How to Clean up Strawberry Beds

- One garden job that I do every January is cleaning up my overgrown strawberry patch. In summer the plants spread and send out runners in every direction. If you don't keep on top of them, the strawberry bed can turn into a tangled mess. Strawberry bed maintenance is key to keeping it healthy and flushed with fresh berries.
In summer, I let my plants root in the bed, but tend to cut runners off around the edges. The masses of leaves can protect the bed during the coldest parts of the winter. Come late-winter, I give my overgrown strawberry patch a good clean. It's a lot easier to do than you'd think.
If you're in a colder region, wait until early spring to do this job. Strawberry plants will have a better chance of survival if they're protected with a thatch of leaves and spent mulch.
Also on the agenda: clearing two rows of strawberry plants in order to plant new bare-root plants. These need to be planted in the winter, when they're dormant. Replacing plants every three years with new plants keeps berry production high. You can do this with bare-root plants, purchased potted plants, or from new plants created from runners.

Can you please tell me how to thin out strawberry plants while they are being fruit in May?
Thank you.
I'd wait until after the berry harvest.
Beginner here! How do I know if it’s a weed or strawberry plant? There was already a garden here when I moved in and I’m trying to figure it out. Help!
Hello! Have a look at various stages of strawberry plants on Google - that should help. After winter, many established strawberry plants look like this: strawberryplants.org/wp-content/uploads/Are-Dried-Up-Strawberry-Plants-Dead-1.jpg
Hi. How do you ammend the strawberry soil?
Just an inch of garden compost spread over the surface if the soil each year. Not dug in.
@@Lovelygreens Thank you
Was looking for exactly this! Will be sure to give mine a tidy up this January 👍👍
You can tidy up at the end of summer, too 👍
Prep work can be done at this time too. Clean seed pots, clean growing pots. Buy insect repelling fabrics, look for sales on materials, sharpen tools. Etc. I'm sure there are tons of things that can & should be done that I'm just not thinking of.
Hi I all ways cover my strawberries with fleece so if I on cover them in middle the of march and trid then up then as I live Somerset and it can get very wet and cold in the winder.
Thanks
I have a raised bed as well with strawberries. But the soil level is lower now. My question is how do you fill in a raised bed with existing strawberries without covering the crowns? Thanks.
shes cute
I had to create a separate bed for my white strawberries, they are almost invasive to other strawberries. Oddly though I don't get much fruit from them and they are usually small, the size of large raspberries, not strawberry size. I need to figure out what I'm doing wrong with those.
My patch is completely brown. Did I kill it completely?
👍 But what about Mulch , I use Blk.cedar mulch in my gardens. What is better Straw or Blk.mulch. Thank you
Very helpful video
I planted 10 plants last late winter and they literally spread out to 8 feet over the last year, with thicker patches nearer the main plants. Your video is very relaxing to watch. Thanks for the tips.
Another option to composting the spare runners is giving them away to neighbours and friends. I also put spare plants out in front of my house with a 'free plants' sign. Pine berries are still about £15 for just three, so it would be wonderful to share with others who may not be able to buy them in. Community sharing is never a bad thing.
I was thinking that too . I try to just appreciate a video and try to not give opinions . But this video was so cringe watching plants composted rather than given away. A new gardener would love something like that .
Do you water the strawberries over winter, I live in England
I’m in the US, zone 7, so when should this kind of task be completed? Since my bed is totally overgrown and the plants are hitting year three, do I compost everything and start over again? Also, when is the best time to plant new plants? My bed is totally overgrown and I want to expand it next year, so I want to plan ahead. Thanks!
Did you ever figure this out? I'm in 7a, going on year 3 and my beds are completely full. I'm trying to research what to do.
Hello, can I replant strawberries when they have flowers? Move them to a different bed.
Great video, thank you. I’m curious about your accent...you have a very subtle British accent, and sound more American than British. Is this your usual accent, or are you trying to sound more American for your TH-cam channel?
You made only mess🤣😂🤣.
For new plants or bare root planted in January or February, do you clip all flowers and runners in year 1 or do go ahead and let them fruit? Does it really make enough difference to give up the first crop? Thank you.
Helpful video .... If you need somewhere to garden , you are welcome to join me :)
Thank you!
Hi. What season is January in?
Thanks. I was looking at my berries today thinking about what a crowded mess it was. Now I know what to do with it!💗
Hey friend! I'm about to do the same to my strawberry patch today. They are about 5 years old and I noticed in the spring they were very susceptible to diseases and bugs
Thank you for this
Ho do you keep the strawberries away from aphids, ants, slugs? I know ants come after aphids but they still do somedamage and slugs eat the fruits pfff !! Thanks for your video!
@Lovely Greens Thank you for the advice its my next job :) also subscribed for more videos
Very informative and hands on! I just put in new plants in my square foot box!
Thank you very much for this lovely, relaxing video.
I'm currently in lockdown in London so I thought I'd attend to my strawberries to calm me down and provide some peace in life right now.
They way you explained your points was really elegantly done, and so nicely shot.
Subscribed! :)
@@deniseflick6846 Isolating in Alberta here! Be well and be safe.
Nice garden. We still have snow in Chicago
Yawzers. She’s lovely indeed.
I so need to place a roof on the green house asap... wish to network with heritage strains.
I just found your videos and subscribed. Thank you and your videos are great! Two questions: how do you know what three year old strawberry plants look like? And how are you keeping the strawberries alive in the dead of summer? We get 110 degrees here for a few months straight.
Great work! This is a common question so it's great for us all that you answered it so clearly. Thanks!
Donna Balzer Thanks Donna - an overgrown strawberry patch can be an intimidating thing for sure. Hopefully the video can help others who aren’t quite sure what to do with theirs.
Is it too cold for winter crops there? During winter we are growing lots of pak choy, broccoli, rocket, lettuce and so on. They grow slowly but at least there are no cabbage butterflies around.
I am trying a pink flowered strawberry this year, the fruit is small but they are sweet.
I'm going to be growing a type like that too this year -- it's called 'Just Add Cream'. I'm excited to see what they look (and taste) like. Is that the type you have too?
Winter crops do grow here as well and I have Kale and Purple sprouting broccoli in the allotment. At home in the greenhouse I have mixed lettuces and greens. They grow well, although slow, with a little protection from the wind and cold.
HELLO TANYA How are you today fine is this your working in your garden very nice 👍
Good night 🌹❤️

