I live in New Mexico. The Sun symbol on the flag is called Zia. It is also the the name of a Native American pueblo/village. It represents the four cardinal directions, the four seasons of the year, the four period of each day (morning, noon, evening, and night), and the four seasons of life (childhood, youth, middle age, and old age). The center of the sun symbol stands for the circle of life itself. Also, the yellow and red are the national colors of Spain, the first Europeans to colonize NM and the SW in general.

The guy in the Michigan flag is actually a French Muskateer not a Sasquatch and he is specifacally a nod to when Michigan was descovered and setteled by the French during the 1600s, the hat that the Frenchman is wearing too is specifally made of Beaver hide and tail. At the time when the French found Michigan they also found Michigan Beavers, which was almost like the French/Native's version of currency in Michigan and it was extremely profitable.

Shame he didn't explain the Maryland flag. It's got a very British history. It is the quartered heraldic arms of the Calvert and Crossland families, the parents of George Calvert (his mother being a Crossland), 1st Baron Baltimore (created such by King James I in 1625). The royal charter for the colony of Maryland was granted to his son Cecil Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, in 1632 by King Charles I.

Just to add for context: Texas' flag design does have some meaning behind it. The white is for peace, red is for war, blue is for friendship and of course the one star is for the Lone Star State, but at the time it was it's own country (The Republic of Texas), so that was the meaning after it became a state. Being from Texas, I think it's the best!😁

The state flag of Alaska displays eight gold stars, forming the Big Dipper and Polaris, on a dark blue field. The Big Dipper is an asterism in the constellation Ursa Major which symbolizes a bear, an animal indigenous to Alaska. As depicted on the flag, its stars can be used as a guide by the novice to locate Polaris and determine true north, which varies considerably from magnetic north.
The design was created by Benny Benson of Seward and selected from among roughly 700 entries in a 1927 contest. In 2001, a survey conducted by the North American Vexillological Association placed Alaska's flag fifth best in design quality out of the 72 Canadian provincial, U.S. state, and U.S. territory flags ranked. It finished behind the flags of New Mexico, Texas, Quebec, and Maryland respectively.
The Alaska flag is actually useful.

The problem with using a state seal is they have a lot of detail that you can't even see when the flag is flying up in the air. When you put all the blue flags w a state seal next to each other, you can't really tell which goes with which state. Even most of the people that live in that state couldn't tell. A flag should be easily distinguishable from a distance w a design or symbol that clearly identifies what state it represents and even better if it has a story behind it. That's why simplicity works best.
A really good flag is one that people are proud to put on their shirts, stickers, phone cases, etc. The DC, California, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, South Carolina, and Colorado flags are frequently seen on people's clothing and belongings. The Hawaii one is really sad to me because Hawaii has such a rich Hawaiian culture that the flag does nothing to address. Instead, it references a foreign country. Hawaii could have one of the coolest flags.

Actually in Arizona history in 8th grade we were taught the Arizona flag was designed in 1917 (3 years before statehood). Kyle got the suns rays correct and going a little deeper, the red and yellow color of the rays depict the colors of the Spanish flag for Coronado (a Spanish Conquistador and first European to explore the Southwest in the 1600s) and the 13 rays of course are for the original 13 colonies of the US.
The blue bottom was the same color of the US flag and also the uniform color of the US Calvalry.
The copper star depicted as the number one resource and the largest copper producer in the US (which still is today).
Fun fact about New Mexico is that it was named some 360 years BEFORE the country of Mexico was named!

Maryland's very busy state flag is a combination of the coat of arms of Lord Baltimore's father's and mother's families. Here in Minnesota we are currently redesigning our state seal (we're a 'blue flag with symbol in the middle' state). It currently shows an Indian riding into the sunset while a farmer watches with a rifle at the ready. (p.s. @@ahoyforsenchou7288 Me too. There’s a few videos I’d love them to react to. So many of their videos focus on America, but only surface level. I’ve traveled Europe extensively and Europeans love to comment on America while failing to go beyond the superficial. Like that one video with the German woman who lives in Cincinnati they reacted to. Cincinnati is in America, but does not represent all of America. I know European history because that’s my family history, but these Euros appear to not know or not understand American history. Typically what they do know is a very biased perspective catering to one political extreme.

