Many people erroneously believe rock music is just aggressive chaos, not realizing that the lyrics quite often address social problems. It reaches a select part of society who routinely learn of those problems through music, maybe even better than what they would get in a classroom.

The song is based on the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" (www.imdb.com/title/tt0067277/)
"Joe, a young American soldier, is hit by a mortar shell on the last day of World War I. He lies in a hospital bed in a fate worse than death - a quadruple amputee who has lost his arms, legs, eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He remains conscious and able to think, thereby reliving his life through strange dreams and memories, unable to distinguish whether he is awake or dreaming. He remains frustrated by his situation, until one day when Joe discovers a unique way to communicate with his caregivers."

@@Sicnesses23 yeah people make that slight mistake all the time. That the song is an anti-war song. War is more of the setting of the song, not the meaning of it. Now Johnny Got His Gun may have been an anti-war novel and film, but as far as the song goes, the angle James took with those lyrics wasn’t directed towards the war, but instead directed at his condition. Also, I wouldn’t say the song is about death either though. When you strip the song down to the bare bone, the song is about being trapped. And James Hetfield himself is the one who said that.

She legit looks like she about to cry I madly respect that because this is a true story and it just shows how it's possible to have an experience worst than death, The movie is called Johnny got his gun
Basically the stories about a man who went to war and a bomb shell landed next to him in which he lost his arms legs hearing speech pretty much everything but touch and natural senses, they basically kept him alive for years and his death wasnt really let out but the nurse who cared for him for years noticed he kept hitting his head up and down and it was Morse code for help me SOS and kill me over and over , he also tried to hold his breath to death but he was basically forced to live inside himself, there's alot more in the movie but that's basically the story of the song

You are the first one who really gets the hopeless, frantic nature of this song that I've seen. You have an empathetic soul, and you saw right through the long hair and badass guitars, and understood the frantic struggle against the darkness. This poor boy was maimed, and destroyed by this war, and it cost him everything. I love this reaction.

Dalton Trumbo wrote the book Jonny got his gun which was made into the movie shown. Metallica realized that the themes of the song and book parallel. This was Metallica's first video (4th full studio album). I remember a group of us in high school recording the premiere. We sat there shocked and then after a minute or two rewound it(ok that dates it to the late 80s) to watch a half dozen times that night.
Highly recommend Rooster from Alice in Chains if you haven't reviewed. Some similar themes of cost of war on soldiers.

Wow I’m very impressed at how much of the meaning of the song you were able to pick up. When people react to this song for the first time, the reactions are generally positive, but they usually don’t catch what the song’s meaning is and end up learning what it’s meaning is by what people post in the comments. You caught on to waaaaay more of song’s meaning on your first listen than most other reactors do. To give a ballpark estimate, I’d say most reactors who react to this song come out understanding like between 10%-30% of the song’s meaning. I’d say you understood like a solid 80% of it’s meaning. So yes his face was destroyed, which also destroyed his senses. You were right about that. His arms and legs were blown off as well so he’s just a torso and a head. So he’s immobile and unable to communicate.
So to fill in the blanks with the few things you didn’t catch; the doctors think he is brain dead and in a vegetative state, they don’t realize he’s fully conscious and self aware. So since they think he’s brain dead, and he doesn’t have anyway to communicate with them, there’s nothing he can do but think. Being alone with just his own thoughts makes him start to lose sanity and it becomes hard for him to distinguish whether whatever is going through his head at any given moment is him being asleep and dreaming or him being a wake and thinking about/remembering things from his life. Theres one aspect of the story that people who haven’t watched the movie don’t know because the song and music video don’t touch on it, but the doctors are intentionally keeping him alive and hooked up to machines so they can run tests on him and stuff of that nature. Since they think he’s brain dead and incapable of thought and feeling, he wouldn’t be aware they were even doing anything to him. So that’s the whole reason he’s in the situation he’s in. He’s being forced to be alive.

Metal has a bad rep with people in regards of satan and just screaming. Now you understand that its not just about BS. To be honest, didnt have to say a word. Your tears said enough. I was 8 years old when this album came out and it scared me and filled me with dread and sadness for a few hours afterwards. I almost didnt want to see it again. Thank you for giving Metal a chance. Metal can move you in ways other forms of music cannot. One is about absolute darkness, dispair and utter doom Your response was the best Ive seen.

I see how you think it was beautiful. It was a very empathetic song that puts you into someone else's position that you wouldn't otherwise imagine and challenges your perceptions about war as well as assisted suicide and the right to die. It could make you change your mind, even, if you are the kind of person who thinks of war as noble and glamorous and ending life support as something immoral.
