    Remember this so well - hard to believe it was 40 years ago. Thompson was superb and Hingsen was a magnificent rival who was just unlucky to be around in the same era as Daley.

    By far the Greatest British sportsman of all-time for me. Its a 'from the gut' assessment, I just feel Daley was elite in every respect, mentality etc. Like Marvon Hagler he was ahead of his time in many ways

    I was there and thoroughly enjoyed Daley Thompson's performance. I happened to be sitting in a row behind a young German lad who was there to cheer on Jurgen Hingsen and his partner Kratchmer. We had some banter back and forth that turned into a friendship. I didn't know much about what was going on in the decathlon world at the time, but I learned that Hingsen usually higher marks when Thompson wasn't around, but whenever he competed head to head against Thompson, Thompson would beat him.
    The wonderful thing about Thompson is that he didn't look like he took everything so seriously and I think it helped his performance. He was just a lot of fun to watch, an easy guy to root for.

      I remember Thompson wearing a tee shirt saying America what about the TV coverage? Essentially a jab at the way the US TV networks were so biased for US athletes over other countries' athletes

    Why has he never been Knighted. Far more worthy than the politicians that seem to receive such awards, that really haven’t done anything to deserve them, and were just doing their jobs?

    Thompson finished 4th in the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics. However when the Berlin Wall fell and East Germany dissolved records were uncovered that the two East Germans who finished first and second in that decathlon were pumped up on steroids. Thompson should have gotten a medal and those two East Germans stripped of their medals.

    • @paulwilliams8389
      @paulwilliams8389 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Shame really as Thompson was nowhere near fully fit at those Games. 8488 points was the winning score - Thompson at his peak wouldn't even have had to break sweat to reach that score.

    Why was this man knighted.

    • @jaysmith2858
      @jaysmith2858 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      If you mean why wasn't he knighted, it's because he was forthright in his views, something both the media (who basically blacklisted him) and the establishment didn't/don't like.
      Guy is a legend. My favourite sportsperson of all time. British heptathletes have done brilliantly in recent times, but I'd love to see another top quality British decathlete. We haven't had a half decent one since Dean Macey.

      Depends. If he was on a public appearance, and refused a photo, your assessment would be justified. But if you bumped into him while he was in his 'private' life, your assessment would definitely be unfair.
