Kantian ethics has great merits especially in humanising others, in opposition to Machiavelli and pleasure based ethics. However, it lacks stratification or hierarchy of moral values - some crimes are objectively worse than others. Further, it can reduce us to mechanising our daily lives and not taking into consideration the myriad moral grey areas we encounter. We can also ask how Kant decides an action is moral or not. Where would he stand with LGBTQ? This is where we need the Creator of morality itself to tell us what is objectively moral and grounded in reality (discussion leads to Euthyphro Dilemma and moral realism vs idealism). We need consequentialism in deciding certain moral decisions in order not to cause unnecessary harm to ourselves or others. Ultimately, any man made moral system or ideology will have holes in it because it reflects the myopia, biases and limits of the created, in contrast to the abundance of the Creator of all.

I had a question seems you might help me understand. I have hard time understanding deontological ethics. Let's say if there is an active shooter who has taken hostage 100 people and you have a gun. You are in a position to take down the shooter easily. According to deontological ethical philosophy, the action of taking down the shooter is wrong so you may not do it. On the other hand, the action of taking down the shooter may also mean protecting lives of people then it becomes morally right. I just can't understand a concrete example of deontological ethics.

30:50 I think Hijab missed what the brother was trying to say. Suicide and lying are two points or examples mentioned by Kant as being unethical, in the scenario offered by the brother, hypothetically what is the moral thing to do when the person says that he is going to kill himself, will he commit suicide while keeping his words but then act unethically in killing himself, or would he act contrastingly to his words (id est lying) while not committing this unethical act of killing himself.

    • @abdurrashidfarooq6089

I believe Ustaz Human responsed based on the fact that a lie means to speak khilaful waqi' (against reality), in that case a lie would only be in relation to the present or the past not the future. Because his statement "Im GOING to kill myself" is an intention for the future and not a 'khabar' per day hence he's essentially describing his current mental state which isn't really a lie unless we know what he's feeling at that very time. Hi, can anybody clarify? Since deontology ethics have its limitations, can I use utilitarianism/ consequentialism to resolve such limitations. For eg, the lying scenario. Since I cannot lie under kantian ethics, can I adopt utilitarianism to justify lying to save my husband from being killed? So is it possible to merge the three ethic theories (virtue, consequentialism and kantian deontology) instead of treating them in isolation? Idk if I worded my query correctly but is it possible to view these 3 theories comprehensively?

ofc you can. that’s literally what 95% of the atheists do. a real small number of atheists is either that or that. most of them mix both approaches to cover up the defects that both approaches have. but that’s only to help them in implementation (real life situations). Theoretically those 2 approaches are not compatible and will never be able to mix to 1 superior ethic. bcs they contradict each other but in implementation many people still do it. the problem then is- at the end of the day, they only choose which approach „feels“ right in which situation. so basically the mix of both is worth sh“t. its just an excuse to justify their actions
