Saguaro - Wasson Peak in Snow!

  • Winter is the best time to visit Saguaro National Park and a snowy hike up Wasson Peak on the Hugh Norris Trail provides a fabulous adventure through a desert world of frozen cactus and icy spines.
Park Junkie loves a great winter hike, and a January visit to Tucson, Arizona gave an opportunity to explore the Tucson Mountain District in one of its rarest disguises. Upon waking one morning in my camper, I gazed out my window and found that the dark hours of night had delivered a fair estimate of snow to the higher regions of the park. The entire upper realm of Wasson Peak lay covered with a fresh blanket of snow and ice.
I quickly jumped to cooking breakfast and making coffee, and soon departed the Snyder Hill BLM area to head up the Hugh Norris Trail in hopes of finding the elusive snow-covered Saguaro cactus that seemed to always escape me during my occasional visits to southern Arizona.
Heavy rain enveloped my truck as I motored northward, but upon arrival at the trailhead, thick clouds slowly parted and hazy sunshine begrudgingly emerged, as if from a long nap, with little concern for the day's duties... but that big ball of fire did emerge...
I headed into the mountains, my gate quick and my eyes keenly awakened to the fresh scenery of a trail that I had never before hiked....
If you're headed to Saguaro, be sure to check out my guide to this fabulous park:

My spouse and I just visited the east side of the Saguaro NP. We also visited the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum on the west side. This museum is one of the finest museums including live flora and fauna that I have ever visited.

Looks like a great outdoor adventure with really beautiful locations. Thank you very much for taking me with you, I really enjoyed watching it and I appreciate the work and effort you put into your production, as I create hiking videos myself and I know how hard the work can be. Great job! Best wishes, Mario

🥰 Don't mind me 😅 Just found you when you started covering the flood at Yellowstone NP so now I've got to go back in time and catch up on all the great hikes I missed 😁 The snow and ice on the cactus really gives this park an other-worldly feel 🤩

Man. What a rare treat. I could see my old house in a couple of your shots. Been feeling a bit homesick lately and this video helped. It snowed 2 times in the 10 years I lived there. Always a surreal experience.

Oh wow, so this was your back yard eh? That had to be pretty cool. Glad to take ya back for a visit. The snow certainly made it a most memorable day…

Did you get a chance to hike in Sabino Canyon?
It's beautiful there, we really enjoyed Tucson as well.

    • @theparkjunkie
      @theparkjunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No, not yet. I have hiked a bit in Saguaro, backpacked up into the Rincons on the eastern region, and that was cool too! I'll look into the Sabino Canyon next time. Thanks!

Very cool. Nice video. Any precipitation is good precipitation, I guess. Ice on the needles isn't snow. Freezing mist, probably. (Supercooled suspended water droplets that turn into ice when they touch the cacti.) Should have gotten a picture of yourself next one of the big, 40-50' ones for the scale of these giants.
When I was there, I had to take all sorts of detours because roads were washed out due to some flash floods. Admittedly, the only reason I was that far south, was because I was going to visit Tombstone, lol. Saguaro is only about an hour away, and was going that way anyway. Nothing against Tuscon, but you have to go through the middle of it to get to the other part of the park. Maybe it's because I hadn't been in a major city for over a week and had to deal with stoplights. 😁
Amazed at the number of prickly things, everywhere...

      Everything bites out there!
The park layout here is a bit strange with the regions being separated by the city. But it is what it is... Cool park, but it takes some effort to get back in there. That said, some good access can be obtained on the western side and some of the gravel roads out there. & yeah, after a storm, they can be a disaster!
