So long Photoshop, I have found a better digital workflow for my image editing.

  • Do you need Photoshop anymore for your image editing workflow? Is it time to say goodbye to Adobe? Well . . . maybe? Photo Kitchen will always have a place for Photoshop in the pantry, but how it is used has radically changed in the last year.

Really good explanation of the pros and cons of Photoshop. I've tried to learn it with different online courses and they're very good. But unless I would be using it on a very regular basis, I just don't remember it! Old dog, new tricks perhaps?
You've made me think about a revamp to my editing and I'm thinking that I'll try to use only C1 for a few weeks. If I can become more familiar with it, then I feel that it could be the way forward for me. There's probably many features in C1 that I'm not using effectively or efficiently. Good tip about filling the hard drive, too.
I'm not a pro photographer. I just enjoy taking photos and sell the occasional print. I'm probably spending way too much time fiddling about with stuff that I don't understand in Ps. You have given me a great wake up call.
Please keep going with your channel. I found it by accident while looking for info about ETTR and find it so very informative.
I would pay for an online course on how to use C1 if you would ever go that direction.

Hi, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience 🙏🏼
Very interesting workflow. I'm big fan of C1 and I wish to have frequency separation option and mixer brush in it. But right now I'm editing my photos in C1 and then retouching in PS. But need to say I need to rethink starting from retouching and then work in C1.
Great video! Already waiting for the next one 👍🏼

I think we will still need PS or something like it in our work flow for those very tools that you mention. So happy you are enjoying the videos. Please share with anyone else that might be interested.

I watched this twice and still do not know what the new workflow is he is suggesting

So what is the final full workflow? You explained a lot about the advantages and disadvantages of each software tool

Sorry if I didn't make that clear. For me, right now. I do basic edits in CP1, then retouch in Photoshop, but then do all my color grading, contrast, and possible Black and White conversions back in CP1. This way if the subject, or the client, doesn't like the direction I took in the tonal/color changes, it can be altered much fast in CP1, and also be carried out over a wide range of images. Long story short, Photoshop has become only a retouching, compositing tool for me. Thank you for watching.

Comparing Capture One and Photoshop is really an apples to oranges comparison. Ps is a pixel editor, whereas Capture One is a raw converter, digital asset management (DAM) tool, etc. Comparing Capture One would be more accurate with Lightroom (or, for Develop, Adobe Camera Raw). I left Adobe behind after Lr 6.14; I use Capture One for my DAM and Affinity Photo as my pixel editor, but I do most of my work in C1. Lr is still much better than C1 when it comes to DAM, but that's another story.

One note on Capture One and rendered images (5:43 in video). This includes psd, jpg, tif, etc and that is that Capture one will only edit image files with an RGB colour space. If you export an image in a CMYK space (for example), C1 will let you see it but you won't be able to edit it in C1

Forgive me for clogging up your space here, but when it comes to HD space, there's one important thing to know. If you're using Capture One (or Lightroom) catalogues, you have an option to backup the catalogue on a scheduled basis. Excellent idea, but two things to note: 1) This does NOT back up your images, only the catalogue structure and related files. Two, and arguably more important, the program does NOT remove old backups. If you're backing up your catalogue daily or weekly or... you may find that you have 50GB, 100GB or more of old catalogue backups. I keep backups that are two months old or newer and regularly delete older ones. There is a way to automate this, but it's different for Windows and Mac computers. And yes, DEFINITELY, back up all of your catalogues, images...everything to an external source. There are (only) hard drives that have failed and hard drives that have yet to fail. Your backup strategy is up to you, but a few months ago the external drive on which I have 13+years of images, catalogues, etc. failed and was unrecoverable by the lab I sent it to. Fortunately 90+% of that was on another drive and I was able to rebuild what wasn't. On my internal drive I have a folder called 'Installed', and in that folder are all of the installation files for all of the software on my computer and a file that has all of the licenses. If my computer died tomorrow (and this too has happened) I can swap out the internal drive, reinstall Windows from the USB drive I created, install the backup software, restore the Installed folder from the backup, and from there I can reinstall all of my programs, etc. Within 2 days or so I'm up and running again. I can then restore all of the data from the backup as well.

Yes, it's time to part ways with Adobe in general. It's way too expensive, and there are equal or better products out there that are much less expensive, like Affinity Photo for $20 on iPAD!

There are so many alternatives now. I really don't understand why Adobe is not creating better features for what they charge.

@@PhotoKitchen425 DaVinci Resolve has all of the tools built in but Adobe keeps them as separate stand-alone tools to make people think they're getting more than the competition. I do like Adobe tools and I suppose that if the rest of your team is using Creative Cloud then it might make sense for you as well--maybe.

I still use Illustrator, Premiere, InDesign for so many projects@@SteveMartinUSA , so for me I am still drinking that Adobe flavor Kool-Aid, but I get why people leave.
