- In 1996 Brian Gilbertson sang both the Australian and Sri Lankan National Anthems at the Australia Day Test match at Adelaide Oval. It was the first time a visiting national anthem was sung at a sporting event on Australia day. This practice is now a tradition. The weekend Australian reported “..his performance saw the Sri Lankan cricketers jump to attention....a Sri Lankan fan hugged him, saying his attempt was ‘better than I can do and I can speak the language.”

Please don't compare singers. Our singer Umara apologized for her mistakes. They were unintended mistakes. Leave it at that. Like Brian she sang the anthem not according to the Indian-Sri Lankan style, but that's ok. Even the army, navy, and airforce bands play it using the western music style at every independence Day ceremony!

Thank you Dinie. We have a strong Sri Lankan community in Adelaide where this took place. A Sri Lankan family, the Classen family helped me study the phonetic delivery of the anthem. It was a very emotional day and was the first time a visiting country anthem was permitted to be delivered with the Australian national anthem. It became a tradition since then and all of our international sporting events present both anthems as an exercise in good will. Bg

Your voice is a gift from God. You are blessed. Really eye opening for Sri Lankan's. When foreigners speak Sinhala and sing . Some Sri Lankan forget their original native language when they live in a foreign country and when meet someone your own country. Many pretend they can't speak Sinhala this was an good example for people like them. These is my true life experience.

Thank you Gihan. I learnt the Anthem from 2 weeks before the Test Match which took place on Australia Day that year. It was the first time a visiting team's anthem was sung at an event on Australia Day and has since become a tradition. I was coached in the Sinhala version by the late Dr Risien Bartholomeusz who was introduced to me by a Sri Lankan family in South Australia. They spoke it for me. I sang it. They corrected me and I took it away and learned it. I returned a few days later. They were happy and I went out and sang it. I will treasure the experience. Bg
