Not wanting to take anything away from these beautiful and historic instruments, the sweetness of the sound is all Chris. He sounds that good playing a $200 Squier, truly amazing indeed. I'd go so far as to characterize Chris's playing style as mesmerizing.
Chris, I'm an Argentinian guy living in Perth, Australia. Thanks to you and your channel I could practice my guitar skills and my english. I love Friday Fretworks and the way you play. Cheers!
i had no idea J Mayer was a blues guitar player, I always thought J Mayer was a Woke Pop Star. When somebody says Blues guitar i think howling wolf etc... Certainly not J Mayer.
@@joshmuz9018 Maybe he would outplay Daniel, I'd be disappointed if he didn't, That's how John Make's a living unlike many of us here on TH-cam, I guess the real question here is why are you coming across so Angry? idk? Are you one of the TH-cam cops? God Bless.
One of the tragedies of my life was selling my 62 Les Paul (SG body) after someone knocked it over at a gig and cracked the headstock (after all I was 13). After selling it to a friend who had a pretty good repair job done on it, I bought a 64 Telecaster which I still have and love. As an aside, Gary Tallent of the E Street Band, a friend, worked in the Music Store and convinced me to buy the Tele.
Pure jewels ! The souls and hearts of the men who built these guitars with their hands only are bound to the sound and the breath of the instruments, and your playing sir give them the respect they deserve.
It’s really amazing how you came to develop your own recognizable sound. Even more so, since you’re a blues player. You’ve come to stand out easily, and that really is your main strength, I think. Simple, dynamic and overall pleasing and beautiful finger tone. Well deserved recognition, Chris.
Absolutely beautiful sounding guitars! Of course with you playing them makes a huge difference! What an honour to play The Beast! I love Bernie, big fan of the older Whitesnake! Love your playing!!!
Chris, not my first comment on your playing.... touch, feel, tone, you have it all. You are a must watch guitar player...look forward to following you for years to come and will get to a Buck & Evans gig one day. Inspirational.
Nice to see someone playing these guitar's clean for once, you can really hear all the wonderful nuances from each instrument. Great playing and review, probably the best on TH-cam.👏👏👍 Thanks for sharing 😎 🎵 🎼 🎵
They all have their own character, that being beautiful. The SG has amazing sustain, it has probably been played the most. I love your set up, perfect to my ears and your style of playing, even through an iPhone! Thanks for sharing this with us, it was an interesting enjoyable session.
man your style and Derek trucks are really similar just the way you both slide into your licks ,, its that Duane Allman push pull thing ,, just lovely ,, absolutely voting for u
Dr. Reason Thank you! That’s vindicated my decision to go clean. I was expecting a barrage of ‘gain it up!’ comments but as you say, it’s how they were initially designed to sound 🙂
Bernies 'the Beast' - One of the most iconic Les Pauls surviving today - Greeny being perhaps a bit more so but its still such an Iconic guitar. Whilst the Les Paul Single cut shape we know and love wasn't the 'first' (check out the Merle Travis Bigsby guitar from the late 40's), you cannot deny its impact and historical importance to music and guitarists the world over!!
BAM Mözzi yeah I agree. Greeny is probably a little bit more iconic. Just a little though. While I’m a fan of Metallica. I kinda wish a great blues artist owned it and not Kirk hammet. Although he said it was one of just s few guitars he saved before his house burned down in the wild fires
Bernie tells a story that the 59 is supposedly Paul Kossoff’s guitar that he bought from Eric Clapton !! If so some of the greatest blues/ rock in history have been played on that guitar. Chris you just added to some of those. Awesome playing mate !!!!
I smiled to myself after hearing you play the 1952gold top,you said you were struggling to find a comfortable place to put your hand I wish I could play like that when I’m uncomfortable....no wait I just wish I could play that Definitely going to vote for you 🎶🎶
Beautiful complex tones, lovely touch! I’ve been a Strat/Tele guy for 25+ years...but I’m falling back in love with humbuckers...thanks so much for sharing these awesome guitars with us!
Just finished watching your video of the 57 Gold Top vs the R7 and it led in to this video. I liked how you presented those 2 guitars, and then I saw this video. Wow, the sound of that 52 is just so unique and amazing. No complaints on the others, each had their own sound, but this 52......there is something about it. Keep doing what you do. It seems like a really good following you have here, and for good reason.
Well for a non TH-camr you've done a grand job!! I think I'm in love with that 62 though - it's an incredible guitar and feels so good under the fingers
I love the 1962 Les Pauls. The '62 custom shop with Grover tuners is quite good and as close as you can get to the original. fantastic playability and tone.
Bernie is such an great dude and the beast what can one say that hasn't been said. Very few things in life I lost after but that and greenie......hay if your gonna dream go big. Of course any of these he dosen't want...
I owned a ‘52 Les Paul at one time. It was badly finish checked and the bandleader at the time thought it was ugly and didn’t like the tone so I wound up trading it for something else. This was around ‘71-‘72 long before collecting became a thing. At that time is was just another old guitar. Even with the finish checking, it would be worth well into five figures now. C’est la vie.
It goes without saying that you have my vote already mate, and your appearance on that list is no accident. These three guitars of Bernie’s are incredible and there’s no taking away from ‘The Beast’ as probably the one guitar that I would love to play one day more than any other. Tonally, I find myself slightly drawn more to the ‘61(?) but its hard to say because its all about the feel under the fingers, so I wonder if you had a particular favourite, provenance aside (if that’s even possible), that spoke to you the most? Wonderful appearance on TPS today. See you tomorrow at The Cluny!!! (Gig of the Year)
i got to play an early no ser no 52 gold top and i had no problem playing it i was surprised! action was just right to get under and dig in and believe me or not palm muting was not a problem. the owner was amazed that i liked it and offered me a good deal..i was like 15 yrs old and had no way to cover the 7500$ but i should have begged borrowed or stolen the cash because it was pristine no finish checking never heavy played and was 8 lbs give or take..my dad had a legit r9 that he sold in the late 70s for 2k and a 64 strat,my dads had some amazing equipment over the yrs i built my first real guitar from his parts collection and i still play it regularly!
All beautiful, but for me the 52 wins hands down with it's piquant and crystal clear middle position tone. Exquisite composition by the way Chris, thank you.
I own a ‘54. Had Westwood Music replace the tail piece with a bridge and tuning pegs with Grover’s. Still has the same pickups. Westwood did the Eagles guitars at the time. A lot of old guitars were converted at that time. A no no now, but let’s face it, the pegs looked cool but couldn’t stay in tune.
Haha. With great difficulty! I rested the camera on the floor and slowly panned up. I'm still learning on the job with this whole videography thing...but thank you :)
That thing you do with holding the pick in your forefinger is pretty cool and unique. Did you learn that from someone or was it a necessity is a mother of invention type of thing?
Of course Chris buck answered my question 3 years before I asked it.every other TH-cam video is comparing epiphones and Gibson modern studios and standards.thanks
Hey Chris. P47 of Bernie's Bible has the Les Paul (SG) as a 61. I remember there was some confusion about this at the time you were filming it - is the book incorrect?
My buddy John met Les Paul when he was in the Les Paul trio. Said he was awesome and also dirty old man, and you would not believe the shit he said. He got pissed about monitors or something and got real pissed lol
My buddy had a cousin who dates a man who knew les Paul's god son and they once sent a message to each other via pigeons and it said les Paul once cussed at a man in private. Cussed!!
How about teaching us that song you played at the end on the SG? You seem to have endless variations of that tune. You need to make it a song and release it. Just you and a guitar.
Good god!! If Bernie’s beast ever went up for auction.... the sky’s the limit. One question. As far as playability not tone. How does the beast compare to your Yamaha? I’ve recently played a nice Yamaha and it feels great in the hands. My Sg is probably the best neck I’ve ever played
Hey Mr. Buck. Your videos are very informative and you create such awesome soundscapes. Would you tell us what kind of Amp it is that you played in this video? Cheers😊
Concerning your comments about Les Paul, a project I am involved with may soon have me selecting some of the bits of kit from Les' garage for display in the Ampex exhibit at the Redwood City Museum, as well as, eventually, an online "virtual" museum. His involvement with Ampex stretches back to 1947 or so and helped lead to "sound on sound" recording, "multi-track" recording and so much more. Ive got one, to play is truely unbeliebable. First time I picked it up a friend owned it. but the feel. when you know . you know! had to have it

