I know this area from visiting it in 1993. I am Australian and my husband and I spent 2 years in Tokyo. We hired a car for the weekend to make the trip to just here, but it took us so much longer getting there than we thought, so that when we arrived at 8pm we booked a second night at the Matsushima Century Hotel which you walked past. One of my favourite photos was taken after dinner on the 3rd small red bridge, just before the old temple on the small island, wearing a pair of pointy red shoes. I was only 28 years old….it would have been a very Instagramable photo 😉

I am having a bottle of amber ale and wondering whether it would be something you and Satoshi would enjoy - it's called Doom Bar. I needed this after the day we've had! Moving out of a house after nearly thirty-nine years is no joke 😭
Sorry I wasn't more active during the premiere. I was called away from my computer a number of times so I'm going to watch again to catch up on the things I missed. Thanks, as always, for sharing your experiences with us 😁

My husband and I always enjoy your videos! So relaxed and enjoyable… also informative. Thank you for being so open and honest in what you’re doing. I think you are very brave. Hi, I watched this on my Smart TV the other day. Hiking or Tramping boots may be better to wear as the high bit around your angles supports them much better than the sneakers you were worried about. I assume you can buy these in Japan? Great video btw…thanks Laurie NZ

I know what you mean about anxiety, especially about falling on the ice. I slipped on ice a few years ago and broke my ankle. It changed my life, making it difficult to walk and hike and go places. That's why I love your videos. I can see Japan (and Hawai'i) with you.

Japan is so modern that's why I hope the people would be more accepting of people eating especially if one buying is a tourist with no home address to take the food they bought. One buys food if hungry and to still search for a place to eat is cumbersome. As long as one carries his/her own littler, it shouldn't be a problem. Anywhere in the world, one can buy streetfood and eat right there. I remember the delicious waffles in Brussels, Belgium & I bought a veggie variety, with all buyers we were eating right there beside the street kiosk. Likewise in Prague, Czech Republic, it was lunchtime already but didn't have time to eat in a restaurant on the way going up to Prague Castle, and good thing there was a street kiosk selling hotdogs in bun, since I don't speak Czech I just pointed 1 hotdog sandwich, good thing it wasn't the spicy type, & with other tourists, we sat on the curb & ate our food just fronting the kiosk ... finally sat & rest temporarily the aching legs from walking .... and walking ....

Nice walk in nature but I felt your anxiety in this one. Wasn’t too bad as there were other people around. Snow is common for me but for others it is beautiful and appreciated. Being an American I was surprised at how you get charged to access everything even a walk bridge but it is probably why your country remains so gorgeous.

Lesson- snow melts faster on pavement with sun and traffic. Raw ground and shade, a bit more elevation and less traffic, it will melt and ice over for a week. Lol. Get retractable walking poles! Might help with some walks.

Wow , the title says it all Shinichi absolutely stunning. And so was the food ,never tried curry oysters fried before but it looks so good. Beef tongue and zunda mochi and melon buns even better. Thanks for the temples and the walk , I felt your emotions it's not nice to slip on ice especially as you get older. I'm so glad you shared this experience walking on ice we tend to forget how difficult it can be in snow and ice when you live in places that don't get snow like where I live. I thought you did a superb job making this wonderful video, it's so breath taking and the oysters are quite cheap my husband would move there tomorrow 😀. Take care much 💛💛💛

So much nostalgia! We went to Matsushima during our honeymoon in 2019 and stayed in a beautiful resort right on the coastline, but it was the day before Typhoon Hagibis hit! We had to rush down to Tokyo so we wouldn't be stranded up north, so we didn't get to do much in the town or in Sendai. I hope we can go back and explore more soon.
I also have an anxiety disorder with panic attacks and it's so awful when they happen somewhere where you can't do what you need to do to manage them. So much empathy, Shinichi-san

Thanks for taking us on your exploration with you, I live in a city and don't often get to (or allow myself) to go into nature. This video let me experience a little tranquility in the beautiful scenery you shot
Also, don't worry about sounding like a scaredy-cat about falling, I am now in my 40's and it seems any injury I receive is far more substantial than it would be if I was even just 10 years younger.
Last time I went on a hike, I used a walking stick and I found it quite helpful l (also in bad shoes).
Take care Shinichi, it is fun to explore with you.

  • @offthesidelines

Hi Shinichi! "Pensée" is the French word for "thought"! Your pronunciation of the "pen" part is a bit off; "en" is pronounced similarly to "an" in the Japanese way, kind of like in "pan" (bread) with a silent n.
Extra/fun fact: pensée is also what we call a pansy flower in French. 🙂

$2200 Yen for 40 minutes of oyster eating? That’s about $19 USD. This amount of money would get you six fresh oysters at a restaurant where I live!! Very very good deal for $2200 Yen💚

You getting lost reminds me of the time when my mother and I went to botanical garden in Wellington(it's a pretty big place). On our way back my mum had this great idea of taking a different path, because she wanted to pick some plants to take back home. We ended up walking for hours! It got really dark and on top of that it had to rain as well. It was already 10 pm when we finally found our way back.
Walking in the rain at night time with no umbrella was horrible, so cold!
That experience taught me to never take an unfamiliar path, or never trust my mum's sense of direction ever again.

They are famous for a kabocha cake - one of the most delicious things I've ever had in my life. You can also go for tea in the traditional Kanrantei tea house overlooking the sea, they often serve the Matsuda cakes with the tea.

Shinichi, when I feel afraid, I lean on God and He looks after me. I trust Him because I have known Him all my life. He would love to help you too, but He won’t intervene unless you ask Him. He doesn’t come in uninvited. 🙏❤️. Every person on Earth has a Guardian Angel to watch over them for their whole life. You can ask him to protect you and to keep you safe as you walk, snow, ice or any other surface. I have many stories about Guardian Angels protecting people.

You can eat a few oysters, but they are very high in cholesterol, which is not good for us.