Hello, Just found your lovely channel I've subbed you up, I have one too its based on my allotment, would be great if you could check it out and sub me up if you haven't done so already. Take Care Claire :-)
You are just the best!!!I'm changing my ways because of you
What changes are you making this year Bill? What are your gardening plans? :)
I'm going to use your tips for building pallet planters for strawberries. How early in the year should they be planted if I buy little plants?
It depends on your climate really. If you're planting it up with potted strawberry plants then early spring should do! They don't like sub-zero temperatures so avoid planting them until after it's warmed up a bit.
I dug out all mine end of last season and replanted about 30. Try Mara des Bois, they fruit for months!!
Thanks for the recommendation :) I've heard good things about Mara des Bois and am definitely considering them. I like the idea of strawberries all summer long!
Why you do dig all yours and then replanted 30? I am curious to know! I keep all mine in the same place and cut what is too much! Thanks
You are lovely How do you know when pineberries are ripe
When the seeds turn red. The flesh begins as a creamy white and over time will blush to a very pale pink -- I like them best at that point.
Hi Tanya how many strawberries did you pick from the bed last year it would be interesting to know buy the way your wheelbarrow looks just like mine worked nice video your videos are always very calming kind regards David
You know I really should weigh my harvests this year! LOADS came out of this bed last year and the pineberries have a longer season than the red so I was picking them well into the summer. Thanks for dropping in David and am happy you enjoyed the video :)
So if I planted starts from a friend last year (and I have no idea the age of those starts). Last year would be year 1 and 2018 would be year 2 Does that mean in Spring of 2019 I need to replace them?
Spring of 2020 Dolly. They should be in the ground for three solid years and three harvests :)
