Oh man, kind of similar, but not due to a volumetric misunderstanding (kind of a long read).
A couple years ago before Christmas, my dad and I were making Krumkaker (Norwegian waffle cookies). He heated the iron and I made the batter.
When the batter was done, my dad checked the consistency and thought it was too thin. So we added a little more flour to try and thicken it, but it was still too thin. We ended up adding about 2-3 times as much flour as the recipe called for, but it wasn't any thicker than when we started. But that's a lot of flour. So we decided to try making a cookie and see how it turned out.
It burned. The batter was still too thin.
My step-mom came down to see how it was going and we told her about how baffled we were that the batter wasn't thickening.
She looked at our set-up and said, "Where's the flour?"
    I said, "Right here."
"That's not flour. That's powdered sugar."
I, who does not bake often, accidentally grabbed the wrong white, powdery ingredient, and neither of us noticed the different consistency. In my defense, the containers weren't labeled.
So we made sugar cookies with the sugary batter and started over for the Krumkaker.
I then got them a label maker for Christmas, which they both found very amusing.

Well, in 2017, a family member of mine was supposed to visit me with their significant other + some of their side of the family, so I could meet them. When I asked them how many more people I had to add to the table, she responded 20.
I found that a bit strange, but hey, I have the space. So I went shopping, and cooked, when the day came, for 20+ people.
When my relative and their significant other arrived, they were 3. They did not meant 20 more people, just 2 additional guests, it was a typo.
Needless to say, we ate a lot that day, and leftovers were given as gifts, haha!
I still ask for confirmation since that day, always

I made a pie with 5 egg yolks and thought to myself, “well then I’ll make my own meringue with the egg whites”. Found a recipe with only 2 egg whites and thought, “can’t be that much harder to basically double”. I never made meringue before. I don’t have a mixer. With these two hands I spent 75 minutes ferociously whisking egg whites and sugar in a small mixing bowl, eventually moving on to a giant mixing bowl when I realized that meringue gets VERY BIG AND FLUFFY the more you mix ferociously. But in the end, I had a deliciously tangy lemon meringue pie and a lot of extra meringue that I baked into cookies. ‘Twas an experience I will never repeat, but a worthwhile reward.

I was making a cake with my girlfriend, who doesn't normally do anything in the kitchen. I was asking her to help with assembling the ingredients. One of the ingredients I said was "2 teaspoons of vanilla extract." Didn't think much of it until I tasted the finished product. IT WAS SO UNBEARABLY SWEET. I asked what she did. She recited all the ingredients back to me and then paused at the vanilla extract. Turns out she used 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract.

8 tablespoons of chili powder is half a cup... 😬
Bless mama and papa Georg for helping with the extra chili powder! Good news is that taco seasoning is delicious. I used leftover taco meat in an omelette once and it was divine.
As a kid, I used to make lemon chess pie every Thanksgiving. One year, my mom was helping me and she poured some vinegar into a little cup so it would be easier for me to measure out a teaspoon or a tablespoon or however much it called for. I just grabbed the cup and poured the whole thing in. We had to dump it all and start over, but we still had pie at the end of it all!

When I was a wee chiclet, maybe ten or so, I loved whoopie pies and wanted to make them myself.
So I followed my mom’s recipe, got the batter whipped up, and she came in the kitchen to check on me. She gave the bowl an approving look and swiped up a bit for a taste test.
She sputtered and coughed and immediately went to the sink to gargle/rinse out her mouth. I was horrified. Turns out I’d somehow read the baking soda measurement wrong, if I’m remembering correctly I did a tsp/tbsp thing too… and baking soda tastes absolutely ghastly lol

Alright, I've got a couple similar recipe mix-up stories:
    1) Once my dad was giving my aunt a recipe over the phone for cake frosting and he read it as butter OR shortening when it should have been butter AND shortening. My aunt ended up with some very thin frosting
    2) I was making cinnamon rolls and the recipe calls for 2 different amounts of sugar, a little bit goes into the dough, the larger amount is for the mixture that gets smeared on them with the cinnamon part. I did not pay attention and put a cup of sugar in the dough rather than a couple tablespoons

this is kind of similar, one time I left a recipe for potato, ham, and cheese croquettes which are breaded and deep-fried for my mom to get ready so when I got home from work we could do the breading and frying. So she looks at the list of ingredients which include the stuff for the breading, doesn't look at the preparation instructions, and just puts all of the ingredients together mixes it up, and calls it good. So all the stuff that was supposed to be on the outside of the croquettes is just mixed in with everything. It was edible but it wasn't very good. So in light of that your mistake wasn't that bad.

During the Summer I usually make a lot of "tomato salad" (tomato, onion, and garlic in vegetable oil with some seasonings). Now normally when I make it I triple the recipe so there's some for about 3-4 days (usually how long it keeps in the fridge), and it got to the point where I wrote down the tripled recipe so I wouldn't have to do mental math while chopping food. Now a few times when I'm making it I'm dead tired at the end of the day, and a few of the ingredients get tripled (again), so there have been times where it's super salty, or super garlic-y, and there was even a time when it was mostly onions instead of tomato. At least when I'm just making it for me, I don't have to fix my mistakes, I just run with it and try out the new "recipe"

"Welp" indeed. I've 2 similar stories, both involved making some of AB's recipes.
Story number 1, I was making some of AB's chocolate bread pudding and made a mistake about the size of the blender & pans we had. suffice to say that the end result was inedible & a waste of ingredients.
Story number 2, T'was making some of AB's Cocoa Mix (Do you see a pattern) and on the final step, adding some cayenne pepper to taste, I added to much. Not enough to make it completely unusable, but enough to make it too spicy to have as often as I would have liked and most of it ended up going to waste.
Suffice to say that I haven't made those recipes again since, though I generally don't have an issue following a recipe, just seem to have trouble in the less than direct instructions or eyeballing sizes.

