    A tip from a Canadian farmer, If you line your greenhouse with 6mil construction poly with a 6-10 inch space between the polycarb and the 6mil poly, the air trapped between the two layers, acts as a great insulator for winter growing, I hope this tip will help in future winters.

Have you ever tried - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? This is incorrect. If the air-gap is larger than 4 inches, convection currents can form between the insulation layers. This would make the air-gap nearly useless in terms of insulation and by adding more layers between your plants and the sun, less light will reach them

    Another tip from a Canadian civil engineer and gardener...something that I came up for my greenhouse that is amazing. A couple of great ideas I’ve combined. First...double line your greenhouse and create an airspace. (which you have accomplished already) (I use corrugated poly on the outside for snow load and 6 mil inside). next, install a simple geothermal pipe system about 8 ft underground (one days work with a small 4 ton excavator). And last but not least, recirculate the underground air into the airspace that you created. Not into the greenhouse itself. This will keep that airspace at around 10 deg Celsius all year round. You’ll be able to manage your climate inside the greenhouse like a pro. Cheers from Newfoundland.

Hay bails, like the other reply suggested, or blankets, or that NASA reflective tarp stuff is awesome, for cooling in summer too. Your insulated air envelope would have worked if you finished it. And, um, idk …. ever hear of a thing called fire?? lol should have a stove and chimney in there 4sho. Look at pics of winter hunting tents. I'm curious if you still have all your fingers, hehe, cz that 2 knives thing was painful to watch, haha just havin fun, hope you guys are killin it. peace

I could live in a greenhouse and have my Tea or meals in it. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

    One things for sure, you know exactly what you're eating! Never seen an aeroponics setup but this was done really well. Anyone who can successfully survive this past winter gets an A++ in my book. It was the coldest January to April period for most all of the midwest. We had outdoor perennials die that have been there 20+ years. Times are changing and I think a greenhouse is the way to go.

    For heating you can use Solar! Evacuated Heat Panels! Has Acetone inside of them, they heat up even in very cloudy weather, you run a closed loop of Food Grade Glycol through the system, to a small storage tank for the Glycol, for that tiny shed I wouldn't think you would need more than a 5 or 10 gallon tank at the most. From there you run it through PEX Tubing 1/2Inch and you snap on the Aluminium Heat Fins. For every foot you get about 32 BTU's. Just wrap them around the Green House. If your handy, start getting the bulk LED's, and hook up a Solar Battery to power them. You can string them around all the plants. Now you don't have to worry about the Weather, or if it's sunny or rainy or snowing. Your green house is pretty much self sustaining. Good luck.

    I lament that it took me five years to happen upon this video that was made a mere 100 miles from me. This is so exciting! I also grew up on a farm and my dad used to sadly pronounce that the small farm was dying. Here, we see a rebirth! People SHOULD be close to food production to keep a solid perspective on the life cycle and also for optimal health. Jobs and lifestyles that take a person far from the life cycle are unhealthy (as said by someone in marketing for 25 years) physically, emotionally and spiritually. It reminds you what is really necessary for life. For happiness. For meaning. I want to see what his system looks like today.

    I love the tomatoes. This is one of the most overall informative videos I have seen. Maybe you could build a 2nd wood frame greenhouse around the Harbor Freight one, using a higher pitch fiberglass roof to allow snow runoff. This would add a 2nd insulation for your more fragile plants in greenhouse #1. You could put the sturdier plants in greenhouse #2 . Then place hay or straw bales around greenhouse #2 and wrap the sides with heavy tarp. When winter over, throw hay/straw in compost pile. For heat, I prefer chicken heat lamps on alternating timers so the individual bulbs don't overheat. Maybe place them under hanging seeding tray so rising heat will warm the roots while bulb heat will warm lower area. Leave some space between the lights and bottom of tray. If you decide to throw insulation board on roof, you will need some grow lamps. If not, then maybe some extra fiberglass panels on ceiling should stop the snow. Looks damned cold! Bbbbbbrrrrrr.......

    In the winter, why not move your operation into the basement or a spare bedroom? Instead of burning watts just to keep things from freezing, burn those watts running some HID lighting and even extend your growing hours per day. The waste heat from the lights will be utilized to heat your home. :-)

      +Andy H good idea, but if he is already in a duplex, I doubt he has the room to make it as self sustaining monetarily as this inside a house. Using a basement for insulation and providing light when nature doesn't have it are great, but what this video taught me more than anything is that it is possible to aero and hydro where normal potting methods might not survive cold greenhouse weather for my east coast family (I am lucky enough to live in southern cali where our impending cold fornt of 50s weather is like 90th percentile cold here)

    Hi Kirsten, could you provide us with a more actual link to the original story or to the build log or a more sophisticated description of what the builder encountered during the build process? there is a lot of detail you show in your video which is awsome, but there are a lot of detail questions when it comes to doing such stuff on your own.

