PHILIPPI - Ultimate General Civil War - Union Legendary Campaign - 1

The Battle of Philippi formed part of the Western Virginia Campaign of the American Civil War, and was fought in and around Philippi, Virginia (now West Virginia) on June 3, 1861. A Union victory, it was the first organized land action of the war, though generally viewed as a skirmish rather than a battle.

Love how he actually talks about the history
Hey..I live in Philippi. I mean the original one, in eastern Macedonia, in northern Greece.
No wonder why it sound familiar to me
Eastern Macedonia is what my friends from Skopje call Bulgaria.
There was an even greater battle fought there a very long time ago...
I find it kinda hilarious that the tutorial battle for the Union is actually pretty difficult, but the tutorial for the CSA is ridiculously easy(the AI didn’t even guard the fort with their infantry so I just walked in like it was nothing, and defending the fort is a piece of cake)
The first CSA battle is much, much harder on legendary! They have way more troops
I was surprised as well that I lost a tutorial LOL
Well, the war was easy for the CSA in the beginning, talking about baiting...
Don't know if I have ever seen anyone call the Potomac Fort battle as easy. I find it to be extremely hard on Legendary, even pretty tough on MG.
@@strategygamemike its definitely far easier than the first Union battle, as long as you use the cav to murder the Union skirmishers and get your infantry to the fort before the Union reinforcements arrive its a piece of cake(especially when the AI brainfarts and leaves the one infantry brigade stood outside of the fort rather than holding the forts defenses)
You need to keep in mind the 1855 Sharps, with which your many free skirmishers are equipped, have superior accuracy and fire rate compared to the main infantry weapon, the 1842 Springfield. Also, you can sell any carbines you recover for a decent amount early game, so there's no reason to not have them take the brunt of the fighting.
The only other advice I can offer is to buy every Lorenz musket possible at the start as Union. It's the best all-around weapon early game, but then I haven't played the game on Legendary either, so no idea if that would have ill-effects.
@Shepard Agreed, a bigger infantry brigade (1800 men) gets you a free decent sized skirmisher brigade as well. The skirmishers can be used as delaying troops to buy your infantry more time to move, scouting hills and forests, or to extend the line where there are gaps.
I try to have 1 artillery brigade per division. Better to have some artillery in each engagement, I think.
Besides the Lorenz musket, I find that the Enfield musket is outstanding for the early/mid campaign.
On legendary it's not that easy. Most the time there won't be enough Lorenz available for more than a single unit, and if you lose enough men in said unit, there won't be replacement Lorenz rifles so it's pretty difficult.
I have always had this game on my wishlist, and this is the first time I’m actually taking a look at it. It excites me because I love strategy like games
You'll love this. It's great and very replayable
This was the most exciting walkthrough I've seen in a while!
I guess I'll be buying this game. I love single player type games like this. The last real fun down view game like this I played was called Close Combat. It was a single player game like this with campaigns and controls similar to this
Close Combat just came out with a new one too! I played a few episodes on here. Good stuff.
Wait a guy who plays history games while teaching me history stuff... kinda like how Scott Manley plays rocket science games while teaching me rocket science stuff? *Subscribe*
a trick : you can watch movies on Flixzone. I've been using them for watching loads of movies recently.
@Thiago Abram Definitely, have been using flixzone} for months myself =)
@Thiago Abram yup, been watching on Flixzone} for months myself :D
@Thiago Abram Definitely, I've been watching on flixzone} for months myself :)
Is this a bot farm ?
Finally, I can watch a competent player playing this game
Glad to see you doing another series. Just got back to the game myself. I suggest AO, Medicine and Politicts should be the main focus. Also, the first perk should be experience in your general. Ammo wont be a problem för awhile. Union imo need the extra exp. Anyways. Good luck.
great choice to pull out of the town.... advice for the suply depo ... use 4 skimishers to hold the confederates that come in the right of the map over the bridge you can hodl the entire army there and destroy them with 4 skirmishers... also make sure to send the cav north in the Forrest to prevent other reinforcements from crossing the river the cav and one skirmisher can handle that.... the ai doenst like quantity of units not sizes... also for infantry having one unit of LZ is great... helps out with the added range! also dont use the defences in the fort instead park people behind the northern fort and make him route each time he tries to take it! if you let him rush you you can route his units one at a tiem as they come up and eventually your able to bring back your skirmishers and harass his flanks ... if your troops have longer guns than him with range it really helps inflict the casualties before he charges ... and hsi morale then dies quick resulting in a big route... when your canon show up they are nice to help out with routing him too they dont do alot of damage but they do moral hits like crazy! legendary i am finding out is so much better with upgraded troops!
