Hopefully as more bike lanes get put in, it will get much better. Maybe it’s growing too fast for the infrastructure to keep up at the moment and that’s part of what’s causing the friction.
That's exactly right. Friction easily arises when bicycles start to "encroach" on roads. Moreover, the early bicyclists are often the more daring ones, who in the eyes of many motorists and pedestrians ride recklessly. So, getting proper bicycle infrastructure is important avoid these frictions & accidents from happening. mysustainablefuture Anybody who's ridden a road bike knows to get above 40kph on a false flat needs a lot of power, above 250 or 300W. The fact that you do it on a folding bike is super impressive. In the past, we had no idea how fast you ride, without any speed readings.
The seating position on the Brompton folding bike is fairly upright and the bicycle basket is also giving a fair amount of wind resistance, so I probably can't keep the speed above 40kph for very long. I'll look forward to test it out ;-)

Yes, New York city's transformation into a becoming a more bicycle friendly place is very exciting and serves as a great example for other cities to follow. I know that the city of New York has consulted bicycle planning experts from my country (Denmark) including Jan Gehl, who published the now famous city planning book "Life Between Buildings" (1971) about how to make the cityscape cater to human activity and human needs. Increasing pedestrian and cycling activity is two of the key solutions.
@@mysustainablefuture I take gear ratio seriously. changed each front gear to match my best pedal rpm for each new bikes with different wheel size. The conclusion is if users know more about bikes, they must not choose Brompton which is just a fashion brand.
@@Mike-so4fg Hmmm, I will have to disagree. One of the main reason why I bought a Brompton is that I could get high gearing. My highest gear propels the bicycle 8.6 meters for one full revolution of the pedals, and this means that I can ride fast on the Brompton (35 km/hour) comfortably.
I liked the video a lot, because I've been thinking about taking a device like that for a while, but I'm not sure if you can configure it, for example, I would like to see the bpm. Greetings and keep making videos since everyone is really interesting to me and now with the dasboard ; )
Determining power output by measuring air flow (seems to be a pitot tube device based on the principles of airspeed measurement in aviation) is unlikely to be accurate unless cyclist is travelling on level ground in windless conditions at standard atmospheric pressure. Better to use a pedal-mounted strain-gauge type sensor.
I agree. But the air flow sensor was so much cheaper, so decided to try it out first. The problem with a Brompton is where to place it. Especially for me, as I usually ride with a big bicycle basket in front, which significantly affects the airflow around the handlebar. Hence, the inaccurate readings.

@@mysustainablefuture What size chainring were you rocking. Must have been at least 56 teeth. To go 41kph on a 16 inch bike is amazing. Is this Brompton a 3 speed or 6 speed? And we're you using ceramic ball bearings?
From experience, it makes all your distance readings about 10-15% less. Constantly had to 'correct distance' in strava to get consistent distances for exactly the same journey. Consistency is rubbish with the speed meter. Also, Wahoo Bolt is just so much better value for money head unit that really works well. Garmin Cadence and Heart-Rate monitors work fine with that too And decent power meters do your cadence too. Really having to stop myself from putting a power meter on my Brommie.
Interesting that the Garmin speed meter is so useless. Should be quite a straight forward measurement. Okay, thanks to alerting me to the fact that the distance is given 10-15% too low.
hmm... my experience from cycling and running, GPS-based speed accuracy is also affected by the points in the track esp when they swing wild, like going through places surrounded by tall building, riding close to hoardings. also seem affected when going up/down slopes (seen it more evident when running). having a speed sensor helps keep the reading more consistent (onboard reading) as it is based on wheel rotation (make sure wheel size setting is accurate and not based on auto-detect) so its not skewed by swerving GPS points or zero GPS coverage (long tunnels). but it is also affected by signal drops.
The power gadget is really incredulous, you dont really need it and it is inaccurate. Lose its deadweight. Commuter riding should be simple and straightforward. Good video work though and narration. Please show us your bike if you have not already?
Thanks - and I agree that commuter riding should be simple. I bought the gadgets to show the health benefits of bicycling. So, they can compare the readings to that of their stationary bicycles in the gym! So, the gadgets are more for the viewers' sake than for my own. In this video, the power meter was not correctly calibrated, but once calibrated it should be very accurate. I'm riding a 6 hear Brompton. I'm sure there are lot of other videos online that show info about this bicycle.
Absolute BOLLOX...I think you missed your tour de france calling. The power meter is a con, there is no physical torqing interface with strain guage to produce accurate values. Freewheeling downhill you must be doing 10kilo watts. You are probably doing around 200 watts max.
@@mysustainablefuture OMG you had plenty of time to slow down! And you think that excuses the dangerous cycling you were doing the rest of the video? You'll get hit one of these days. @@andrewwiles3992 Not sure what countries that you are referring to, but it is entirely legal to bicycle on the roads in this video. I'm a practitioner of defensive driving and also a believer in teaching people a lesson, when they break the traffic rules. Case in point, the people crossing the pedestrian crossing despite having a red light (5:46). In such cases, I will not slow my speed, but will be ready pull out on the street to avoid a collision, while passing close by the people. Alternatively, if the car lane is not free for such a dodge maneuver, I will make a hard brake in front of the pedestrian. In both cases, it will be evident to the pedestrian, that they were in the wrong, and the shock will hopefully teach them a lesson to watch out better next time when they consciously choose to break the traffic rules.