This is a story about one of the worst things I've ever eaten and comes courteous of my father. When I was a kid my family went camping every summer, mom was always the one who packed up all the food and dad did most the cooking, which in retrospect is how it all went wrong. So one year we get to our site get everything set up followed by a light dinner then go to bed, next morning as usual we wake up to the smell of bacon and eggs (dad's an early riser so always had breakfast on the go before anyone else in the camp ground was awake). All seems normal as the rest of us stumble out of the tents, in various states of preparedness and set the table, sit down butter the toast, pour the OJ , plate up our food and take a big ol bite of our scrambled eggs all of which are immediately spite out!
See my dad makes eggs kind of like Stephen, low and slow with salt/pepper little bit of hot sauce except at the time instead of butter he used oil, which for camping was stored in an unlabeled container. Not usually an issue except this morning dad was up before the sun and in his haste to get things going and out of courtesy for our neighbours didn't turn on any lights save the one directly over the stove. All of this combined meant he didn't realize he'd grabbed the dish soap (Sunlight for those curious why the colour wasn't a tip off) instead of the oil, he hadn't stirred it enough nor had the light to get anything besides semi normal frothing and dear mother nature combined with his coffee covered the odd smell. That aside let me tell you there is not much worse then soapy lemony spicy eggs bubbling up in your mouth first thing in the morning.
Lesson of the story kids as my family and I have stressed to my father ever since, ALWAYS label your cooking ingredients and wait for the actual Sun to light up your food .

Ok I got one Stephen in middle school my dad and I were making a pizza cookie to take into school when my dad asked me to spray the pizza pan with Pam but what I didn't know is my uncle bought a garlic Pam with the normal Pam and guess which one I grabbed. Needless to say we had to start over but at least we caught it before we baked it.

Don't worry, just pretend you bought taco seasoning from costco!

I think the real problem is tablespoons and teaspoons are dumb measurements. tbsp and tsp look far too similar.

Do you know what happens when you put 1.25 cups of flour in cookies instead of 2.25 cups? You get one very flat, scrapable cookie sheet instead of a dozen eatable cookies.

one time i had to add half a cup of milk for some hot chocolate. I added two cups instead because when I saw the 1/2, i only focused on the 2 and ended up with really diluted chocolate milk.
    would not recommend

I made a similar mistake when making biscuits so I ended up making double the amount the biscuits...which wouldn't be a problem except I was making for 2 and one recipe made 8 biscuits...so we had 16 biscuits. Sigh...we ended up having to freeze half of them. I felt so dumb lol.

I feel like the "taco season incident" is just a little bit of Stephen's mother coming through. He went to make something with "a little extra" and made enough to supply another quarantine

I had a similar situation where I was making chocolate cookie-brownies with my 7 year old nephew, and I gave him the ingredient list and asked him to measure out the flour and chocolate powder. There was supposed to be 2 cups of flour and a cup and a half of chocolate powder. The bowl ended up having 2 cups of flour and “eleven half cups” of chocolate powder, because that’s what he read 1 1/2 to be. I didn’t catch the mistake until after we baked them. They turned out .... fine, just overpowered chocolate brownie under a normal sugar cookie.

So I worked in industrial kitchens for years and now as a result, whenever I cook, I can only make enough for an army. I can't do personal sizes or just enough for four people. It's enough for twenty or more or just myself. No in-between.

I remember when I first started cooking my sister and I had attempted to make a meatloaf and oh boy we didn’t add nearly enough seasoning and the fact that we forgot to get breadcrumbs and had instead just used regular bread wasn’t that wise of a decision but I still ate it mostly because no else would but it wasn’t inedible just a bit bland

When i was a kid i was trying to make mac n cheese, and for some reason i read 1/3 cup of water as a cup and a third, so i ended up eating flavorless macaroni because i had dumped the cheese packet in already.
Also as an adult i tended to make homemade pizza a lot and had some fun mishaps, first i forgot salt entirely and had really bland dough, then i forgot salt until it was already doughy, and the salt couldn't incorporate very well making the dough extra salty, i misread the sauce recipe and used double the chicken broth (that one actually turned out really good and is my go to (especially since we use bullion cubes to make the chicken broth now and the current measurement is exactly how much you're expected to get from a bullion cube)). And one time i managed to forget to put pepperonis on the pizza (we eat pepperoni and black olive pizza), and somehow no one noticed anything aside from it tasting a little different, i only realized that i had forgetted the next day when i was looking at the leftovers

Oh lord do I have a few to help out. First I was making a sauce that asked for what basically amounted to about 1/8 a packet of cholula, yeah I put in the entire packet and the sauce was basically just cholula. I think the best one is I was warming up some cinnamon rolls I had baked the day before. My friend suggested I just put them in for 20 seconds to just warm them up.
I put them in for 2 minutes. No one wants hard cinnamon rolls