The first time I took the town I held it and barely held on till reinforcements arrived. I think pulling out from town and retaking is probably the better strategy. I just hate paying for the same real estate twice.
i only recently learned of this battle (and i am pretty well read on the civil war) from fallout 76
Hey man love your videos, and UGCW series, keep it up,greetings from Serbia !
Thank you so much! Glad to have a new friend in Serbia!
I've hear other gamers say that this battle is easy if you use your cannon on the right flank (if you put them on that northern right island/pin you can enfilade fire on them at will and the train cant hit them.)
Great game:) I have not done anything near Legendary mode and have not played for quite awhile now. I need to from the beginning a bit as a refresher now.
Key to winning is 1. Flank and 2. Always engage from a position of cover.
You left too many troops on the west side of the river. Those troops would have helped blunt his big push as they could have pressured his flanks.
My 3rd great grandfather was part of the 191st Ohio Regiment company H.His brother died in the battle of the wilderness. 🇺🇸
Its a good call.Displacing your troops and artilliry right outside of town was wise.Kinda reminds me of defending Carentan,in Company of Heroes.Instead of defending the town itself. You set up the defense in the other side of town.
Enjoy watching your play - thanks for sharing. Never did well in this game even on lower levels .
Give yourself time. I was pretty terrible when I first started playing
I like how your biggest unit is the only one that retreated....and he retreated ALL THE WAY. LOL
I came here from your other channel, wasn't aware this game existed. I was going to give you crap for redoing campaigns, after watching your playthrough with Union and CSA, but this game is way harder than I expected. I've cleared the game with both sides on both Colonel and Brigadier General but I can't beat the first Major General level as either the Union or CSA lol.
And as I say that, I then copy what you did here and easily won the battle. Sigh.
Odds are even on Legendary, this campaign will be over about four or five missions from Richmond, when the Confederate replacements dry up and the Union can just walk through to their objectives.
Yeah, I fully expect this legendary campaign to be significantly easier than the Confederate one toward the end
To the very start: It makes by far most sense to take the woods on the hill anyways, to get into a good position for the assault on the city.Getting stabbed in the back by those rather obvious skirmishers was not necessary.
Concerning Scaling: HG, I really love your series, but please realize for once to this never-ending topic that the game always only scales DOWN from the AI`s force pool. For the large battles, the AI may add auxiliary troops, though.
Depending on difficulty, these may be e.g. about 25k for the Union at Antietam. ( For example: 75k in the force pool means it can max out at a potential total of 100k)
Yet, you may complain about how the force pool works, and the AI reinforcements on Legendary, which are however also part of the difficulty setting:
Highly annoying is winning with the South in big style at said Antietam, loosing well over 20k good and precious Southern gentlemen ( mostly armed with the highly advanced smoothbore technology, rather obviously ;) ) in the process of completely annihilating the Union`s force, as in Lee`s dream.
Only to see the AI not signing an unconditional peace agreement, but completely fill up to its (rather huge) pool minimum afterwards again:
It does not really matter in our case whether you bring down its force to, say, 20k or to 50k in the battle, and good play of exchanging three or more for one while in the defensive gets severely punished at this moment: It is actially here where kind of a bad design shines through.
Your really good controlling your army. I like your tactics as well.
Man this first mission on legendary is actually pretty hard. I also end the battle basically limping across the finish line.
Wow what a crazy way to win. I would have stayed in the city just have backup to your line units like the cavalry. When one of his units charges counter charge with the cavalry behind that unit. Keep the artillery close to the line as well. When the land shark shows up blast it. I did that and it was gone before it even stopped.
Couple pointers. When your guys are on the line put them on run; they move faster when switching targets. Also keep your general close so they can receive the moral boost. I'm not totally sure but if you merge units now they have terrible efficiency but it doesn't show up in the stats.
I just finished a 2nd Union MG campaign and I had 200k less casualties than my first MG campaign.
I definitely noticed the units break far too easily when merged. Won't do that again unless I absolutely must.
I'm not sure if you are getting recon or not but I think its a must because you want to know when scaling happens.
If you have the time watch Something Compass play through of legendary th-cam.com/video/uMxX-t9GMsk/w-d-xo.html
He has good insights to the game.
Yeah, I will definitely be getting it sooner rather than later. Probably get it up to 4 by the time I finish Shiloh. I'll want it for the battles after that.
Marching through Georgia: Bring the good old bugle, boys, we'll sing another song;
Sing it with a spirit that will start the world along,
Sing it as we used to sing it, fifty thousand strong,
While we were marching through Georgia.
Hurrah! Hurrah! We bring the jubilee!
Hurrah! Hurrah! The flag that makes you free!
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea,
While we were marching through Georgia.

