember everything and she accepted her past and move on with her life but never forgetting her past just accepted. That's way she leaves brown chained, its a metaphor, she leaves brown in the past but no forget him and keep going to the future
