Vauxhall Vivaro Crew Cab - A Good Builder's Van?

  • After an extensive 18-month bedding in period, Roger reviews his Vauxhall (or Opel) Vivaro 2900 1.6CDTI BiTurbo 125PS Sportive 2.9 H1 Double Cab.
I bought my Vauxhall Vivaro van just over a year ago. It was one of the first ones off the line with the Euro 6 compliant engine with Ad Blue. I had waited patiently for this engine as Vauxhall were late in changing over but I was very keen to minimise my emissions particularly as I have to drive around cities.
I was told by the dealer that the trick with Euro 6 engines is to run them hot. If you are doing a short journey you need to warm the engine up by keeping the revs high so in a quick trip down to the merchants you don't want to go higher than 4th gear. The danger is that the Ad Blue will be sprayed onto a cold exhaust and that will clog the filter and put you in limp home. If that happens the best thing is to take the van on a fast run down the motorway, easier said than done in Central London.
So that apart what do I like and what do I dislike.
I chose the long-wheelbase crew cab which has a bulkhead. It gives you about a 6-foot load space which is obviously too short for 8 x 4 sheets so one of the first things I did was to fit a Vanguard roof rack. The make roof rack mounts for all the popular vehicles so it was a very easy one-man fit.
I have never taken it off because for me it is too much hassle. The downside to that is that it cost around 2 mpg in fuel. The upside is that with the rear roller it is very easy to load 8 x 4 sheets and ladders. Is this about the roof rack or the van I hear you ask.
Back to the van. The bulkhead keeps the dust and mess out of the driver's cab and, for the most part, I am resisting the migration of tools and parts in the cab. There is also enough under-seat storage and glove boxes etc. to keep all those essentials tucked away so it looks tidy. Like many tradespeople my van is often my office and, I admit, even a place to catch forty winks if I have to hang around. I find the rear passenger seat perfect for this and I even keep a pillow in one of those under-seat compartments.
The Sorts version van has lots of refinements such as computerised compensation for load shift on the bends and even steering compensation if you try to slew it around a corner it will correct your error by some magical process that I don't quite understand.
It also has cruise control and a speed limiter and optional stop-start to save fuel and, again, lower emissions. The other thing I like is the Eco mode which helps even out your driving so you don't accelerate too fast. Like the speed limiter, this can be overridden in an emergency simply by putting your foot to the floor. Most of the time the Eco mode suits me fine and you can still achieve the high speeds only slightly less quickly.
The engine has a Bi-Turbo which, presumably is twice as good as having one turbo. Just after I bought the van an RAC man who was helping me with my old van told me he had recovered three Vivaros with failed clutches. These were all less than a year old. This troubles me and after investigating I found there was a problem with an 'O' ring (it is always the 'O' ring ) on the hydraulic clutch. That problem was fixed in my models but I have had two recalls. One was an issue with the engine mapping and didn't affect all vehicles but ( in the light of Volkswagen) they weren't taking any chances. The other issue was a hose that went to the turbo (they didn't say which one) and that was replaced. So, fingers crossed, that is all solved. I have done a number of long journeys in the last year and can really appreciate the comfort and handling of this sprightly 1600 cc engine.
Getting insurance for a six-seater van is not cheap and most of the time it is just me so you might want to think about whether you can justify all those seats. My one real gripe with this van is that if you happen to close the left-hand rear door and then slam the right hand (which is the wrong order) you end up with a nasty little dent. It has become something of a traffic jam pastime of mine to see just how many Vivaros have that dent in the edge of the rear left-hand door and it is nearly all of them. It annoys me more than you might they care to admit.

Nice review. Better than pretty much every other review as you’re using it and got use to it.
I had an 11 plate from brand new and it was great, no problems what so ever then I got to around 60k mileage and the clutch went. Then it was fine and perfect for a while long then joust everything started to go, gear the cables from the gear box fell off as well they are held in with a ball valve? Guy from the AA said it is a very common fault. Anyway it was starting to cost thousands to keep it going. Got rid. Got a 17 plate had it for a few months now and it’s annoying as, my side door doesn’t shut first time nor does passenger door. It needs to be slammed shut. The central locking doesn’t work half the time and the handles are stupidly stiff that half the time I don’t know whether or not it’s actually unlocked.
One thing that does annoy me as well is that I can’t have the time and mileage or temperature in the display on the dash? Wtf is the deal with the single unit display. Silly things like that annoy me.
The cup holders as well really annoy me too, I cannot fit a bottle of juice or my flash or drinking cup. It’s so annoying. They’ve put a cup holder at knee height in front of the centre seat. It’s pointless can’t hold any cup with liquid in it.
They have also got rid of the hook which was perfect for holding bags for rubbish etc
    The seats are comfier though.
    Rant over 😝

