  • Ep. 239 - The Moment Is All There Is
    In this recording from 1995, Ram Dass explores the nature of time, especially as it relates to aging, and shares how his guru helped him see that being in the present moment is all there is.
    This episode of Here and Now is from a recording of a study group on aging hosted by Ram Dass in 1995.
    Ram Dass begins his exploration of time and aging by looking at the nature of time from both the domain of the ego and the domain of the soul
    He examines the perspectives on time we hold throughout our lives in this culture, from being fully in the moment as babies, reaching for the future as kids and young adults, thinking of time as money in middle age, and finally clinging to the past in our older years
    Ram Dass reads from a book on aging that he’s in the middle of writing, sharing a tale of why time seems to work differently in India and how his guru helped him see that being in the present moment is all there is
    Finally, he talks about working on letting go of his personal history and the struggles he had with boxes of memorabilia he’d collected over the years
    “And they talk about gaining awareness is like snatching the pearl of awareness from the dragon time. That’s one of the mystical ways of talking about what awakening and enlightenment are. It’s freeing your awareness from being entrapped within time. Not that you don’t use time, but you’re not used by it.” - Ram Dass

    There is so much division . It's so sad to see. My heart breaks in the world today. God is teaching me to be still and to listen to the world. And also to listen to myself . How do we approach what is going on inside of us and outside? It starts by listening. Ram Dass taught us that.

    • @alexiarohdin879
      @alexiarohdin879 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      So much division, it’s hard to know what to do. To tell everyone to be quiet and listen? To speak up? To travel somewhere (Israel, Palestine, Ukraine, Africa, Yemen..) and actually help? To give money? To simply work on oneself? On one hand it’s all perfect but on the other hand it is all going straight to hell. For me, I raise my daughter alone and I try to be kind and learn and grow. But I don’t know. Maybe we should all be doing more?

      The tv has brainwashed everyone that why the division is so bad. Social media also. Turn off the news for good it’s all nonsense.

      @alexiarohdin879 Omg, I struggle with this too! I have a picture of a certain political figure that I dislike next to a statue of the Buddha as a reminder to love unconditionally. But it's hard when discord comes from every corner of the world. The dualism of human culture is VERY seductive. It draws us into a seemingly endless cycle. But to be awake to our lives doesn't mean to be asleep to the world. And it doesn't mean to supress our emotional and psychological experience either. It's hard to know what that looks alot of the time. But it is a continual practice of surrender. I feel ya! I'm right there in the" middle way" too.

    This is so widly relevant. So, Im only 50, however, I have a genetic eye condition and have been losing sight. And what I have been going through is almost exactly like what is talked about for people struggling with mortality. For the past couple years, I have gone through versions of "shut in" and talking more about the past and not much about the future. The timing of me watching this video exactly lines up with my now awareness about what I was doing, without judgement and now its time to get back out and enjoy the life I have now, with less sight, but with more peace than ever, now. Vision loss offering gifts. New journeys, loving slow.

    With I all I have said, done, thought and felt, what can I do in the present moment for good? What's done is done. Is there anything I can do in the present moment to remedy my past behavior? I've caused so much pain to myself and other beings. I see my actions for what they are; selfishness that is rooted in ignorance. Do I just accept the karma as it comes?

This is their life’s work as much as it was his. They are why it continues. Tuning in to their bhav is a beautiful segue into the talk. They hold the sacred space, and bring the talks into the digital world with heart, and a lot of time and effort; it’s an offering to us, a gift they share. I’m grateful to them. Funny how I used to be impatient. I think they set the tone and vibration.
