Quick tip on restoring PP for your moves: different from PLA, SV do not share/store used PP status between forgotten/relearned moves. You are a mind reader, I swear. I am currently in the process of breeding for perfect/near perfect IV starters so I can eventually use them in terra raids, and have only just started learning about EV training. I needed this video more than you could ever know. Thanks ma dude 👍
Super helpful. While I’ve never really cared for competitive but Tera raids make things a lot more difficult without a built Pokémon. Been looking at many guides for various mons to use against the tera raid events which makes things a lot easier now. It’s also somewhat got me interested in competition but don’t expect me to compete in any big tournaments any time soon lol
Returned to Pokemon after 15 years. I was so lost on all this EV and IV stuff. I just wanted to prepare for raids effectively and this is the perfect video for that. 10/10.
I already know how to EV train, but it's just entertaining to watch him do these types of videos, even if I know how to do some of the stuff he shows already. He makes very good videos that should be entertaining for every pokemon player
@@WMDistraction Because just buying your pokemon is kind of boring to some, myself included. I'm breeding 4-5 IV versions of the pokemon I care about, because it's so fast and easy compared to previous games, and it's more fun to me than just spending in-game money to get the same result.
Yeah, this is pretty good if you want to get into raids ASAP and it's not as complicated to follow. I do a bit more complicated setup to max EVs, that is to look for outbreaks, since it makes it faster AND you can do shiny hunt in the meanwhile. Also, i have 5x power items of all stats so i don't need to max for raids only (I can just swap between them during the hunt to customize each mon EVs)
I've always wondered how veteran Pokémon players decided what natures were best for a specific Pokémon. I didn't know it was as simple as looking at its stats and then picking a nature that best suited its best stat. I've always used Smogon to build competitive Pokémon but lately I've been trying to build them on my own. I quite like the freedom to build Pokémon with the knowledge that I've learned from past experiences and what I got after watching this video. Thanks a ton man, your videos are always a big help. I've been getting help from your channel since back in the Sun and Moon days! (I needed help with finding Necrozma.)
I am in postgame so I go to Area Zero for EV training. (The following examples are for Violet.) Iron Bundle gives 3 SPD EVs, Iron Hands gives 3 ATK EVs, Corviknight gives 3 DEF EVs, etc. Serebii is a good resource for you to find out what Pokemon give what EVs.
This video was insanely needed for the community. A lot of people don’t do these things to put their Pokémon to their fullest potential and it’s crucial in the raids. Also learning that you need to combat not only the tera type but also the type of the Pokémon. Stop bringing irons hands too 6 star gallade battles because it has a normal Tera type. Instant loss, very frustrating too the people who know what to do.
@@Alkapowned first of all I'm not coming at you just made a joke about what you said. Also there's a difference in watching the video and complaining on how others play.
I believe that the EV total is 510 instead of 508. It used to be that you could max out 2 stats at 255 so you had to be careful not to go over 252 and loose that extra stat.
Yes, 510 is the total maximum. 252 is the stat max, which leaves 6 EVs if you're maxing out two stats. Since the value only changes for every 4 EV, 2 out of the 6 remaining EVs are essentially wasted. Maybe that's why AJP says 508, but it's still incorrect.
@ohjesusohjesus I got careless with the power items, and it left me with rather undesirable EVs for my starters, especially when my Crocalor maxed out on Def (which would have poor growth thanks to his nature) and Speed. Good thing I disabled Auto-Save. Now to find Berries that would lower Def EVs a bit...
This video is exactly what I've been needing to understand how all these things work, I already feel like I can get my raid mons so much stronger than they are and start farming raids a lot easier! Incredible content as always Austin!
I’ve been trying to figure out the whole EV concept. And this video helped so much. Really went in depth and left out anything and everything confusing. So informal. Thank you so much
Thank you for this video! As someone who has played Pokemon since the beginning, I never understood all of this as I don't play competitively. With Max Raids and Tera Raids needing to understand IVs and EVs changed. You have a great way of explaining things so anyone can make sense of it. Love your videos!
