Woodturning Walnut Shells into a Lamp

- Welcome to today's woodturning project! This is my second project using walnut shells and this time I decided to make a lamp. The lightbulb I used was too bright and my camera wasn't able to pick up the colors correctly. However it was a pretty interesting project.

First though..."Wait, why did he even fill the shells with resin if you won't be able to see them?" - Then after initial lathing and the revealing of the glorious purple within..."Ooooohhhhhhhhh". GORGEOUS!

Was hoping the purple light would shine when light was on. But could be a camera limitation.

I start out saying “oh, I’ll just watch a few minutes at the beginning and then fast forward to the end to see the finished product”. Nope, I end up watching every fascinating minute!! Never having turned a piece of wood in my life I find myself, at almost 70 years of age, wanting to become a maker of these beautiful pieces.
Exactly what I was going to say.
It's never too late to give it a try. Look for the video about Lissi Oland. She took up the craft after her husband had died.

Just looking at that lamp, I would never have guessed it was made using walnut shells. It's very interesting.

I'm feeling real jealous. Being in my late 60's and being a female I was not allowed to take shop in school. Only home economics. Your skills look much more interesting than setting a proper table. I love your projects. Thanks for sharing.
What is stopping you starting now? There are maker spaces all over the place, many if not all offer classes in how to use the machines they offer access to. They are usually very open and friendly and the folks there love to share their knowledge. Okay right now with this virus hanging around isn't the ideal time to start, but as we get back to normal, check one out. Visit during one of their open nights, see what's on offer. This time next year we could be watching your videos.

I was 11yrs old in the early 80s and I was allowed to switch from cooking and sewing to woodwork and metalwork. I had always been very handy after helping my father around the house. But on my first day in the woodwork class I realised the boys were very uncomfortable with me being there, so I went back. I'm sure I would have ended up learning a craft had I stayed.
Same here; late 60s, and had to take "Home Ec," while my brothers were offered Shop (neither of them took it). I like all things home, but Mom and Dad taught me all that when I was still in my single digit years (when I was ages 6 through 9), including cooking and baking, housekeeping, etc. I wanted to take Shop because I really enjoy power tools, but oh, no, "girls don't work with stuff like that!" (said by the school counselor---my parents wanted me to take Shop, too).
Now, at 68, I can indulge my love of power tools to some degree while living in my apartment (drills are wonderful things!), and nobody "corrects" my thinking in regard to them.
@@jb6712 I didn't give up altogether either. I've done a lot of DIY (see my channel). But I wish I'd stayed in that classroom and gone on to learn a craft and earnt my money using my hands, making art/objects... My parents knew I was good with my hands but they never encouraged it. My mother always wanted me to get a professional 'office' job. Children should be allowed to develop in the areas they feel compelled. Maybe some parents of young children will read this and remember it :-)
What a stunning piece ... fall leaves are one of my favorite things and you showcased them with creativity, wonderful proportion and beautiful effect. Good inspiration for me to keep learning how to turn and eventually combine with epoxy. Thank you for sharing and for your commitment to a noble purpose.

Very creative project. The colors - both wood and resin - are great and the brightness is an easy fix by stepping down to a lower watt bulb. If 15 - 25w equivalent LED is too bright, then older incandescent bulbs in the 15w range (usually for ceiling fan or appliance applications) would make for a great accent light that would let the resin colors provide a great accent.

I was really apprehensive about this nut thing but it actually came out a beautiful piece. Technically, I would get some exhaust hole or something. Even a LED light bulb will eventually overheat after a long time ON with such an enclosed space. Wood and resin are very bad heat conductors. That's why lamps usually are opened at the top and bottom. Still a very beautiful piece!

I was thinking he needed a pattern of holes in the top. Perhaps like a doily? So that any heat could escape but it could also make an interesting pattern on the ceiling.

Мы в школе на уроках труда примерно такие ночники мастерили только на две и на три лампочки. Красиво, когда сделано своими руками.
