    If you want these headings to show up for future documents, it's essential to click the button 'New documents based on this template' on the first page of the Modify Style menu. If you don't do this, they won't be added to your heading selections. I spent hours setting up headings by a far more complicated method, and lost them because I didn't check that button. This video is the easiest way I've seen of setting up numbered headings, and they actually work!

    Thanks Kenneth. Unfortunately I didn't discover your excellent video before losing several hours of my life swearing at MS for making it so difficult just to get a numbered list behaving and counting correctly. Back to basics. You're a life saver!

    Excellent job Kenneth! Concise and clear direction. Be sure you select the correct numbering format in the outline list to prevent the multi-level issues in the next comment by Donna below. I had the same issues until I followed Kenneth's directions. There were a couple of headers in my document that I had to switch to Normal Style then back to my correct header style. If this doesn't fix the numbering, right click and select Continue Numbering; you may have to use the indent icon on Paragraph to adjust the style, but should correct the problem. As an additional note, you can add color bars and interesting header changes if you play around with the Styles: Modify: Format: Border (or shading).

    This is an incredibly well done video. No self-promoting garbage, no pompous verbiage, just simple and to a point explanation. (It used to be so easy to do in the past). Thank you, Mr. Bellew! Any other videos this good?

    I had to "Clear Formatting" for the whole document before this would work. I presume the default Style prevents the multi-list levelling from working. Thanks for the vid, Kenneth.

    How do I say "Great Job". You explained this so perfectly that anybody who does not get it, won't get it. I am working on a 125 page document that I will need to run a TOC and I can't wait to go to work tomorrow and get this done in no time. THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH!

    AWESOME. I spent all day on Saturday going over this using other example. Each time I could get it to work but when I saved the doc. something strange would happen (like the last tiem the number list turned into a black box. Then I would have to recreate. If was like it was so complicated MS Word would just collapes in somw manner. I tried your solution and it was so easy and worked like a charm. THANK YOU!!!

    I understand how to create the multi-level, but when I need to go to the next numbered heading i.e., 2 then 2.1... it won't change in the 2.1 level it continues with whatever the last number in 1 level 2 was. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

      Delete formatting from the headline, press the headline formatting that is the upper one with numbering, press on the number and press tab to increase intent and now right click on headline 2 to match with the formatting. Now when you use headline 2, it will automatically connect with the numbering and has intent.

    Is there a way to insert a bullet section in the middle of a set of outline numbered paragraphs?

    • @SJQuirke
      @SJQuirke 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I do is enter the bullets in the numbered sequence then select the list and 'clear all' selection (from the menu pane you get when you hit the drop-down under the "change styles" icon from styles menu on home tab. then select the bullet icon.
      There is probably a better way but that works for me

    I use a template with numbered and un-numbered headings and they sometimes just go out of whack

    • @HPLearningProducts
      @HPLearningProducts  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good point. To get these in the TOC, you need to select the styles in the Table of Content Option dialogue. Which is located in the References tab > Table of Contents button > Custom Table of Contents > Options and then select the style names.

    • @newoptionz
      @newoptionz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kenneth Bellew Ok, so it is actually 'reference tab'>click'Table of contents button'>'insert table of contents'>'options' - then make changes as required.

    Nice tutorial. Just what I needed. However, when I show the Navigation Pane (selected under View-tab), these styles do not appear. I managed to make the TOC work, thanks to the comments below, but I don't know how to make the Navigation Pane work. Is it because these styles are not defined as Headings?

      Found the solution on superuser.com/questions/810243/how-to-add-custom-styles-to-navigation-pane-or-change-them-with-vba
      You can change it within the style. Edit style, go to Format -> Paragraph -> Outline level

    Nobodu explains how to set up the styles for numbering subheadings without showing the number in first level. If you have Chapter I, Chapter II and so on, you will need to number your subheadings: 1.1 1.2... for Chapter I; and 2.1 2.2... for Chapter II, but you don't wanna show 1. Chapter I nor 2. Chapter II. I've been looking for how to do that, and nobody on the internet explains it. Is it just me who has that problem?

    Hi, Kenneth, Thanks for the clear, concise explanation. It was a big help. Unfortunately, I got pretty far into creating a complex document before I ran into a problem: Cross-references don't work for anything but the default Heading styles. The same is true for using Chapters in Figure titles. The custom headings styles don't appear in the pick lists. A google search finds this has been a known issues.for years. :-(

    • @rickaroberts
      @rickaroberts 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! I discovered a bizarre workaround: Change the heading back to the default Heading , Create the cross-reference, Change the heading back to your custom style. The cross-reference will still work. Unfortunately, this does not solve the Figure numbering problem.