fyi if your doing the chansey hunting. if you dont want to use up food they spawn way more frequent in the cave near camp 3 with the circles on the ground by the entrance. can usually have like 3-4 on screen and might see a shiny iron...
RE ~5:20 ish. The max EVs a Pokemon can have is actually 510, but only 508 of them can actually affect stats. I know you said you wanted to stay away from the math aspect, but this matters for getting the effort ribbon (you need all 510 to get it). To confirm this in game: If you max out 2 stats - which any one stat maxes at 252 - then use feathers in another stat, you can use up to 6 feathers in that stat. Things like Pokemon Showdown optimize this a bit by only having 508 points to assign in the teambuilder - since only 508 can actually affect stats.
Pretty much all of this was information I already knew, but I watched the whole thing anyway cos I appreciate the sheer effort that's gone into all these videos
I've been waiting for this video, I love your formatting and thoroughness and the way you explain it is super digestible, I like putting them on in the background while I work
Personalities also affect IVs and EVs. So as you showed, adamant is for physical attackers but towards the bottom of that where the personality says something like "Proud of it's power," it means that they will get a bit more points in its attack stat which can go a long way for when harder raids come out or, even though you already mentioned this is a casual guide, for those comp players who want to mid-max everything.
@@GekiTheFirst The text that refers to the 10% boost is the nature itself (adamant = 10% atk and -10% sp.atk) while the personality text towards the bottom tells you the max IV stat it has ("Proud of it's power = atk is it's highest stat). If you had atk based pokemon that's adamant nature and then you got a personality like "Mischievous" then it tells you that it's highest IV is sp.atk, something you don't want to waste time investing into that pokemon unless they are hybrids (equal stats and moves learned in atk and sp.atk). If you have and adamant pokemon you want to have a personality (like mentioned above) that will allow you to get the max stat point allocated possible for that particular stat, especially if it's moves learned overall are physical based or any similar such situation.
“Personalities” aka characteristics, don’t directly affect EVs or IVs. It’s usually an indicator of the highest IV stat that Pokémon has. If it has more than one high IV of comparable numbers (31 attack, 31 special attack, etc.), then the characteristic is randomized between them. If all your IVs are at “Best” (31) then it doesn’t really matter, same as if you hyper train them at that point.
I'd recommend waiting until the pokemon is fully evolved or reference seribi/bulbapedia to decide the attack or special attack of a pokemon. They sometimes change when fully evolved. Perfect example is the deino line.
16:25 ability patches are actually 4.5% chance according to serebii, and is accurate in my experience. you can get multiple, but I have no idea how multiples roll, but i've had it happen to me.
I like how Austin John can't ever finish watching his own videos. The watched bars under the thumbnails he shows all end about 2/3 of the way through the video 😂
this video is a MASSIVE help for me since i didn't know how EVs/IVs worked. I've tried looking it up for years now, but the math part always confused me and put me off since i suck at math lol. I first found your channel when a friend showed me your video on how to make money fast in Sword/Shield about a year and a half ago and have been watching ever since. Keep up the amazing work, you are a hero to the pokemon community!
This was the quintessential beginner video. There are many tutorials out there, but everyone speaks as if I’ve been playing every generation. After much research and confusion on my own, this really was the video that clicked for me. Especially that “how to know if a Pokémon should bias attack or sp att” piece
Austin, you should make a video about creating the best SUPPORT Pokémons for Tera Raids. Also maybe make a video about considering bringing mons that although strong offensively against a Tera boss, they are weak against their move sets. I just got off a 6 star raid where someone brought a charizard to face gyarados because of its grass Tera type. 😂
8:26 I recommend the auctions if you have decent money. I don't remember the exact starting prices, but you'll usually get +50 of a single EV berry from one auction. From my experience, it's a common auction item along with the EV Feathers which are very useful if you need specific EVs
You are an absolute legend, my friend. I've used all of your guides so far and have now gotten myself a 5iv jpn ditto, started breeding the starters to hopefully start my shiny living dex!

