Well this doesn't look like a painting at all. But then again, it is decorated with paint just like every painting ever, and the support is wood just like the Mona Lisa, the most famous painting ever. So maybe it is a painting...?
Regardless, this darling little sculpture by Ida Kohlmeyer isn't doing so well and needs a bit of attention. As a paintings conservator I mostly work with, well, paintings yet every now and then an object or sculpture arrives with a situation to which my skillset and knowledge can be applied and as such I take on the project.
In this case, some of the pieces of the sculpture have broken off and need to be re-attached. Sounds simple, right... of course not.

I would love a mini-series about how to protect current art hanging or on display in our own homes. For example, last year my hubby bought me an oil painting as the artist passed away suddenly. So I’d love to know how to keep it looking good for as long as possible. So one for each type of paint, type of art, or whatever you would like art owners who care to know.

As an artist, cleaning the grime every month with a soft towel and should do. Over time you could get an artist to check on the condition of the varnish..and apply when necessary.

    • @LexCollins2000
      @LexCollins2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

If you look on the american institute for art conservation website, there's actually a mini series about how to conserve your own artifacts, such as pictures, paintings, etc. I just learned about this in my art conservation class (I'm an art conservation major), they're trying to make this readily available to everyone so we can all take care of our own treasures! Lmk if you cant find it and Ill link it

@@shreyasshankar4109 It depends on the varnish, I would have a conservator look it over because an oil varnish can already be damaging to a painting, let alone if you continue to reapply it, such as yellowing or damaging the paint under the varnish

I think he's really nice even pretending they have an option. If it were my line of work, I'd be insisting that cleaning is mandatory for any piece that will be conserved. Other than the issues that Julian's mentioned a zillion times re trying to conserve over something that's grubby, what if it's carrying mould spores or pests or something smelly that might affect the other works stored on the premises? I mean, obviously the cleaning should be proportionate to the dirtiness of the piece, and I can't imagine it costs too many extra $$$ to go over something with a mild detergent and some q-tips, ahem, cotton swabs.

Since you said this was a young piece, I looked up Kohlmeyer and saw that she died in 1997, but it made me wonder if you've ever worked on a painting by a living artist and had the chance to talk to them about it. I can imagine there might be a conflict of interest there, but it could also be really beneficial to understanding the painting's process and structure if it was made with unusual materials. Or perhaps worked on a piece that was previously conserved by the artist themself? Is that a thing that happens?
(Watching your videos has made me want to go back and work on some of my old paintings from high school, like varnish them and maybe give them a more stable backing, lol)

@cowtriks (i know you were just making a light-hearted joke, but i also just wanted to share my insight below so hope you don't mind)
i also find it kinda funny and ironic that he would drill into the sculpture because it's just as irreversible as the epoxy, but compared to the epoxy, i think at least the drilling had a more useful purpose which was to add dowels, making the sculpture more structurally secure. the epoxy isn't even strong enough to hold the pieces, and it just leaves a mess to clean up.

    • @Mmartini2727

The owners had that piece of junk in the back of their car for years. I doubt they cared if he drilled into it. Furthermore, the sculptor should have done that to begin with. This piece was probably created in your grandma’s arts and crafts class.

Yeah, it looks like a rich client's 8-year-old granddaughter's art project, but think of it as economic artistry. What was the cost in raw materials for that item? Now look at the wealth Ida Kohlmeyer generated with it. Somebody paid real cash money for that thing, probably through an agent and gallery that both got money for displaying the thing and managing the transaction. The buyer then paid somebody else to make a pedestal to put it on, then spent money on epoxy to attempt a home repair, then paid Julian to do an expert repair, and Julian uploaded the video of fixing it to his sponsored and monetized TH-cam channel. Can you generate that kind of wealth from that value in raw materials? I know I can't.

Aren't we all? I'm just starting week 5 of total lockdown due to me being high risk - anyone else with me? Any other confinees doing the long confine? Just want to say we're doing GOOD! And this sculpture was WEIRD. Sorry, but it was - and he was amazing fixing it.

That's so cool seeing an abstract sculpture being conserved! I love the paintings but this was a nice and welcome change.

You are a genius! I refurbish vintage furniture and it never occurred to me to use lasers to align dowels in unconventional positions. Excellent work, glad to see someone that is so meticulous.

Part of the reason I watch your videos is because I really like how you explain things, the tone of your voice, and how proper your speech is, so when you said “but not the pew pew kind” I laughed SO hard.

At first I thought this was a April Fools joke. Enjoyed the video and art is subjective

If I hadn’t already been in love with your channel, seeing you use QoR watercolors (one of my favorite WC brands so worth the cost) made me love it just a little more.

I've wanted to see you restore something relatively contemporary, and see you work on a sculpture, so this video is fortuitous. Thank you!

That's so interesting, I really loved seeing you work in a different dimension, but seeing how similar the process is, and how you adapt your tools for the different mediums used... It's absolutely fascinating, thank you!!

This was a great video to watch. My father was a carpenter and a master, in my opinion, at rebuilding damaged wood furniture and I loved to watch him work. Thank you for sharing this!!!