@@AZ-697 Completely true, I can't entirely blame them. The only information they can get about America is the "approved" information from mainstream media and TH-cam. Dissenting or opposing viewpoints are becoming increasingly difficult to find on "normie" internet avenues. One of the reasons I enjoy this channel is that they are the first to admit that they are in the early learning stages of US history and culture, and don't try to really force any tired talking points or opinions down my throat.
On the note of travel, that is good to hear. Two of my grandparents came here from Hungary shortly after the Revolution, and taking a trip to Budapest and the rest of the country remains very high on my bucket list. I can, however, imagine receiving the same questions about "guns and racism and Trump" everywhere I go.

You might want to brush up on constellations as the Big Dipper is a big constellation. The North Star is the one sailors use if they are lost or everything goes bad and they must navigate via stars. It’s the most important star we know as it is automatically in the north position and it is the guide for everyone. Every sailor has used the stars to navigate before at some point and knowing each constellation’s position in the sky can instantly tell you where to go and if something is coming. Europeans rely too heavily on tech to sail but everyone else knows already without ever touching a compass simply by looking into the sky and understanding positioning of stars and alignments of stellar bodies.

The NC flag's dates are the dates of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence (May 20, 1775) and of the Halifax Resolves (April 12, 1776), documents that place North Carolina at the forefront of the American independence movement. Funnily enough, Thomas Jefferson plagarized the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence to write the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

I am a bit surprised that neither of you seem to have heard of "The Big Dipper".
The Big Dipper is an asterism (group of stars) known as "The Big Dipper" because many indigenous tribes believed it looked like a dipper (ladle with a long handle) or a "drinking gourd". It's part of the constellation Ursa Major (The Big Bear). The two outer stars which help form the bowl of the dipper point to "the North Star" (officially named Polaris) and Alaska is the northern most state in the union, so this is actually very fitting for the Alaskan state flag.
Prior to emancipation, runaway slaves in the south were able to find their way to free northern states by following the North Star. 😃

The Arizona flag was designed by a National Guardsmen who was bothered by the fact that at interstate training events, AZ had no flag. The info on the flag is correct, but to add, the bronze star represents the state's copper mining industry. Recommend you listen to the folk song "The Arizona Sword" to get a better idea of the state's spirit.

The Mississippi flag was a conglomeration of the official Confederate States flag and the Confederate Army's battle flag. Yes, they were clinging to the lost war/confederacy. In 2021 they changed it to this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_Mississippi Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina have flags that have design elements similar to the Confederate States or Confederate Battle Flag. The Texas state flag looks similar to the Confederate States flag but predates it by almost 30 years. I think the Union Jack is on the Hawaii flag due to English Captain Cook's "discovery" of the islands. It is quite eye-catching and colorful. My favorites are Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California (I like the flag, not so enamored with the state), Colorado, Maryland, South Carolina, Hawaii, Ohio, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

Maryland's flag is the legit heraldic banner of the founder of the state, Lord Baltimore. The gold and black quarters represent the Calvert family and the white and red crosses represent the Crossland family -- both of which made up Lord Baltimore's family. So, this is a genuine heraldic banner dating from the 16th century and honors the state's roots as an English colony. In addition, during the Civil War, Maryland was divided between Union sympathizers, who chose the Calvert device for their symbol, and the Southern sympathizers, who took the Crossland quarter as their symbol. Reuniting these on the state flag symbolizes the restoration of unity in the state after the Civil War. So, this flag actually means something. It was not focus-grouped or selected by marketing or color-wheel specialists. It is unique and represents a unique place. We don't care if it strikes some people as ugly. It's real.
