Don't see the difference between eating the lentils or giving them to the chickens. They get eaten either way. They get lentils and you get eggs. Even trade. You and your family have a great week
I have to admit I am one of those who feels a bit twitchy about feeding the lentils to the chickens, mainly because I love lentils, though. I'd challenge the chickens to mortal combat for them!
TANF stands for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I receive this benefit for myself and three children. Many times I will get the food and preserve it through canning, dehydrating or freezing. I have buckets for canned and shelf-stable items. Thank you for highlighting your food bank pantry hauls so that others will not be ashamed to seek help in feeding their families.
I love seeing people get free food, especially when they're making the most of it. What I really love is that you're spouting lentils for your chickens. Midwest winters are long and bleak for them too and they must be ecstatic when you treat them to fresh greens. Great use of a resource.
Wow, those pistachios are a great blessing! I was at the store this morning and just shook my head at the price of a 16 oz bag of pistachios. I love them, but there is no way I am willing to pay over 10 dollars for a bag😒. I agree. If you need help with your groceries, go get it right away. That is why so many of us donate items to our local food pantries - so our neighbors who need somw help can have good meals every day! God Bless 🥰
Have you ever tried walnut butter? Can be used as peanut butter is. Toast slightly in a pan if raw. Keep blending past the 'crumble' add a dash of olive oil and a pinch of of salt and keep blending till smooth. Add in some finely chopped walnuts if you want 'chunky' nut butter. Can be done with toasted almonds, maccadamias, pistachios, cashews etc. The alternatives to peanut butter also compliment being served with poached egg and salads, topping for roast veggies when they are cooked etc or in place of peanut butter in baking etc
I use the beef stew as a base and add some cans of extra veggies and some more beef bullion, or a bag of onion soup mix. Good way to use those canned veggies no one likes to eat on their own.
I'm sure they'd rather see your chickens make the lentils into eggs than have them thrown into the trash. I used to deliver the food boxes to people and EVERYONE always gave me their beans. That was pre-covid and I'm still working through beans!
My sister has chickens and I told her about your sprouted lentils. Her chickens like them too. I love lentil soup and since I have all the stuff to make it it's going to be dinner tomorrow.
Great video of a great haul. I love the taste of that beef stew. Just wish it had more veggies and meat. Thats great that your chickens can turn your lentils into eggs. The food is gifted to you to use as you see fit. Long before i needed to go to food banks many of the ladies at bibgo were giving me their beans. Before they found out that i like to eat them, they were just todding them.
So I found a cooler with legs on wheels in the trash and made it into a planter. I put a pot of lettuce and green onions in it during the arctic freeze and they survived with a plastic tub over them. It got down into the double negatives a couple nights and didn’t get above freezing for a week. So today I’m planting some lettuces and cilantro in it and I’ve got your videos on repeat keeping me company. I’ve got a string of mini blue lights I might string in it just in case it gets cold again in February.
You can also dehydrate the carrots. Shredded they will dehydrate really fast. If you don’t have a dehydrator you can use your oven. Search You tube for videos on how to use your oven to dehydrate.
Put some carrots in that beef stew and also some more beef if you can but not then just add the vegetables and it does make a big difference little little more salt and pepper
My local food bank is on a Monday at my village church hall. For an hour. Then the next village church hall. (Same minister different churches. At the moment they are giving out a lot of pet food and things they receive. Have used it a few times. As I am on benefits
I am plant based and use lentils a lot. I would be doing a happy dance to get that much. My son (adult) likes lentils added to meatloaf to make it moister and to extend the meat needed. I use the lentils more than any other bean/legume.
So much fruit!! That's awesome! I just used some walnuts to make parsley pesto and it was so good! I would have picked the whole chicken as well. Roasted chicken sounds pretty good! Holy carrots!! That's awesome you got so many! I never thought of sprouting lentils for chickens!! Do you soak in water? I would love to know your process! Thanks for sharing! So happy you got some great food for your family!
I soak them in water for 24 hours in a quart Mason jar. Then I drain them and every day I rinse and drain them. It takes about 6 days to grow to the 4 cups.
You can make lentil patties and even use them to totally replace mince and sausage, look for vegetarian cook books, by adding spices and herbs, they make great meat replacement or extender. Lental soup is a hearty meal with wholemeal bread rolls. With all pulses you should have some whole grain bread product to get a balance of the proteins. ❤
She has said in the past she Sprouts those lentils and feeds them to her chickens so they get Greenery and keep laying eggs in the winter. I know I personally would not eat lentils but I'm not a vegetarian either but that's good that you like them. I've been helping at a church food pantry for 12 years and hardly anyone would take the lentils or the split peas.
I wonder why so many food banks have the identical bag of pistachios they keep giving everybody every week. What a great item to receive. It's such a treat and expensive. What brand is that or what supermarket sells that bag?
TANF is the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. It's a federal program that transfers funding to the states to support eligible programs. (Sorry, Librarian here!)
Soak them for 24 hours. Drain well. Then every day I rinse them and drain well. I keep them in quart jars with the lid loosely on. It takes about 5 to 6 days to get from 1/4 cup to 4 cups.
The requirement vary depending on the pantry. Some have no requirements, some require that you just live within the county they serve, some have income requirements. You just have ti contact the pantry ahead of time.
I've got a short on how I make them. I've tried to post the link but it isn't letting me. Sorry. You can also Google "keto chicken nuggets". They are super easy.
In light of what happened to the sweet lady who would let you in a day earlier maybe it's wise you don't mention when some of the volunteers do special favors by giving you itema rhey are not supposed to be giving out. I know you just want to shout them out because you're grateful but it sounds like the administration running this food bank may not be as accepting of it.
I truly don’t understand the issue with feeding the lentils to your chickens rather than throwing them in the garbage. It’s as though people can’t reason. The chickens need to eat too and they are producing valuable nutrients for you.

