Hey everyone! We're Eric Lagerstrom and Paula Findlay. We're both professional triathletes; we train for and race triathlon for a living. Thanks so much for subscribing and helping us keep triathlon fun.
    #thattriathlonlife #triathlontraining #paincave
This week Paula started running again after a stress fracture, using the Lever running device. The key to returning to running after a stress fracture is running a percentage of body weight and slowly building to full body weight and full run volume. The lever running device works exactly like an alter-G treadmill, for a fraction of the price. We also open water swim, and debrief Eric's race at Des Moines 70.3 and what changes need to be made for better performances later in the year.

The highs and lows, eh!?! Ya’ll probably know this very well but you’re so much more than an elite triathlete and for me not being a triathlete via TTL I get a glimpse into your lives as elites but just Paula and Eric. Buying a home, renovating, racing, blood tests, time with Flynn, food, coffee . . . simply you! Love it and look forward to more racing and other life stuff! Thoughts from Victoria, BC.

I imagine it’s already on the program, but I’m a fan/proponent/EVANGELIST for DWR: when I transitioned from 21.1km (NYRR 5 borough Half Series… MAN I miss those race courses 😭😢😥😪) to the 2009 MCM in addition to Shifting my Friday long Runs from 10, 12.5 & 15 to 15, 17.5 & 20, I did a 90 minute deep water run after my Masters Saturday Morning LCM practice. I probably also helped by prioritizing LISS over Fartlick.
Gratitude for sharing your insights & journey. The mindfulness on this channel has been therapeutic & inspiring. May your creative reservoir always be in the path of the deluge 🌊

Missed you guys last week, I looked but couldn't see you anywhere? Just broke off from today's stage at the Tour, where if you have been watching there has been all sorts of carnage! Already yesterday on day ONE! nIce to see you both back. Injuries suck!! Always frustrating when you cannot do what you want in training, but as you already know you just have to supplement the injury with training around the injury, as Paula says swimming and biking. Knowing the injury will eventually heal. Get well soon Paula. Stay safe both, see you next week, much love from the UK.

5 weeks of resting after stress fractur will not be enough, get an MRT first and see if the fracture has closed, otherwise you will run in endless troubel! Jut got an female athlete with the same problem in the calcaneus, after 8 weeks the fractur is still visuable in the MRT pictures, so 6 more weeks of rest. Biggest problem in stress fractures is to start too early with running again, because you dont feel any pain while walkin around. Fill your Vit D and Calcium tank. Greetings from Germany

Note that Paula said she has a stress “reaction” not a stress fracture. The former can lead to the latter, but they aren’t the same thing.

    1. Paula looks ripped!
    2. My guy! You have it figured out, sorry for your troubles. Never forget, “When people see things as beautiful,
    ugliness is created.
When people see things as good,
    evil is created.
Being and non-being produce each other.
Difficult and easy complement each other.
Long and short define each other.
High and low oppose each other.
Fore and aft follow each other.”

NOT medical advice in the slightest, but having had a really tough soreness day in and out and chronic pain in my legs and having consulted with a rheumatologist (who wanted to put me on insulin and all that fun stuff), I decided to give Boswellia/Indian frankincense a try before going down the hardcore medical route. Now this may sound like a pitch from that friend on Facebook that got into a pyramid scheme, but it helped. Like a lot. The anti inflammatory powers of the boswellic acid really did the trick. So, maybe before going off the deep end medically and in support to the new strengthening routine, give it a shot. Again: NOT a medical professional, just a guy that got a big help with his major pain through it. And thank you for the honesty in the video, showing the tough times. It´s inspiring!

thanks for the tip, Lukas, we'll look in to both of those options. We're not set on any sort of supplementation regimen at this point, we're just trying to get as much information as possible in case there's anything obvious we should look at. We're definitely with you on going as natural as possible 👌

@@ThatTriathlonLife All the best for that journey of discovery 👍🏻 Your blood tests may show where to supplement too. It was eye opening for me to see a total lack of Vitamin D for example, which I could not get to normal without a supplement.

In Eric's last race, his swim was good, bike was competitive to the rest of the field, the run was a huge dropoff. Hope he gets it figured out. I'm sure its frustrating.

    • @ThatTriathlonLife
      @ThatTriathlonLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

To be totally honest, the bike was pretty far off what I've done up until this year, but it seems like everyone struggled on this bike course, so it didn't really show. Definitely extremely frustrating with the run though.. I've had a lot of great run sessions lately.

Yeah I actually do it myself every time. The key is to get the top lined up and basically one tooth of the zipper engaged, hold it in place with your hand while using the other hand to pull the zipper down. Squeeze your shoulders together the whole time. As I type this I realize you have to be pretty flexible to pull this off 😂
