- I did something weird and way out of character. I created a "Buy Me a Coffee" page. I explain a bit about why I did it, on the page, but I may do a video to clarify things a bit more.

"Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi off of the "Slippery When Wet" album which came out in 1986 and featured, an uncredited, Hugh McDonald on bass. I can't say I've ever been a Bon Jovi fan, but I thinks it's a good song with a great bass-line. If I looks as though I was concentrating really hard, it's because I was.
I recorded this back in 2017 playing the Kramer-Era Spector NS2A through a SansAmp Para-Driver Ver. 1.
Here's an "Unlisted" version using the Guild B-301 which I actually think sounds a little better, but I screwed something up at the end.

As every teenager back then, this song squarely placed me in the rock style.
As every young adult back then, this song made me cautious of massively successful rock pieces, and I started placing Bon Jovi further and further back in my playlists.
And here it is again, with its bassline gloriously upfront, played by one of my favorites bass players on TH-cam.
As every rock fan ever, thanks for placing classic pieces back to our minds. Back to streaming "Keep the faith" all afternoon again, I guess...
He wasn't my cup of tea back in the day either, but we grow and evolve. It's actually a pretty catchy song. I remember hearing stories that he would go through monitor engineers like crazy, because he had a really hard time singing the choruses and would blame them. Thanks for the kind words, Eric!
This brings back a ton of memories Troy! Mid way through The 80's....and almost 40 years later seems I'm STILL living on a prayer at times! I was not a Bon Jovi follower myself but my little sister sure was! I will say this much for Bon Jovi, he is a workhorse for quite a few charities that he and his wife are involved in. this Cat has given much back to his community and beyond while always being humble and accessible. A Very down to Earth person with no Ego which is refreshing. When ever I heard the Wah Wah sound with the Bass on this song I always thought of Peter Frampton when he First Came Alive! I forgot for a minute how good those Spectors sound. Thanks for reminding us all! Quick story: mid eighties and this young lad on his first business trip far from home stumbled into an Atlanta super night club with huge lights, big sound, and crazy dancers in costume with props and everything. To me it seemed like what we all imagined at Studio 54 in its day.I was shook. The soundtrack to this mind blowing spectacle? A new song by a new band with a new sound from Jersey. Yup,Living On A Prayer! First but not the last time I heard this ditty. Thanks for the post man.

Fantastic as always. When they did the very first unplugged they should have had Randy Jackson come out with Jon with NO GUITARS and do it just bass and voice. This bass line is SO MUCH this song that they could have done it just bass and vocals. Where were you and TH-cam in 1980 when I was learning. WHERE?!?

I don't know much about Bon Jovi, but after reading in the description that Hugh McDonald was uncredited, I looked them up and am even more confused. The album credit was given to their original bass player Alec John Such, who was with them from 1983 to 1994. And McDonald, who *actually* played on the track, became their permanent bass player after Alec John Such left? What kind of weird arrangement is that?

What's up, shipmate! Always love your videos (because I love your bass playing, always have). And I'm surprised that you did such a (in my mind) simple song. (and you subliminally added some of those awesome extra "Troy" notes) The complexity of this bass line is that it maintains the E minor riff over the cord changes (C to D) without ever changing to support those chord changes. The dissonance is the brilliance I guess, from a bass player who got fired from Bon Jovi because he was deemed as being "sloppy" in live performances. Any way (I digress), I'd love to see you do a bass "cover" of an original song. (Is that and oxymoron... cover of an original song?) How about this one? (link below) I wish I could offer you the track minus the bass for you to "cover", but I can't right now. This is a brilliant bass line. I probably couldn't reproduce my parts (exactly) on these track that we did if I had to. (So, no expectations) But it sure is fun! Hey Floyd! Thanks. I don't think a bass-line needs to be complex to be interesting and "interesting" is the criteria I use when selecting a song to learn. That definitely wasn't the case 30 years ago. Yeah, supposedly he was sloppy... and then tried to take a loaded gun on to a plane. It's funny, because a studio guy actually recorded this track and that guy is now in the band. Oddly enough, I have a playlist titled, "Originals" where I've covered some of the things I've played on over the years. Unfortunately, I was never really good at keeping an archive, so I don't have access to very much of it. I'll mess around with it. You wouldn't have an mp3 or something of it, would you? @@TJH3113 A quick read up says Alec was sloppy so Hugh was hired to play the parts. It's said even live Alec was sloppy and forgetful when it came to arrangements. I guess they didn't believe in fire and re hire.
@@THEATREofPAIN270 Sounds about right. With regard to being forgetful, if I remember correctly, Alex forgot that he was carrying a pistol while trying to board a plane. I think that was the straw that broke that camel's back

Do you record the bass sound and the music playing at the same time or do you listen to the music in the headphones and record the bass only and then overlay the music when producing the video?
I’m actually playing along with the song and recording live, directly into the camera. Some mixes just come out better than others. I don’t do any special EQing.

Thanks. My arm just naturally goes into the position it needs to be to put my right hand into position. It varies from bass to bass.
Every time I hear this song, I think about the glorious time I met Robert Plant (2018). Great conversation (oh his love for Bonzo is still palatable) but at one point he mentioned his son (Logan) doesn't listen to Led Zeppelin. A little shocked, I asked him "what does the son of Robert Plant listen to" he mockingly *and I mean like in a neener-neener tone* sang "whoa...we are half way there"... my daughter (12 at the time) was about to say - my Dad listens to that!! But I quickly shushed her to avoid any possible RP ribbing. But deep down this is a super memorable track from my early HS years that brings great memories.

@@Criminal.Lawyer It looks like I was playing both notes on the A string, but it could actually be done on the open E string as well. Since the notes have no real "musical value" (they serve more of a rhythmic purpose) you could do it whichever way is more comfortable to you. In my case, the open A string is more comfortable. Hope this helped.

I watched your “How I make my videos” video a long time ago and I appreciated it. But I still don’t know what you’re listening to while you’re making the video.
Fortunately (or unfortunately) I bought a bunch of recording equipment a few years ago. Still don’t know how to use it. At least I haven’t used the microphone stand as a coat rack yet.
You’ve made a lot of videos that I still haven’t watched yet. I will try to catch up. The first one I watched was “Living in the Past” by Ian and Glenn and the rest of Jethro Tull back in the days. Rock on!!