i couldnt watch past taken that beating from Hexamer at the start...you turned around okay...but then you stayed in the open! this game is all about cover...move them around into the tree's (still facing Hexamer) and being all around so that Hexamer is the one in the open field and your in 100% cover
Chris, that logo is great.
that was my original logo made back in 2016 when I first started this channel and it was called The History Guy
The two things I like in life are in this channel. History and gaming. Subscribe!
Just got this , Steam sale... Good bargain at $10
"I had three uncles..."
Holy sh*t man, how old are you?
Freaken Shiloh and Fredericksburg where a tough fight as the Feds.
Ah, one day I'll be pleased with a game like this showing the three Wars for Independence and Unification of Italy. 🥺😌
The ai isn't quite as agressive as you think when it comes to defending the city. You can easily secure the left flank with one brigade and some skirmishes then put others in the middle and right side with guns at the bottom south of the city. It is a better move since the ai would be adamantly charging against the middle and get gunned out on the open field. Again you can just trynna last stand with great result while waiting for reinforcements. I had my kd wise 1-6 with this 1st battle. Also shot the trained into pieces
When I first played this game, I just used soviet mass assault tactics and Japanese banzai charges tactics, it was not a great idea, especially on the bridge
The thing about both successful mass assault tactics and banzai charges is that the timing has to be perfect. You can win many battles in this game by charging.
But you got to have the right perks (the melee and morale perks), the right amount of men, and have them in the correct positions and terrain. Most importantly, the charge has to happen at the correct moment and it has to be synchronized or it will fail.
Any restrictions on avenues of attack (crossing a single bridge across a river, etc, etc) will always benefit the defender.
The broader the front, the better charges work. The deeper the fronts are, the more they fail.
Just my 2 cents on my experience with Confederate charging in this game.
H.G. I hate this battle too. It`s the battle you just want to put behind you. At least you won.
When my parents split my mom lived in Volga about 10-15 minutes from Philippi.
I just beat this on major general and it was a near run thing.. at the end I was sending brigades across the bridge to be slaughtered just to keep my other troops from being annihilated.
I don't play video games, last time I did it was with a PS1. And seriously just a few weeks ago, I was watching Lets Game it Out just because those guys are funny as shit regardless of I not knowing what they're talking about at times. But it gave me an idea for a type of game that I've never known to exist. I love reading about the Civil War to a point its probably a little unhealthy obsession. And my idea was to have a game to where you control the entire battlefield. Not like call of duty where you just play as 1 person, but you're General Grant, or whoever, and you dispatch entire army's and watch it unfold. And if it were a Civil War based game then I would consider shopping around for a console to make it happen. And holy shit this game looks like everything I had thought of. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
love the graphics of this game...but wish the scope would be a bit more in-depth
I love watching you and wish I could play it but I have a Mac products. So I can’t.
This reminds me of Sid Meier's Civil War from like 2002 or something. Like just a rehash of that game.
Edit: Wow. 1997 actually. I'm freaking old.
yea, i just learned that 2009 was literally a decade ago.
Zaphod I played that game to death. This is similar to that.
@@klemengrdina4996 shit yeah, me too. I think in my high school history class in 2001, we went over the American Civil War. I've been a war history junkie ever since. And then soon discovered the Sid Meier's game. I played that game like 24/7 and even got the add-ons/DLC. I think they were Antietam and South Mountain. Don't know if they were official release though lol as I remember them being buggy as all hell.
I wonder if this game would run on my laptop.
Hope the no infantry challenge helps you fight this mode!
I think it definitely will help.
and please use your leader
I came here for the logistics.
Good battle! I'm about to delve into the Total War Series. I'm on Disability so even tho Steam has their Summer Sale going on right now, I'm trying to find he game(s) I'll enjoy the most for the least amount of money. If I can pick your brain for a moment here...which of the Total War games did you enjoy the most? Do you have any other War games that you find playing a lot? Hey, thanks for your time!
Honestly it depends on what part of history you like the most. Personally I like Napoleon the most but Shogun 2 has a lot of cool features.
Show us the army organization, yes! but if your going to use a holding action at a certain point in the battle, you can skip through that.
yeah, I'll probably skip through the quiet parts of battles where I can during this series.
On your suggestion I picked this up about 2 weeks ago and its been great. Filling the hole of a game to play that fits my time and interest.
I am on the baby level. Made it tp Shiolo then reading forums thought I might run out of guys and started over. Finished Philipi then got to myain screen and I was given 2 infantry and 2 arty. Not sure why it gave me thoughts when my first run it gave me 3 inf and 1 arty?
That dam Merramake was whiping me out so I retreated into the town and did well.
O and Zook is not the brightest buld in the bunch! He Zook go that way...na I will go over there and die! :)
Its been great thought
Thanks
Enjoy! Give it time and practice. You'll be a pro in no time.