I just made apple butter with apple sauce from the food pantry. Canned it, an now I have something for my toast 😊

If you ever do get any fruit that is in heavy syrup simply put rhwm in a colander and run it under water to get rid of a lot of the heavy syrup.
I think it is great using the lentils to feed the chickens... They probably love them..

really good foods to help get thru the month. those mamma jamma carrots will help so much too. have a wonderful day.
Great haul those carrots are huge! Hope you have a great week.
carrot raisin salad would be good - shredded carrots, mayo, raisins, a little salt
Thank you for sharing your videos I find them so humbling.
I've helped at a church food pantry for 12 years they also used to give a chili in those bags people seemed to prefer the chili over the beef stew
I guess the chickens will be very happy. You can ground the lentils down and make chips etc.
Great video of a great haul. I love the taste of that beef stew. Just wish it had more veggies and meat.

I shred my extra carrots, freeze and then add to soups and such.

Nice haul. Good for you!
That is a awesome hall of food.
Carrot cake un UK usually has walnuts in it, so you are all set there. Coffee and walnut cake is another popular combo.

In the winter time we only get to go to county food pantry every 3 months no more until April then you can go to town and county food pantry
I have shredded frozen carrots in my freezer. I let them thaw and then blot them dry before using in muffins.
You got a nice haul! That is a great use for your lentils.
Yeay! You got spaghetti squash again after the explosion! Lol
Such a great variety of food items! Great video!
Awesome blessings

Oooh… are those the delicious frozen peaches? I love those so much!
Yay! They are… the other fruit is great too. It’s good that it’s frozen and you can use them anytime.
Great food haul! Hope everything is going well for you and your family.

You can make lentil walnut loaf!
Please tell me recipes for that.

😍librarians are my favorite people. We are major readers in our house.
Lentil soup is delicious.
you can make carrot salad
I add BBQ sauce and ketchup to that beef stew, and it turns out really good.
Hello my cooking mom and friends
Did the person who suggested freezing shredded carrots suggest putting them in muffin pans to make 'pucks'
Nope but great idea!
It is so helpful to freeze the carrots in muffin cups. I add them to soups, ground meat, and baked goods
How do u sprout lentils ❤
Soak them for 24 hours. Drain well. Then every day I rinse them and drain well. I keep them in quart jars with the lid loosely on. It takes about 5 to 6 days to get from 1/4 cup to 4 cups.
You dont have to say that the lady gives you extra drinks or lentils because you could get her in trouble.
The people who run the food pantry know but I can see other patrons putting up a fuss. I will likely not say anything in the future. ❤️
what state are you in? Are there income requirements?
The requirement vary depending on the pantry. Some have no requirements, some require that you just live within the county they serve, some have income requirements. You just have ti contact the pantry ahead of time.
Chicken nuggets from canned/packaged chicken?
She makes chicken nuggets with that all the time

What do you do with the frozen cherries? I have three bags of them in my freezer and don’t know what to do with them.
Just eat them as is, make a pie, make jam, use in smoothies.

Unfortunately I waited until I couldn’t pay my bills. I recently started going to the food pantries.
So happy you decided to go. That's why it's there, to help people who need it during certain times of their life.
Do you make cakes
Sometimes.
