    TRUTH! When I was first starting my UX journey, I had troubles finding a job or internship to give myself some projects to talk about. Then I thought, WTF why am I WAITING for people to give me something to do when there are literally MILLIONS of problems out there to talk about? So I just crafted my own studies.
    I get similar questions from folks so I tell them the same thing - GET OUT THERE AND DO IT YOURSELF!! hahah
    Thanks, Sarah!

    Thank you very much for this video. I really wanted to become a UI/UX designer and I'm kind of having a hard time at the moment. But what you said about taking a notebook and jot down problems we met in everyday life and then try to propose solutions to them reminds me of the starting point of my UI/UX dream where I realised that being a person who is sensitive to problems, incompleteness and imperfectness does not mean that this person is picky and somehow abnormal but on the contrary means this person has a unique perspective of seeing things and this is a gift. Even for me days have been tough recently, I need to remind myself of not giving up habits that are beneficial and necessary for a UI/UX designer.

    Hello Sarah,
    Thank you very much for doing this video. I am always a big fan and follower of your content.
    This is the same guy who asked you this question. I remember you answering this question in one of your webinar attended and you gave me advice to start "spotting problems" in day to day activities and "solve problems" at the end of the week.
    I have started the same process and yes my thinking and way of looking towards things have changed a lot. Of course in a good way!

    • @SarahDoody
      @SarahDoody  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for checking it out :) Yes, as UX designers we must be problem SPOTTERS and problem SOLVERS :) That's the key to developing a critical and curious mind, which are important qualities of a UX designer!

  • @MrUtoobee

    I love how you emphasized on how UX is about spotting problems and just not solving problems. It would be great if you can consider a problem and then suggest the approach or thought process listed down. That would serve really well for a beginner.

    I like your videos. I've been involved with graphic design for many years primarily for tshirt graphics. I've also done some multi page layouts for cd's which I enjoyed very much. I'm now excited to gain knowledge of the uiux industry as I feel it's a good fit for my skill set. My issue is I don't have the real world work experience so I'm trusting my work will speak for itself.

      Hi Richard. Yes, design is design. Though the thing you're designing may change, the process is still the same. Sounds like you just need to level-up your skills when it comes to user experience and interaction design. Good luck and thanks for checking out my UX videos :)

    I chose my major (CIS), but I enjoy the more creative side of it. I was also a bit discouraged since I'm one of the few women in my major so I was really down and I wanted to know if this was the right major. Hi Sarah, thank you for your videos! I've just joined your channel and I'm loving every content you've published so long. If I can give you a little feedback I'd go a bit more straight to the point of the video because is when the attention (grabbed by the title) is at its top; if you put too much time between the start of the video and the actual content promised by the title the attention goes drastically down and feels a bit like a bite to deliver your book, that is great, but is not the reason why usually users click on the video. First deliver what pronised in the title and than the user will reward you listening activelly to your advertise ;)
    I'm sorry, I'm not skilled like you but this makes sense for me and, in the end, is what I've felt whatching your video.
    Straight to the content, than sell (you're great, so I'll be still there at the end ;) )
    Hope you may answer me. Thank you. Bye ;D

    When you were talking about creating a sample project out of an issue you spot, such as the TSA and airport issue..How do you go about interviewing/questioning people for an unofficial project without being intrusive? I see problems like this every day, but I'm not sure how I would be able to do the research without it being a real project.
    I know you mentioned using twitter to ask you questions, but I do not use twitter and I think it's easier for people to be able to comment on the specific video they have questions about here on youtube :)

    • @SarahDoody
      @SarahDoody  7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Good point -- I think it would be tricky to actually go and try and research one of those big problems such as the TSA or the userflow of an emergency room! In that case, I would recommend that you perhaps show how you would go about doing that research -- come up with the research plan. Observation sessions? One on one interviews with TSA agents? Travelers? Others? As well, you could also storyboard out the existing user-flow of the TSA from your perspective and offer process improvements. If this is for a portfolio, it's all about showing your thought process :) Hope that helps Kayla!

    After this video, I'm sure now that I prefer gonna be just a UI designer and make the end look beautiful. Mainly in Brazil, companies don't care to people's problems unless those problems affect their wallets. Brazil definitely does not have space for UX. I wish I could have a chance to get a damn h1b sponsorship and move away from this freaking country, but for now, being behind a Mac with Photoshop is great.

      Hi João -- you should follow these publications medium.com/@fabriciot and brasil.uxdesign.cc/ because from what they are doing, I am under the impression that there is UX related activity happening in Brasil. But I do understand that ultimately it's depending on how open your boss is to doing UX. Good luck, I hope things work out for you!

      João G. Hi! Brasil is a great place in south america when talking about UX. It is difficult everywhere and we need to teach our customers a little bit but in Brasil there are a lot problems = a lot of opportunities to grow as at UX designer! In fact Brasil has really cool events and the Service Design field, which is a new field related to UX is growing there before than any other south american country. Dont be sad, you are in a great country. Greetings from Argentina 😀 🇦🇷

    Hi Sarah, thank you for your video and taking the time to answer all the questions here. I'm thinking of changing careers and becoming a UX designer. However, I already have a finance degree and I don't want to add any additional debt from school loans. Do you think it''s possible for me to break into the field by educating myself and building a portfolio? I'm 40 years old and I have work experience primarily in real estate. I'm wondering if I'll be able to compete against others with a related degree.

    If you train yourself to spot problems, will it drive you nuts seeing them everywhere? I'm already like this; that's why I'm watching this video -- but I worry that making a career of it could make life kind of annoying, even more so...

    • @SarahDoody
      @SarahDoody  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey @Antares Diekow -- short answer, YES it will drive you crazy :) But, think of all the impact you can have fixing a lot of these horrible experiences. For example, I've been spending a lot of time on a few government sites and the UX is horrifyingly horrible :) As in I literally cannot upload files to their system because I'm on a Mac -- so I had to print out over 100 pages and walk them over to a government office in town. So frustrating. But, this is why I do what I do. I truly want to help more people think like a designer so that we have LESS experiences such as this :)
