So the reason Tommy has a hard time winning is because he's tasting it in a more pure sense... he has no color-induced assumption of what those flavors are trying to compare themselves to. That's my theory, at least. :)
You're right. They've done experiments by having people taste different foods under different colored lights, and they will experience the taste differently. You can try this at home by buying a colored bulb (red and blue)! I remember my aunt once gave me this candy to eat. Out of habit, I always get the red one cause it's the best. Then i tried the different colors and noticed it's all the same taste. My aunt didn't believe me. I had to have her look away and I gave her the pieces to try without sight to skew the results and she guessed incorrectly as to which one was the red.

Tommy - my two boys (nine and seven, both sighted) loved this video. They insisted on trying the experiment themselves (just flavours, not colours). After trying green apple, watermelon, lemon, buttered popcorn, chocolate pudding, peach, blueberry, toasted marshmallow and pina colada, one of them got one right (lemon; the other guessed lime, which was close). They actually spat out the choc pudding and buttered popcorn, which are two of their favourite foods. My conclusion - if you can't see them, Jelly Belly beans don't actually taste much like what they're supposed to taste like! (That, or everything tastes like banana, orange and coconut to kids.) Added bonus - watching them imitate your facial expressions :)

Tommy is such a great sport. he kept laughing through all those wrong guesses. I think it's hard when the real fruit doesn't taste like the jelly bean version of it. I have never tasted banana jelly beans but I'm sure they don't taste like actual bananas. if you don't eat a lot of candy you would have no way of knowing what you were supposed to be tasting. telling him what the flavor was supposed to be would have been fair. he even said that cotton candy one didn't taste like cotton candy.

Someone at some point told him bananas are yellow and that red is a vibrant color, therefore he knows a banana is yellow and red is vibrant.. but he still doesn't know what they look like.. He has said before that he doesn't even understand the concept of color because he's never seen it before.

I read an article about your channel from somewhere, I forget where now, so I came over and you're so entertaining!
Tommy - my two boys (nine and seven, both sighted) loved this video. They insisted on trying the experiment themselves (just flavours, not colours). After trying green apple, watermelon, lemon, buttered popcorn, chocolate pudding, peach, blueberry, toasted marshmallow and pina colada, one of them got one right (lemon; the other guessed lime, which was close). They actually spat out the choc pudding and buttered popcorn, which are two of their favourite foods. My conclusion - if you can't see them, Jelly Belly beans don't actually taste much like what they're supposed to taste like! (That, or everything tastes like banana, orange and coconut to kids.)
Added bonus - watching them imitate your facial expressions :)

Tommy is such a great sport. he kept laughing through all those wrong guesses. I think it's hard when the real fruit doesn't taste like the jelly bean version of it. I have never tasted banana jelly beans but I'm sure they don't taste like actual bananas. if you don't eat a lot of candy you would have no way of knowing what you were supposed to be tasting. telling him what the flavor was supposed to be would have been fair. he even said that cotton candy one didn't taste like cotton candy.
