I normally listen to high gain metal music but this is definitely relaxing and chill to listen to. Probably some of the most beautiful playing I’ve heard in a long time.
I love your style, feel and tone man. I was just trying to decide between an sg or paul. Wasn’t expecting to be so inspired and touched by your playing. Thanks for this!
Serious but, I love Les Paul's when someone else plays them. They also look great on someone else. When I strap one on everything is wrong about it. Weird.
My Les Paul is one of the best sounding guitars I've ever played. Absolute holy grail tone. No exaggeration. ..but I have the same issue. Looks fine, but it just feels weird. (and it's a hefty 10 pounder too) ...which is why mine is almost strictly a studio guitar. Lol Live I use my Jazzmaster and SG. I like the longer feeling scale and easy access to the entire neck.
Had this feeling too (with my Chibson )... so I decided to get rid of what annoys me: first, the heel corner came off, well rounded for better access to higher frets, second: I carved a belly-cut, so it fits snuggly on my ribcage, third: put 09 strings on it for smoother bendings... voila!! a pleasure to play it, can't put that "black beauty" down
Mahogany LPs are attractive aesthetically, but as heavy and uncomfortable AF. The neck to body balance (CofG) is awful. Weight notwithstanding, it's OK standing, but sitting, the bumps and curves are in the wrong places for me so they won't sit comfortably. I had an SG many moons ago, but don't recall it being uncomfortable like LPs are. Alder Strats and Ash or Alder Tele shapes work for me.
SO good to hear the versatility of the SG at play here - I absolutely love mine, and it (they in truth!) is my main guitar purely because it is capable of SO much! Such a great demo of both instruments
Nah, LPs are usually preferred for the looks. They do sound big but that's not always useful in a mix, many are really heavy and what could be off-putting when playing one is their lazy attack due to their build.
Absolutely killer playing, style, and tone. Both guitars sound epic... prefer the Les Paul tone in your video but in person both sound epic... which is why I also have both. I play my SG more oddly... even though I always preferred a Les Paul and didn't like SG's much until I bought a Gibson SG 61 reissue on a whim because it was one of the only guitars I didn't have in my collection... and now I can't stop playing it...
Chris buddy I gotta say ... and I am sure it goes without saying ... you can really make a guitar sound so good . I watch a lot of guitar videos and you are definitely at the top of the list as a player. Very well done
Tele is my weapon of choice. Got a Les Paul recently but haven't bonded with it... yet. And Chris, your expressive playing makes everyone on here jealous AF
I must admit that I really like the way You play. Great tone coming from Your fingers, no matter what guitar You play on. Listening to the licks You play is just a pure pleasure!
The only thing stopping me from owning an SG is the existence of the Les Paul. I would always be wanting the bigger brother. Yeah I know its heavier and upper fret access isn't as good but since when has that stopped anyone? For me, the LP looks better, sounds better, and, in the way the controls/jack is positioned, designed better too. Perhaps the only other reason to get the SG is cost. The SG is a USA built Standard Gibson model for not stupid money. Cheers for the Vid Chris!
Well done! that's one of the best in terms of hearing the SG/Les Paul differences. Most comparisons are too gainey and you can't get the SG tele-ish brightness vs the Les Paul nasal honk.
BTW. Shopping between SG and Les Paul.. so seriously grateful for your vid here. Nice to hear someone demonstrate them in some pure tones on a slower, vibeier kick. Never owned a Les Paul before, but thinking it may very well be time based on how well you make it sound brah
Chords sound thicker on the LP, even with minimal distortion on the bridge pickup. Chords on the SG have a more crystalline sound, even with moderate distortion on the neck pickup. Switch to the neck pickup on an LP and you have the fattest sound of any electric, be it Gibson, Fender, or anything between. But a wide open SG bridge pickup with maximum overdrive will absolutely sear through your soul.
I like a nice LP however I much prefer the signature SG growl and better cut through the mix. It's hard not to be heard when using one and hard to put one down when playing it. I was never sold on the looks of the SG, but its tone, playability and featherweight make it pure dope.
Great comparison. Both sound beautiful, both well made guitars, would be honored to own either really. As far as sound goes my unique ears are liking the sound of the Les Paul more and it's very hard to articulate why. LP seems maybe thicker, smoother, ahhhh. . .IDK how to say it. I"m sure the pups although both HB are somewhat different right? Then there is the neck and feel.