    Can't see the supermarket giants or the big producers going for this as been the future of farming, Socially and ecologically, it's by far the best way, the most sustainable way, but the companies we buy our food from think of profit first and foremost, we will see homes farming made illegal before it damages profit, keep up the good work guys, i'm a firm believer that if people did their utmost to grow, particular in urban environments we would live in a healthier world

    Great video and love the effort... one problem I have with most hydroponic/aquaponic systems I see all over youtube is the over use of so many plastics (ie: plastic pots, plastic tubs, plastic sheeting, plastic liners, PVC piping, plastic irrigation, plastic hoses, etc...). I wonder if the produce from some of these older green houses would test positive for plastic chemical toxicities and/or toxic traces of roofing shingle chemicals from roof water runoff used to water the plants? I sincerely hope not but suspect it's highly likely. One step forward is never worth two toxic steps backwards. Good luck and continued success! ;)

    • @ArtGardenLLC

      Thanks for the comment! Regarding the system we developed, the materials are 100% medical grade & food grade. The same quality as your milk jugs and pipework thats installed beneath your home/inside you walls. The structure of the growing system is protected by our Patent-Pending Thermal-Wrap Technology. Bet you have not heard of that before us. This thermal jacket is food grade and protects the structure of the growing system against the powerful sun. Other systems cut corners and use raw materials not certified for potable water. Such as fence posts and mysterious plastics "Made In China" The Art Garden took many years to create and develop because we wanted something special. Plus we are not mass marketing Art Garden. It was never about getting rich, only providing for the family and creating something safe. Our system provides the world with fresh quality food that's more nutritional then what the grocery store is hoisting on to the shelves. Make no mistake about it, this is the highest quality system available to date.

    • @__WJK__
      @__WJK__ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Art Garden - Plastics are a huge contamination issue, especially as they begin to degrade season to season. Hoses are some of the worse offenders. Regardless, a lot of brilliant things going on here and it sounds like you're aware and staying on top of the toxicity issues... well done and much continued success!

    • @sweetness6048

      @@__WJK__ that's impossible if they a food grade there absolutely no worries at all when using fsp as this has been proven with food grade safe plastic safe you make it sound like he just used any type of plastic

    • @__WJK__
      @__WJK__ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Aus Grows - Only double checking the safety of the plastics being used, please do not project inaccurate comments that are not true... at no point in my comments or replies did I accuse anyone of using infererior plastics that could leach toxic chemicals into the water, food or animals being raised. My only intention is to question everything that comes into contact with the foods people consume. Incidentally (and my main point) had people in certain areas of the plastics industry been more vigilant from the start and raised similar questions, we would not be dealing with the massive toxic plastic epidemic we are currently seeing, nor would we be dealing with the serious biologic health problems many of these plastics pose , especially as they begin to break down and leach their toxins into the soil and water we all depend on for disease free lives...

    I know this is an older video but figured I'd throw a couple bits of info out there as I've been doing some research on setups I'm planning. So I haven't tested them first hand but there are a lot of TH-camrs out there that have.
    Talking about a small scale systems PH moving up and down a lot, the larger water mass would stabilize that for you, being rain water it's probably fairly acidic anyway.
    Also noticed the heating issues you're having, they have thermal battery designs now that you can setup, before you build your greenhouse. Basically just pump hot air down into the soil below your greenhouse during the summer, then every 6 inches of soil roughly will give you a month of heat in the greenhouse and no heat syncing happening in the floor of the green house, and sense heat rises it's pretty efficient. Definitely something to look into for you up there, it can turn a greenhouse into a -40F greenhouse fairly easily with a considerable drop in heating costs over the lifetime of the greenhouse.

    A suggestion for winter heating ... generally the temp of the earth at around 1.5m below the surface is a fairly stable 15degC = 59degF. You could plant a temp probe at that depth for a while and monitor your specific circumstances to verify. Planting a (rustproof) radiator panel or pipe length at that depth circulating a liquid heat transfer medium to a radiator panel in your green house will bring that temp to the surface, the performance linked to panel size/surface area and rate of circulation, with the only running cost being the pump.

First dig o hole in the greenhouse deep enough to be below the frost line and place a container for your fish with a little water heater in the fish tank the water you push through the greenhouse would help keep the temps up in the winter
    . It would also add more nutrients to your plants.