I have exactly the same van as you but the Fiat Talento version. I did the same thing to the back door as you and dented a door by shutting the wrong one first. After owning it a little while you do not do it any more. As for repairing the damage, I took mine to a paintless repairer, he hammered it flat again and pulled it out, without breaking the paint at all, a real artist. You can't see where it was damaged in the slightest. It was a lot cheaper than the traditional paint repair method and doesn't open the paint up to the chance of rust, like rubbing down and filling does.

I'm on my second one (2019/68) 125 Sportive LWB which now has 48000 miles and just about to change 4 tyres and front discs/ pads, nothing rattles, nothing's gone wrong and that tyre mileage is pretty good. The first one was a late 2016/66 125 Sportive LWB which ran to 104000 miles in 25 months, apart from one noisy wheel bearing that one was good too. In fact, when it was presented for MoT the recorded miles had dropped to 69000! I've also bought a 120 Sportif SWB for conversion to a day van!

Nice review Roger, some interesting points you made there. Shame about the dent, hopefully it won't be too expensive to get that repaired. Maybe Vauxhall can adjust the design to avoid that but I suppose it's just a case of getting into the habit of closing the doors in the correct way so it becomes second nature. I wonder if there are any aftermarket bumpers available to protect the edge of the door.

We have a fleet of Merc Vitos and Merc Sprinter vans where I work, and without fail the same dented rear door problem has happened to all of them. A possible way of mitigating this is a round hard rubber stick-on knob thing, that one of our mechanics has found. A simple solution, but it works and doesn't look too out of place.

In the early 00's our business had a fleet of Sprinters, then due to cost saving measures around 2010 we started moving onto the Vivaros. This lasted 6-8 years until the decision was made to move onto Transits. We STILL have some of the 2010 sprinters going (the ones that we didnt sell!); All the Vivaros fell to pieces (aesthetically and mechanically - gearboxes mainly but also baffling issues with panel side doors failing); and the Fords are going fine so far.
In summary out of an evolving fleet of 20 plus Van's the best have been the Mercs and the worst by a country mile have been the Vauxhalls. British engineering at it's worst (in our opinion).
Might be ok if you get a big discount/sponsorship, or for local traders driving around their county and down to the local merchants but certainly no good for proper commercial site use and long commutes.

We are doing a van security special soon. Ford had a nightmare with their Transit vans and it was common knowledge but they were in denial. However they have now issued a recall for a software update to make the vans a bit more secure. I hate it when companies don't acknowledge a problem and then fix it as if nothing has happened.

To be honest I recommend any van as they all have problems and will need clutchs and turbos and egr valves ect replacing/repairing. Parts wear and don't last forever. On a side note if we used biodiesel it's more environmentally friendly then normal diesel with adblue which is more tax money for the government.

The shape before that was a nightmare. There were gearbox faults that a local garage did a mod to fix. The one I had did two gear boxes and an engine. Mk 7 transit now. We still have the vivaro its going on for 300,000 miles. If you change your van every 2/3 years the over priced VW/MERCEDES are ok. Good resale value second hand. Better off looking for a good mk 7 transit. PS high security locks are cheaper fitted than a standard ford unit. PPS a top tip I got was never jump in start up and drive away. Pretty simple fix really. To stop you closing the second door first put a pull down latch on the hinge. Might have to drill a few holes but the same idea as a tool box not closing on your fingers. All I can say is that there are millions of these vans on the road all across Europe and you see a lot of them being used as airport taxis so that is a good sign. As I stated earlier I had a lot of trouble and expense with my Vito. I had it from new and it probably cost me £4,500 in repairs so you can be lucky or unlucky. Any diesel that is used for short trips or just around town needs a quick thrashing in low gear on a clear road. Always done that to mine before MOT test otherwise they would fail emissions many times.
I've found German vehicles are overrated in their reliability. Every other owner of a VW or Merc will tell you how amazing they are and yet you hear of the cost of their repairs and you're wondering whether these people have even tried any other manufacturer.