Nice video. One thing a lot of people fail to mention is the neck’s position relative to the body, and to other guitars. On the SG, it is further extended from the body than most others guitars. Playing by feel and as a “native” Strat player, going for an A chord results in a badly fingered B flat chord. I have to extend my left arm just a bit farther, making playing it feel weird and uncomfortable. I love the sound of an SG, but for me the feel is all wrong. I don’t have the same problem going from a Strat to a Les Paul.
Seems my guitar playing patients always come in sooner when they play their Les Paul's, especially in gigs. Neck, shoulder and back pain. So as a non-manipulating Chiropractor, I prefer the Les Paul. As for Chris playing, I liked when he played the one with six strings. Sounded great.
When you need it, the Les Paul will give you that sustain. They also sound a tad bit warmer. But the SG feels so much more comfortable and seems to get most of the sounds you can expect from two humbuckers that you will mostly use.
My Epiphone les Paul is the best set up, nicest feeling guitar I own. It sounds great too, I think an upgrade in pick ups would improve that even more. I use my Gibson SG custom with the band but believe me I've never played a guitar thats better than my Epiphone LP.
Very tasteful playing, as always. Definitely prefer the sound of the LP, both clean and overdriven: warmer, fuller, somehow conveys more emotion. Can’t get used to playing a single cut guitar, though, so for me it’s the 335 al the way.
I have both. The only difference in sound to my ears is the pick ups. Pick them both up, play them and buy what looks or feels right to you. I love my SG Standard the best but both are excellent guitars and you won’t go wrong with either.
I played an SG for years... when I came across a good Les Paul there was no looking back. Warmer, fatter and Bluesier is how I can best describe. I still like SGs though their not heavy.
I own several of each and I have to be in a real certain mood to pick up a Les Paul but I’ll take an SG anytime. Nice playing and I love that you threw a little Badfinger in there!
I have a 70s burny sg and believe it feels and sounds better than every other ( nowadays) Gibson SG i have played. It has a nice balance on it and i really like the variety of sounds that it covers. In the Middle position it sounds like a strat. It's amazing
The LP is so complete in "sound" though so back breaking in weight and physical balance. The SG is so physically comfortable though not as complete in sound as the LP...such is life...give a little to take a little.
Been listening to you now for about 3 months. Gotta say I love your tone and your candid and down to earth attitude. Do you think you could do a lesson sometimne on "Cause weve ended a lovers" by Jeff Beck. Love the channel 👍
In 1968 I wanted to trade my Gretsch Nashville for a Gibson Les Paul. I went to Sam Ash in Hempstead and spoke to a salesman. He said that he could get me an old LP if I really wanted one, but suggested that I try an SG as it was so much lighter and had the same hardware, neck, and pickups as a LP. I did, liked it a lot, and bought it, brand new. I used that guitar for the entirety of my early professional music career and reluctantly sold it ten years later when the neck was just about to fall off. I should've had a re-set done. Anyway, I often wonder just what LP that salesman could have gotten me. Oh well...
I'm getting the sg . It sounds warmer and slightly fatter and brighter . Seem to get more bang for your buck. Plus when you gig it doesn't break your back with the weight .
Thanks for the videos. Totally in the SG camp. Do you have the tone knobs down by any chance? They sound a bit muddy -- especially the LP. I used to be a LP guy for the longest time, and it was the only guitar I would play, until recently when I switched to the SG -- and I'm in no rush to look back. It's more comfortable to play in a set, records clearer, and gets me 95+% of what my LP RIs or Customs could do. Thanks a lot, Just subscribed.
love the channel, did I hear a rumor that you were going to be producing a DVD with Licklibrary, saw the column in the online magazine they do, which was great I'm assuming there is more to come
I love my Les Paul's and SG'S...I use my 1970 Les Paul 3 pick-up custom for all of my heavy tunes,my 1968 Les Paul standard for classic rock tunes, then my 2011 SG 61 reissue is my main, the go to guitar..Then my 2018 SG with 3 p 90's you can really get a Fender tone as well, pretty cool !! I have everything I need for my home studio 😊✌🎶🎸
The Les Paul to me actually has a little bit of a twang. Sounds great with blues, which is what I personally believe Les Pauls were made to play. Great vid!
