  • Cinematographer Anil Mehta tells us about unpredictable forces that can affect a film shoot, and how the crew must work around them. In this episode of Inside A Scene, he tells us about shooting the song Ghanan Ghanan from Lagaan which is centred around the villagers waiting for the rains. Mehta elaborates on why he had only 20 minutes to shoot an entire sequence, the challenges of creating a cloud cover, and how the choreography had to be changed.

    This. This is the kind of video real cinemaphiles want to watch. Movies aren't just the actors on a promotion tour. They're a collaborative effort, a cocktail of multiple talents and attitudes.

    These 6 minutes were a master class on effective problem solving. I love that he detailed the failures along the way and gave credit to all the cast and crew who collaborated. FC, thanks for the great discussion.

    Actually the most interesting part of "Ghanan Ghanan" song picturization is the long shots and the perfect choreography.

    This series from Film Companion is really great....and of course it would be Aamir who came up with the seed of the idea to solve the problem. He always says "film making is team work" and this illustrates that very well.

    I was very young when I watched (and absolutely loved) this film. Only about 6 or 7, I think. At the time, I didn't really understand why I loved it so much more than other films- I guess it was instinctual. As I've watched it multiple times over the years, however, I've come to appreciate it much more in greater nuance. Only in very recent times have I come across so many professionals explaining how the various brilliant techniques within film-making made it what it was. The other day I watched one of AIB's videos where people from the First Draft talked about how they studied the finesse of this film. It's so interesting to finally understand the technicality behind the brilliance of the final product.

    Today lyricist have gone, singers hv gone, music directors hv gone.. God knows where but we dont hv any of those talent left now... What we hv now salman khan as lyricist, badshah as music director, remo dsuja as film director,....
    One thing i observed is that why we used hv brilliant lyricist n music talent n screen n dialogues writers in 40s, 50s-90s... Bcoz that time we hv those generations which was mad for sufi music, Urdu, Faarsi, poetry, kavaali... Problem with today's generation is they dont even know their own language hindi or whatever in proper way... And they hardly Urdu.. Urdu is very important language in terms of lyrics writing n dialogues writing... Now a days ppl dont hv that grip on their urdu... Second thing nobday of this generation has seen any freedom struggle.. The actual genuine whre ppl r dying, bleeding, starving... Its all fake fake fake world now..

      Its not like these new age filmmakers are being loved its just that they are being shoved down the throat of the audience via marketing.....
      It can clearly seen last year when a quality film( which also had beautiful music and songs) "Baahubali 2" wrecked a storm across Box Office and everyone else just withered away in that storm

      Watch regional cinema. They are doing some really extraordinary work. Having said that, it's not as if people in the Hindi Film Industry are not doing great work. It's just that the good stuff is overshadowed by the shitty ones and are shoved down our throat by the sheer amount of over marketing and commercial appeal. If you look for the good stuff, you'll find it.

    Geniune question, couldn't this problem be solved with some kind of filters? Similar to ND filters? Or am I missing something here..

    It was common sense yaar... The moment he said they didn't want to shoot in direct sunlight, I immediately said then shoot it in the evening... and it's obvious the cloth idea wouldnt have worked as the centre dips down and also the wind... Y didn't they think of these things while brainstorming before making the cloth? 🤔 Wierd...

    • @DevarsiGhosh91

      You really think these professionals with 20 years of work behind them didn't know this?

    • @newsilverwhitewinter
      @newsilverwhitewinter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Vinayak Vadlamani: Hi, no it wouldn't. A ND filter would drown out all the colours, do note that the costumes in this film are very vibrant, especially that of the women. That would require extensive CC later. Plus a ND filter also tends to create shallower DoFs, but in a song with multiple characters who need to be placed at varying depths of field, focussing on many of them together would become a problem,
