    Mr. Jiroch - I was on a very early passage on the Badger in summer of 1953 on my way as an 18 year old going to a puppetry festival at the University of Minnesota. I still recall the hum of the engines and the sense of power pushing us through the waters. Seeing these photos has me wondering if I was paying attention, since the SIZE of this ferry is much bigger than I recall. All in all it was a pleasant voyage which, as I understand, isn't always guaranteed when sailing on any of the Great Lakes. Thanks for these great photos and details. Much appreciated... Regards, Fred Thompson....

    My wife and I sailed on the Badger in 1975. We both were very sea sick for pretty much the whole trip. But as the years go by it didn’t seem that bad! We are loving the videos and history! Great stuff!

    I hooked a salmon just by the lighthouse in Ludington. The Badger was coming out and my dad had to move the boat. The people from the Badger had a great view of a 17 year old kid fighting a 20 pound fish. 15 minutes later I landed a great King salmon. What a day.

    Michael, this is simply outstanding! I think you managed to capture every nook and cranny aboard the magnificent Badger. Thank you for your wonderful footage of this special Lady.

      Thank you, Susan. I couldn't get into the bowels of the ship. I couldn't get to the front bow in the car section....or engine room. I would have loved that.

    Awesome video! I usually take some myself whenever I am aboard but nothing as good as this! Great job! Makes me feel like I am back aboard!

    The wife and I took this trip without a car... over and back... about year 2106. Ate Biscuits and Gravy... very good meal. We called it our thousand dollar vacation.

    This is AWESOME footage!! When I get too homesick for my Big Ship, I will watch this video. I wish with all my heart the Spartan could be converted to diesel and sail out of Milwaukee again. At least I know we can drive up to Manitowoc and sail over to Ludington on the Badger. I love this ship.

      Unfortunately, Spartan has been used for parts for the Badger, so whether she can be revived, is in question.

    #42 Many, many years ago I sailed and wheeled the SS Badger 43 when operated by the C&O-B&O Railroads. I enjoyed being part of the Ole Girl's history. The Food was the Best! Great Cooking! I'm 70 now, and she's 65. I expect her to be around till 100! Anchors Away!

    The light house on the south pier in Manitowac was swept into the lake in a storm 2weeks ago, only the platform remains. Awesome trip to take, done it many times

      After watching this video, I wish some student of UW would make a Midwest version of the "Love Boat" on this ship. It looks virtually unchanged from the date of its construction.

    I got back from Ludington last week but after seeing this video I want to go back, this time via the Badger. We must have driven down to the dock five or six times just to see the Badger and the Spartan. I loved the onboard shots. The scene of the Badger leaving Ludington (around 21:42) was absolutely perfect and I wish there was a way to make a still photo of that scene,

    Very nice video. I am originally from Sheboygan but have been living in Springfield Missouri since 2001.. I have never been on the Badger and thought about going across on it next time I visit Sheboygan.. While in Michigan it would be fun to visit the sister city of Cheboygan Michigan.

    Now Badger is big different than 30 years ago. I like old company Chessie System. They used to carry freight cars and have less than 500 passengers. So they were not crowds. Now they carry 600 passengers and they are crowds. I like City of Midland better. I miss Chessie Mini Cruise trip with meal for about $13.00 and have trip between Milwaukee and Ludington. I miss dining room service by waiters. My old friend were captain and maid there.

    Very nicely done....
    Now if only someone could come up with the money to put the Spartan back into service (perhaps Muskegon to Milwaukee)
    BTW those where passenger staterooms (rent one they are worth every penny) Crew quarters are in a location you can't get to.

    • @craigsmith7598
      @craigsmith7598 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed sad The Spartan may never see service again... But they don't have Skinner Unaflow parts at Autozone either....

    • @pmsteamrailroading
      @pmsteamrailroading 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. She would need to be converted to Diesel.
      But that would be better then what happened to the City Of Midland.

    • @MichaelJirochVisualArtist
      @MichaelJirochVisualArtist  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      pmsteamrailroading I did get into the crew quarters...I had a special pass to see everything. Except the engine room. Badger PR rep was on board that day.

      No, regulations no longer permit it. Coal ash is captured, and recycled.

    You would think the EPA could travel to Mexico , China or Korea and stick up for us instead of trying to shut down our history. I bet they hate our remaining steam trains.

    • @MichaelJirochVisualArtist
      @MichaelJirochVisualArtist  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clayton Evans ...well for goodness sake, you know the EPA was set up to squeeze more revenue into the greedbag govt kaufers, right? It was set up that way. A sweet title (EPA) that tugs on people’s conscience and guilt buttons, but evil and sinister in its depths of bureaucracy. There is even under-cover video of a group leader showing how to act and behave like the mafia in getting “protection money” uh-hem out of US businesses to a group of trainees. Evil, evil bureaucrats.