Thank you this was very helpful, I am new to VGC and have fallen in love with it's strategy and this video gave me just what I needed to build a team and start with a good understanding on how to train my Pokémon
I have years playing Pokémon and I never really cared about this, but this video was so easy to understand that I will start with the EV training, thanks a lot man!
Thank you for the advice. I've been playing Pokemon for years and I never understood the of evs and IVs. I just wanted to play the game but the tera threw everything I knew out the window
I never understood any of these stats and stuff ever in my life except what special vs physical is and never play competitive so thank you so much for this
I've always been a very casual player. Now that I'm thinking of starting my first nuzlocke, I'm watching a lot of content about it, and it made me realize how behind I am on these aspects of the games. I never knew what EVs and IVs are, and I never realized that there's a distinction between special and physical moves 😅 so I am feeling a bit overwhelmed. I was really happy to find this video! Thank you!
This is a thought for a slow day, but i think a video about the Porto Marinda auction house, finding out if there is a best way to get the lowest price, everything being sold, and if anything effects the spawns of what is being sold, may be helpful to players :)
Out of everything in this video and a lot of my own research on how to EV train before this video, the L button while in your party to switch the graph view is the single most important thing I have learned, thank you so much, omg
EXTREMELY helpful! For years I've wanted to really train Pokemon to its full potential but it was always hard and time-consuming for me. I'm grateful for the later gens of pokemon games only because they've made competitive training much easier compared to the earlier years. Still time-consuming, but I'll make time.
I have an Azumarill, Iron hands, Gholdengo and Flutter Mane for my raids. This morning I was thinking I'm a bit bored of it and try to build my own raid pokemon. And what do you know... Austin John puts out a video exactly for it! Thanks dude, big help! Didn't realize you could still EV train with Chansey something other than HP.
Thank you so much for making this video, this is literally all of the info I needed but couldn’t find it or other people explained it in a confusing way. This guy is the best of the best
Thank you for this!! I was loosely into competitive play back in XY (just locals at school with friends, nothing serious) so I only really knew about the importance of natures, but not fully understanding EVs/IVs and this was so helpful!! I want to get back into the competitive scene maybe and this is nice to have as a guide!
I wish i saw this video 12 days ago when I first started having mainly only played go. This clarified everything that never was truly answered succinctly
Considering myself a breeder type of Pokémon player and knowing all the stuff Austin talks about, I still watch all these videos just for the quality. Keep up the good job.
i'm definitely not somebody that can do this math, and i NEVER thought it would be this complicated, thank god for austin 🙏🏻 but seriously man, thank you. i cant defeat most 5 star raid dens and i was frustrated because i didn't know what i was doing wrong.. i will be using this immediately
Great video! I've been breeding since Alpha Sapphire and knew all of it but it was a fun watch. The only thing that's ticking me off a little bit is how much you emphasize that speed is not needed. People who are willing to take the time to do these things, might eventually try a little bit of ranked battles.. and when they do, they definitely need speed to be able to compete. So besides modest nature for special attackers and adamant for physical, also keep an eye out for jolly and timid mints and max out that speed stat of you're going to play competitively, even if it's just to see what ranked battles are about. I like competitive play so my pokemon are always optimized for that and they're still more than fine to take on the hardest raids.
Ty for the video. I hope that someday you’ll put out a video on making mixed attackers… mostly for casual play (not competitive or tera raid). It’s something I’ve been thinking about doing with Dachsbun.
Im glad you released this video. These are the details I have never really understood. I just built my fluttermane for 7 star raids and was about 70/30 on understanding.
So THAT'S what the power items are for. And I didn't even know Hyper Training existed! Thanks, dude. I can't even beat 4-5 star raids consistently, so I'm going to look into building up my team so I can actually do the black crystal dens.
Yayyy ! I was waiting for you to make a video on EV training Austin John !!! I’m completely new to it. There are currently other ones out there but I love your video format the most.