The 52 sounded so beautiful I almost Cried.Your playing is incredible!
A superb way to spend 20 minutes! You do the guitars justice.

I had Buddy Guy’s “Feels Like Rain” streaming through my head during that improvisation.

This is very soulful guitar playing that I've heard in a long time.
I HEAR AN EASTERN VIBE IN YOUR PLAYING......SOME OF YOUR SLIDES AND SEMI BENDS GIVE IT THAT SOUND! BEAUTIFUL!
Just found this channel after your TPS show appearance, when you played that '62 I entered a wonderfull trance-like state shame it ended so quickly.
Great demo, 59 is just sounds incredible but the 52 sounds fantastic as well and the 62 has an amazing sound.
That SG... something about it... legendary.
find me anyone that squeezes that much dynamics out of a set of humbuckers and i'll be VERY surprised.
Interesting hearing a famous les Paul that has been through a few great players hands and to hear such a different tone in yours from it
As an aside, I’m a big Bernie Marsden fan. Especially the album he released as a tribute to Peter Green. Great album.
And an appropriate opening amp tone to show off the real reason why the LP was popular in it's time. It sounds a lot brighter than most expect.
Dr. Reason Thank you! That’s vindicated my decision to go clean. I was expecting a barrage of ‘gain it up!’ comments but as you say, it’s how they were initially designed to sound 🙂
