Texan here, our capitol isn't dusty like he thinks but actually a shade of pink. That comes from a type of granite called Red Sunset that is native to Texas and was quarried from Granite Mountain just outside of Marble Falls, a small town in the Austin area. That same hue is on a lot of the government buildings in Austin.

The Virginia capitol building was designed by Thomas Jefferson and based off a Roman temple. The center in the original part and the wings were added later. Its the second oldest behind Maryland and also served as the Capitol of the Confederacy. The building behind in Old City Hall and people on my tours actually thought harry potter was filmed there....Funny thing is Daniel Radcliff actually filmed part of Imperium there while I was giving tours. On the second highest hill in Richmond. Had planned to build on the highest hill so his friend ended up buying up all the land thinking it would take off in price...bad mistake.

Fun facts about the Texas capitol, the building is larger than the US Capitol Building. The construction was paid for in a barter instead of cash. The builders built the capitol in exchange for land in the Pan Handle area. And lastly, the exterior of the building is lined completely in Texas red granite which is what gives it it’s color.

Capital vs Capitol = two different things
"Capital" with an "A" is used to describe either money/assets, to describe the first letter used in the beginning of a sentence, to describe a crime punishable by death or to describe a city that is the seat of government.
"Capitol" with an "O" is used to describe the building or group of buildings where legislative bodies meet.

Kyle has a very narrow, parochial idea of what a state capitol "ought" to look like. Basically, he seems to think that if it doesn't look like the U.S. Capitol, it doesn't look like a capitol at all. Virginia's capitol was already completed and in use before the U.S. Capitol's cornerstone was even laid.

Included among the honorees was Lawrence Welk, a fact I found nostalgically charming.)

Some interesting facts about Illinois and Iowa's state capitols.
Both were designed by the same architect, John C. Cochrane. He designed the Illinois state house in 1868 and the Iowa statehouse in 1871. Iowa's captiol went through four architects supervising the work over the course of the 15 years it took to complete it (2 resigned or quiet and 1 died during construction). Only the last supervising architect stayed on the job until completion.
I personally love the style and design of the Ilinois statehouse, mixing Second Empire, Rennaissance Revival, and Classical elements into one giant structure.

I was just in our state capital (Frankfort) today. I'll be there again most of the day tomorrow. I won't be near the capitol though. Our two largest cities, Louisville, where I'm from, and Lexington, both wanted to be the capital so they settled on a city more or less half way between the two which is why it's in Frankfort.

I live in North Dakota and I agree with you. We do need a new capitol building but the one thing that North Dakota and North Dakotans are known for is simplicity. We see no need to spend the money for a large ornate building when a cheaper one works just fine.

Capitol is the Building, and it is where legislature meets, similar to your Parliament Building. The Capitol is in the Capital, which is the city itself.

These buildings are mostly committee meeting rooms, a few offices, and the big floor where everyone argues out laws. There’s also a courtroom somewhere in there where state level judges talk out cases and they give out verdicts. The state senate is in a different building and so is the state’s congress. Usually more offices are around different buildings near the capitol building. The state courthouse which is usually the federal courthouse building is somewhere near the governor’s office for easy access though in New York it’s a panel of judges saying yes or no on aspects of case in New York City. Both sides must argue their opinions with supporting evidence and the judges decide if the case should proceed.

That’s not true. The Capitol is for the state legislature (both Senate and House) to do its business. States do not have a Congress. Many state Capitol buildings also house the Office of the Governor. Most state Capitols do not house the state’s judicial department, however. That department and the entire court structure is in a separate building that typically also houses the state Supreme Court and the Appeals court as well as state judicial department functions, like indigent defense, victims services, etc. state courthouses are administered by the states, not the federal government. I’ve never seen a state courthouse in a federal building, anywhere.

"Capitol" and "capital" are two completely different whose main connections to one another is that they are homophones and that you might find a capitol in a capital.
The US took a very blatant influence from classical Greece and Rome in the neoclassical style that dominates a lot of the most important American public architecture. Styling legislative buildings in the young republic as temples of the people, the American founding fathers chose to name the federal and state legislative buildings after the Capitol-the Temple of Jupiter that once stood on Rome's Capitoline Hill.

Often if you see a dusty green dome on one of these buildings, the dome is made of copper. Our city courthouse has such a dome and periodically they have to clean it a put a protective finish over it or it turns from a nice bright copper color to a dusty green, due to the oxidation of the copper. Some like the look of the green and leave it as such.

Yes, the Statue of Liberty was originally copper before it corroded with the classic green patina (verdigris) finish.

The Louisiana Capitol was built by Governor Huey Long between 1930-32, that is the same time period the Empire State Building was built and they are both done in the Art Deco style that was popular at the time so that is why that have a similar look. There are still bullet holes in the walls from when Huey Long was assassinated in the building in 1935 just a couple years after it was completed. Also in the Senate chamber there is a pencil in the ceiling that was lodged there in 1970 when a bomb was detonated. It went off on a weekend so nobody was killed but they left the pencil in the ceiling as a reminder.

Indiana's Capitol Bldg's Dome is Copper. The green color is the Copper Tarnish. I assume several of the green ones are the same. West Virginia and Georgia the Dome is Gold (not gold colored). The Kentucky and Indiana Capitol Bldgs are made from Indiana Limestone which is closely similar to Florencian Marble and naturally colored.

We use capital too, but that refers to monetary things, as far as I can recall. It’s like the German, das Kapital. Same thing. A capitol refers to a building, but I believe the video is correct that a capital can also have a political reference.