Lovely melodic hypnotic ecstatic fantastic bombastic clean playing. Liked the sound of the SG more. Any issues with the neck dive thingy all reviews talk about? Or was it not so obvious with SG Standard model as the neck heel is a bit different on the standard than on the other models!? BTW you deserved a big fat subscribe man. Keep on rocking man 👍
That can be a problem if you are playing standing up, but TBH it's massively overstated most of the time (individual guitars may vary) and it's not that hard to fix by moving the strap peg to the horn, or just using a wide leather strap.
Both sound great, and beautiful playing. I think the weight behind the LP gives it a "complete" tone. the SG can get some of the "spank" which has had me playing Teles for decades. I prefer the SG with a slight margin, and the price difference makes it a definite choice for SG. Liked and Subbed!
I own both. I love both. They are as far different from each other that they are almost completely different instruments. The SG is a feather and sounds crisp. The LP is a cinder block and sounds thick and heavy. The only draw back to the SG IMO is neck dive but with a little time behind it that is easily overcome.
It's funny in that so far all the Gibson SG's I've tried had no neck dive whatsoever. What most had in common was the thicker neck and longer joint + vintage lightweight tuners. Weight anywhere from 2.7 to 3.5 kg. Only the SG copies from Epiphone or other brands did misbehave a bit with the neck diving. Also, the worst case of neck dive I've seen was ... an Ibanez RGA. Go figure.
SG. LP is too heavy in the body for my aging frame (SG is head-heavy but you can adjust and adapt for that). I have a hot-rodded Epiphone Pro with Gotoh P-90 'Buckers (coil splittable), Gotoh machine heads (tuning pegs) and a better nut & bridge (can't recall where we got those from, I had a friend install all this). With my MIM DP Strat and upgraded Affinity Tele (your first guitar, I believe?) I am pretty happy with the tones I can achieve with those 3. In my youth, I was always a 335 type. Maton, Epiphone. But my first guitar was actually a MIJ Vox SG copy. That thing was built to last. Alas, it was stolen back in '92. I miss that black hunk of Rawk.
It's very rare that electric guitar noodling alone sounds so pleasant and naturally melodic. Bravo!
I guess its more accurate to call it improv
@@Otis-Isom Not necessarily.
It's not exactly noodling, more of a guitar solo.
@@Olegstuff21986 I would say noodling since it's not played over a progression.
I agree. This dude is one hell of a guitarist.
I normally listen to high gain metal music but this is definitely relaxing and chill to listen to. Probably some of the most beautiful playing I’ve heard in a long time.
Wow dude, your playing is amazing to watch and listen to. I'm deciding on buying a Gibson and I'm slowly being converted to the SG.
Thanks for letting the guitar breathe. Helps to really hear its qualities.
Absolutely beautiful! Nice to hear the SG played in this way, the tones are gorgeous on both guitars.
Just such expressive playing - just love the tone and feel - both guitars and your playing - just love it.
I just bought a 2008 SG, and I love it, the tones sound warm and crisp, with a touch of gritty and wild when needed.
I love your style, feel and tone man. I was just trying to decide between an sg or paul. Wasn’t expecting to be so inspired and touched by your playing. Thanks for this!
Thanks Chris... Enjoyed presentation very much... including choice of melodies to demonstrate tones of both guitars ...
I’m glad to hear an SG played so melodically and not the heavy AC/DC trap that everyone can’t seem to avoid.
Serious but, I love Les Paul's when someone else plays them. They also look great on someone else. When I strap one on everything is wrong about it. Weird.
Derek Biggerstaff I have the same problem.
My Les Paul is one of the best sounding guitars I've ever played. Absolute holy grail tone. No exaggeration. ..but I have the same issue.

What a pleasant surprise to hear the playing on this clip! Very nice
God I love pauls. Dude, I know you’re a strat guy, but that thick sound just suits your finesse.
I prefer the SG. And I'm surprised that most of commentators as well. Usually people prefer LPs. The SG suits more your style and dynamics.
I feel the same way about Strats.. Jimmy H. Eric J, Stevie Ray V, ect;.
Vv
Nah, LPs are usually preferred for the looks. They do sound big but that's not always useful in a mix, many are really heavy and what could be off-putting when playing one is their lazy attack due to their build.

The SG....for every point. I just like how it's a wee but crisper. snappier. More sensitive.
I think the sensitivity comes down to the pots....a lot of LPs have 300k pots whereas most SGs have 500ks.
Bad Finger to Bad Company! I was a teen in those years and hearing a young guy looking into that time in guitar rock is pretty cool!