I have Ultimate General: Gettysburg and hated it. Not much of a historian, just wanted an RTS. But I did visit the real Gettysburg while on a vacation. Went to some Battlefields and tourist shops. Bought a little Union hat and sword(I was 12).
UGCW is much better than UG Gettysburg.
@@TheHistoryGuy Hopefully UG American Revolution will be even better (it certainly sounds so).
Please don't do any cuts on the the battle. I'd like to see everything even something that seems as boring as marching the troops. Maybe just put the speed up for the "boring" parts? Thanks!
That was an interesting strategy that I had never thought of, pulling out of the town completely and retaking it. Nice!
Says skirts shouldn’t be that powerful but then I go and read about the first and second U.S. Sharpshooters
Thanks for this video! What mods are you playing with?
I think you underestimate the power of your general in this battle
ok instead of crossing all the bulk of the army why not just the skermisher? now u just kill most of the army (1/3)
not sure how moving out of a great defensive position in order to have to attack across bridges and into a city helps you preserve your men? I would suggest watching something compass videos or fiasco gaming.
I suggest you change your tone.
I apologize if my comment implied a "tone." I'm a long-time subscriber to HG and appreciate what he does. My suggestion was just for HG to look at a couple YT channels that are kind of doing the same thing. They actually have stats and knowledge of the game that aren't commonly known and are good to know. No big deal. As far as not understanding the particular strategy used in this video I can only say I'm sorry if that sounded harsh. Was just curious.
@@johnpayne498 Fair enough.
No worries. I tried it the other way, and while successful, I took many more casualties as he charged into me with everything he had. Its nearly impossible to hold the town long enough for the reinforcements to make it across the river on legendary mode.
john payne honestly falling back till you get reinforcements is a way better idea. Reason why is even though the defensive positions are good you get attacked on all sides constantly and especially on legendary you’re most likely are gonna get pushed off and even if you don’t your casualties will be through the roof. Plus if you fall back across the river they’ll try to attack you (they did for me anyways) and they can only cross two Bridges and with that you can slaughter them while you take minimal casualties compared to them and you don’t have to run your reinforcements to the front so they’ll be slightly more fresh. Also you’ll wear them down as they constantly try to cross so when you do cross back they’ll have such low moral and condition pushing them back and holding till the end is decently easier per say.
Dude how loud is your mouse?! Is it one of those metal ball ones you got with your windows 95 PC?
Hey I'm from there.
the ai set a good trap at the start
I have been missing out apparently of some great games.
Should I get thisnor wait for ultamit Admerial?
Definitely get both.
@@TheHistoryGuy ok cool. See you on the battlefield!
@@TheHistoryGuy have you played World at War Admitals Edition?
History guy gotta ask how did your arty have segmented range indicators is it a mod or something only available on higher difficulty I need this in my life!!!
Yes it's the J&P Rebalance Mod.
@@TheHistoryGuy awesome thanks
Where is the best place to get updates/patches for this game?
Steam
Strategy question for the pros out there. When and why do you decide to merge units?
Merging units is almost never a good idea. The only time I think it's necessary is if your units are so small that they're either going to be completely ineffective or wiped out. Their effectiveness seems to be greatly diminished when merged.
at 5:43 when you click and hold to turn your men around your arrow snaps so much faster than mine.. I don't get it... Mine freezes for a moment and then shifts
You wouldn't happen to have more family in the American Army would you? I've met a couple STILLWAGNER's
Could be related for sure. Most of the family stayed Stillwagon but my branch ended up Stillwagoner for some reason.
Outnumbered 3 to Juan
If you killed the train you would have got more resources
Do you plan on doing a Rebalance mod campaign?
I'm using it now on my CSA no infantry campaign but yeah I'll probably do another legendary one with the mod.
does friendly fire work from your cannon ?
Not on this game.
Whats goin' on with ep 2??
It went live just as I realized there was no in game sound recorded. I just replayed it and it's rendering now. Should be live late tonight or in the morning.
how do you make the fire lines for a unit so bright ?
That's the J&P Rebalance Mod
@@TheHistoryGuy thanks a lot Iam enjoying the campaign you do
Why is video 2 in the playlist set to private?
I just corrected that. I had a video of Bull Run that was uploaded but glitched so I set it to private but never removed it.
Quite gamey but that is because the AI has faults that can be exploited unfortunately and tries to make up for it with numbers.
No Fog of War?
Yes there is.
Shit I can’t beat this one on easy
'Scaling' is ridiculous. If the Civil War had been scaled, the Rebels would never have lost.
I don’t like the scales . 2 soldiers’s size is equal to a building?! Really?