Underrated comment. Kind of went crazy when I saw over 90 berries when pressing my down button lol
Why not just make a damn sandwich? Works on all your pokemon at once.
You are a mind reader, I swear. I am currently in the process of breeding for perfect/near perfect IV starters so I can eventually use them in terra raids, and have only just started learning about EV training. I needed this video more than you could ever know. Thanks ma dude 👍
The other yellow "hexagon" that is not the EV is the base stats, so it is better to see if a pokemon is more physical or special looking at that graph
I don’t understand why people recommend this way of EV training when feathers and vitamins exist. Money is easy to come by in this game
@@WMDistraction How long does it take you to make $3M+ to buy vitamins for the whole team?
I can EV train 6 pokemon with power items in under 45 mins.
@@WMDistraction any chance you could give a short explanation on how to do it? lol was hoping he would explain it in the vid
You did a great job simplifying all this! Definitely a good way to explain IV's & Ev's, Much appreciated 🙏
Alright we get it you know how to play a intended for children.🤣🤣🤣

Just when I decided to start EV and IV training my Pokemon, Austin drops this video. You are a godsend my friend. Thank you for all your hard work.
Don’t be sorry for long videos good sir, They are filled with very good information! 👏🏼
FYI the section at 6:14 should be called Reducing EVs and at 8:46 should be called Effectively Gaining EVs
I've played online for more than enough years to know the ins and outs of this yet I'm still watching it just for the chill vibes
I've known these concepts for years but they like to change up accessibility enough that it's worth hearing how it is in this gen anyways
I was wondering why it was 6 feathers that I had to use for my last stat and not 4- this makes sense!
Pretty much all of this was information I already knew, but I watched the whole thing anyway cos I appreciate the sheer effort that's gone into all these videos
your videos are so consistently high quality and informative.
I've been waiting for this video, I love your formatting and thoroughness and the way you explain it is super digestible, I like putting them on in the background while I work
Give gamefreak credit they made a children’s game with pretty complicated mechanics and lots of math 😂
AND kids play it.
@@neorise127 Real.

pokémon ain’t a damn kids game
@@TurboClashShowdownss what he means is that some kids play it, you don’t have to be a certain age to play Pokémon tbh
Finally a good Ev Iv nature video. I was looking for something like this and u nailed it with your simple explanation.
Doesnt that text refer to the 10% boost in that stat?
Personanilty traits don’t affect anything.
With this, I will mathematically, actually, become the very best 👌 like no one ever was
16:25
ability patches are actually 4.5% chance according to serebii, and is accurate in my experience. you can get multiple, but I have no idea how multiples roll, but i've had it happen to me.
I like how Austin John can't ever finish watching his own videos. The watched bars under the thumbnails he shows all end about 2/3 of the way through the video 😂
Lmao
this video is a MASSIVE help for me since i didn't know how EVs/IVs worked.
This video was SO NECESSARY and SO HELPFUL to me! I was dealing with this last night and getting very frustrated. Thank you, Austin John! ❤
Oh that's the good exp farm spot. That info and where to get ev lowering berries alone was worth the watch.
Love the videos! Keep it up! Always excited when you release new ones. 😊
8:26 I recommend the auctions if you have decent money. I don't remember the exact starting prices, but you'll usually get +50 of a single EV berry from one auction. From my experience, it's a common auction item along with the EV Feathers which are very useful if you need specific EVs
Austin biggest flex isn't his shinies it's his 144 xl xp candies
You are an absolute legend, my friend. I've used all of your guides so far and have now gotten myself a 5iv jpn ditto, started breeding the starters to hopefully start my shiny living dex!
Just as an FYI, in the chapter section you labeled the lowering EVs section as lowering IVs
Oh, I didn't start the video yet and that was the part I was looking for. Thought he forgot it.
I love how much you explain everything. This video can work for someone who played for years or just now got their first pokemon game.

i knew everything that was covered in this video but i still watched it because that's how great his content is
I’ve played literally every generation at this point, and I still need these guides. These are by far the best and highest quality.
Am I the only one whose brain hurts trying to understand the world of competitive Pokémon and understand what iv’s ev’s etc means?
I think everyone feels like this when trying to get into it, try keep learning and it will feel natural eventually and fun

3 minutes in and this is already the most useful video I have ever watched. Thank you so much.
This guide is actually crazy helpful. I just barely started getting into doing raids and had no idea how to do EV training

thank you austin! been needing a comprehensive guide on this!
I knew all this.. but I had to catch mah boi's vid. Nice presentation.
This video was amazing! Thank you so much for making it Austin! ❤
I wish i saw this video 12 days ago when I first started having mainly only played go. This clarified everything that never was truly answered succinctly
That was a bloody brilliant video, thanks.

I know all this stuff, but Austin John tutorials are entertaining
Considering myself a breeder type of Pokémon player and knowing all the stuff Austin talks about, I still watch all these videos just for the quality. Keep up the good job.
This is by far, the best video on youtube about all this.
i'm definitely not somebody that can do this math, and i NEVER thought it would be this complicated, thank god for austin 🙏🏻 but seriously man, thank you. i cant defeat most 5 star raid dens and i was frustrated because i didn't know what i was doing wrong.. i will be using this immediately
This was the easiest to follow and most encompassing incarnation of this guide I've ever watched. Very nice.
Pokemon Trainer can't live without you Austin !
Great video Austin. Thought I'd let you know that the video timestamps talk about IVs when you're talking about EVs! Keep it up. :)
