He’s not even playing to a ghost track or with a metronome. The melodies, accents, the changes and timing. It’s all in his head! That’s incredible!
I’ve listened to the first Foos album again recently and I’m still amazed that he played everything on it. He has to be one of the greatest rock musicians ever. A legend for sure.

Seeing this makes me want to show it to all students of the instrument as a study in groove and subtlety. Yes he goes balls to the wall at times but it all fits. The groove is not lost during the flashy parts, instead it’s reinforced. Too many drummers are all speed during a solo and it sounds like a car accident, or they don’t know when to lay back, be in the pocket, then lead when needed. Just super tasty fills on here that fit fine. A driving rhythm without monotony. Every roll or fill propels the music forward, fitting together like a super glued Jenga puzzle. Learning, evolving, growing. Two thumbs way up!

There's simply few drummers that ebb and flow without losing feel, power, and dynamics of the music. I have almost took my bass off and slammed it over a drummer's head because of overplaying and chaotic playing!

Dave Grohl is a legendary drummer. That's a fact. Is he "technically" as good as, say, Mike Portnoy? No, but his impact in music and culture is far greater. Ask any rock guitarrist in the world who the best ever was. Everyone will say Hendrix, even though there have probably been thousands who are "technically" better than him by now. Thing is: he paved the way, and no one really could match his spark since. It's just transcendental. And let me tell you, I'd rather listen to Dave drumming than Portnoy any day. But crazy thing is: I get to listen to both! It's a wonderful world.

    • @reman81
      @reman81 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

dave had a long drumming career as much as portnoy has...you don't have to take away from one to give credit to the other..they both paved the way for their music genres(grunge, progressive rock-metal) and have inspired millions of musicians for decades. Not through their technique, but through their music composition.
They both had their ups and downs musically, as much as cobain, hendrix, petrucci etc have.
No musician ever had a 100% music career where everything they wrote is a legendary song.
As far as who we'd all rather listen to, it's completely subjective and depends on the person, the mood, the age etc.
Music is not a competition..you can enjoy all of it without preference boundaries.

    • @vitormartins5742
      @vitormartins5742 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@reman81 I agree with you 100%, and wasn't trying to take anything away from anyone. I'm a huge Portnoy fan actually, so I kinda lied when I said I'd take Dave's playing any day, more like MOST days haha. But I think they're both music giants in their own way and role models for a whole generation of musicians.

You can admire the feeling and mastery of music only with visual: amazing!
The sound is so controled too, not very complex compositions but what control in sound and feeling especially with no big mistakes, in one shot (that's not how studio works in general!)!
That's really how good rock works: not very complex but very mastered gestures, a bit like dance: it's very obvious when you look at this performance, EVEN IN A STUDIO!
Here I can remember Bonham, Paice, Appice, Krupa: it is this high family of soul drummers.
By the way very well composed.

Half of them are probably from his own family. Many of them are drummers and they're competitive. I'm not a drummer, but at the time this was recorded cinematography was my profession. This man... He made me sit across from him in this room as this video was recorded. He didn't want me on camera or anything, I just had to sit there, and he filmed it "himself"(meaning he got professional help setting everything up and planning it out, but was hoping I wouldn't find out. He tried to tell me he shouldn't have to pay me much for my work because "he can just film himself". My colleague, who had been hiding behind a one way window in the wall right behind me with a remote to control the camera, came out after hearing this discussion and handed him the bill right in front of me, ending the ruse. Dave asked "why would you do that, she's your competition?' My colleague responded "Actually we're a team, so I can bill you for both of our time you took up for this video.")
Then, after he uploaded the video to youtube, I showed it to a bunch of the fam that were over at the house. The conversation went as follows:
Me: Do you see what your dad made me sit through? And he didn't even have me film it, I just had to sit there. For NO reason.
Anonymous Male relative: [sees the video length] A whole half hour? He's gone too far...
Me: And do you know he's in the latest Bill and Ted movie? He ruined the Bill and Ted franchise! [We shot some scenes for the movie]
Anonymous Male relative: He has to be stopped!!!
(We all sit and watch this entire video, huddled around my phone)
Anonymous Male relative: That was terrible, what was he thinking?
Taylor Hawkins: I am so much better than him.
      Anonymous Male relative: Everybody is.
a daughter: [runs off... to tell on us]
      (Several minutes later)
Dave: You didn't like the video? But it came out so good.
Me: [gives him a dirty look]
      Taylor: [chuckles] nah...
      Anonymous Male relative: ...I'm better.
Daughter, to the drummers in the room: My daddy's a rich rock star. You're just jealous! (apparently unaware of anyone else's status in the room)
My colleague: Don't get too excited, we'll see how rich he is after he pays all of us for our work. (motions to everyone in the room except for the daughter) And I know a lot more people that he owes money to besides us.
      Daughter: [pouts and runs off]
Taylor: Does she really not know I'm famous too?
      Dave: You're not famous.
Taylor: Yes I am! Google me right now.
      Dave: That doesn't mean anything.
Taylor: [angrily pushes his chair in] He's such a jerk.
Anonymous Male relative: I know man.
      Taylor: [walks away mad]
      😆
I guarantee you the drummers in the room called everyone they know and told them to dislike this video.

The first 10ish minutes are so pleasing to my ears. I mean the WHOLE thing is pleasing but man that first 10ish minutes are so impressive with the range in aggressive and soft tones, makes for such a damn great jazzy/hazey, blues/rock sound with that hint of punk in there! Overall just my favorite type of sound and Dave executes it the best!!!
Master drummer, and a master musician at that!
