So they add this symbolic statement to enact the very fundamental of Japanese whole society system, known as 空気 (Kūki), hardly translates to "Air", but meant to be "Situation". There is this "Situation" that each citizen of Japan are forced able to read since elementary. The moment a person cannot catch up with or not able to read "Air"/"Situation" in a room, they instantly became the prey to mock at and set up as a bad example. Here's an example to show how does this "read the Air" works. There are people who work at an office. A newcomer was done with his shift already so there's nothing more he needs to do in the office. So he must be allowed to go home already, right? No. He have 2 option so he not shunned by his whole coworkers. The 1st one was pretending to do some work in front of his desk until seniors are done with their works, or the 2nd one is he has to stand still at the back of the room until seniors are done with their works. it's a fence that doesn't rot. the only other fense that doesn't rot is stones but you have a limited supply of that and normal lumber rots very fast that you need to keep replacing and fixing gaps.

i remember saving up all the money on my 25th year of mineral town, thinking finally i wont have to replace the wood every five seconds so my chickens wont be attacked. put up the fence, save go to sleep wake up and everyone is pissed off at me not even telling me what i did! i have already saved and theres no way to remove golden lumber, so i had to use an old save state and go back 2 fuckin years! it was bullshit! salty as mineral people. the way i use my money is my own business damn it!

the only other fense that doesn't rot is stones but you have a limited supply of that and normal lumber rots very fast that you need to keep replacing and fixing gaps.