What type of gearing do u have? 6 speed or 8 speed? Man...i’ve been using my 3 speed, because of the small gear ratio it is really hard for me to keep maintaining the speed. Thats why i prefer my road bike than bromie haha
I have 6-gears. The highest gear makes the bicycle roll 8.6 meters for one full revolution of the pedals, so it is pretty high gearing. Not too different from a road bike.
In English: Yes, my front sprocket is bigger than normal to get higher gearing
what brand of your dashboard?
Refer to video description text below video
i felt danger ride on the road :(
Looks more scary than it is. Safety first :-)
I am brompton 2 speed owner.. wonder why everytimes watch your video, you can pedal so fast.. now i just know 6 speed brompton gear ratio is a lot higher than 2 speed brompton even though i maximize my chairing size.
Yes, I also ordered the highest gearing Brompton. About 13% higher gearing than the standard 6-speed Brompton, if I remember correctly
Malaysia
Yes, Malaysia
Wtf is that electric how are you riding so fast how much gears does it have
Not electric. Only powered by my legs. 6 gears :-)
@@mysustainablefuture bro very amazed about the speed man.i just got a folding bike too but yours is godlike
@@waatao9856 Well, I ride faster than your average cyclist, so don't feel bad about riding slower than me.... :-)
so much watt for a 30kmh😱
Please take note that the power sensor reading is too high for this ride; see video description
I think the watts are not correct :)
Agree. Also mentioned in the video text
Those power numbers can't be right 1000 watts .... Not even Vanderpool can hold 1000 watts for that long
Yup, the sensor is off. I put that in the video description as well.....
There is a good path, why not use it?
:-)
Just wondering how much does it all cost?
- Power meter from PowerPod (USD199), which is less than half the price of pedal power meters.
- Garmin Edge 520 incl. heart rate, speed and cadence sensor (USD395)
- Virb Edit software (free)
So, it's a bit of an investment, but a good one :-)
what camera recording u used it for this video?
GoPro Hero4 on stablizer
you can cycling 40 speed right
On flat road. Yes, I can, but not for long on a Brompton. On a road bike, 40 km/h is possible because the wind resistance is less
@@mysustainablefuture Would 25KM be a comfortable speed with a headwind on a rolling terrain?
@@sandydennylives1392 Yeah, 25 km/h is a comfortable cruising speed on a Brompton
3 Speed?
6 speeds
That is ridiculously fast for such a small bike.
I like to go fast. And the gearing is high :-)
@@mysustainablefuture
What size chainring were you rocking. Must have been at least 56 teeth. To go 41kph on a 16 inch bike is amazing.
Is this Brompton a 3 speed or 6 speed? And we're you using ceramic ball bearings?
Wow it is fast
Normal to me ;-) But yes, I usually go faster than most other cyclists.
Premium rush : brompton
Yes, good fun!
35 degres ant that pace, man i wanna know your cycling story ahaha
Yes, the hot tropics plus the urban heat island effect = high temperature
woo, almost same speed as road bike.
Yup, I sometimes overtake road bikes 😉
Interestingly an Apple watch will provide most of this except cadence and wattage.
Yeah, sensors are rapidly becoming part of our lives..... monitoring every minute of it!
Garmin Speed Sensor is next to useless for sure. Save the grams. It doesn't work with a Bolt, and that's a much better head unit having tried both.
Mark Mitchenall Okay, Good to know. The speed sensor connects to the Garmin, but I don't see it measuring anything
Okay, will give the speed sensor a second look. It auto-connected, so I did not have to set any wheel size or anything.
life before covid.......
Yup!
Wtf !!! No cars trying to hit the biker for passing them, can’t do that in NYC.
Really?! Sounds like the recipe for road rage....!
The majority of automobile through-traffic needs to be diverted around the CC, not **through** it!
Agree
Absolute BOLLOX...I think you missed your tour de france calling.
The power meter is a con, there is no physical torqing interface with strain guage to produce accurate values. Freewheeling downhill you must be doing 10kilo watts.
You are probably doing around 200 watts max.
Yeah, power readings are definitely too high. In my subsequent videos, I'm getting more realistic values :-)
U take drug u fast
No drugs 😊
dangerous cycling in-between cars on the main road and almost hitting mother and child on zebra crossing, not considerate.
You forgot to mention that "mother and child on zebra crossing" had a red light; see 5:46. So, they were the non-considerate ones, not me.
@@mysustainablefuture OMG you had plenty of time to slow down! And you think that excuses the dangerous cycling you were doing the rest of the video? You'll get hit one of these days. Most countries you'd be fined for taking non-cycling, dual carriageways / high speed roads. Ignorant overpaid expat.
Very reckless!
Not to me :-)
And I subscribe to "safety first". NB. The wide angle video makes the ride look more dramatic that it is.
@@mysustainablefuture Why can't you just stop and wait instead of dashing and squeezing into the tiny gaps between cars and kerb? Sorry to say this but the way you ride some day you are going to hit an opening car door a motorcyclist or someone exiting a vehicle. Or get crushed by a bus.
@@jimmyhor78 As long as it feels safe to me, I'm okay with it. But definitely trying to avoid having accidents.
You are cycling so irresponsibly with zero respect to the cars or to the people on the street.
What part of the video are you referring to? Give me a time-stamp, and I will be happy to explain from my point of view, as I am a firm believer in safety first and showing respect to other people on the road.
I hardly see anybody cycling in your video beside you. When in rome, do as the romans do. This city not suitable for cyclists.
Correct, I am a pioneering bicyclist in Kuala Lumpur. Hopefully, this video channel will help it to catch on :-)
How do you attach the kickstand?
You can attach a small kick stand along the frame near the rear tyre without affecting the fold of the Brompton.
